I hope no one was hypnotised by my "soothing voice" at the beginning of the video!

Great video. It's important to note that, in light of then current medical practices (which included Bloodletting, sometimes even with leeches - which more often than not would lead patients to their demise), it's kind of complicated to brand Mesmer as a charlatan given the context of his times. As the commision officially registered, the patients did improve somehow, whether it was by Magnetism or the power of suggestion. There is a hypothesis by which Magnetism is but an ancient non-verbal form of semiotic communication, directly influencing the subject / receiver's subconscious to kickstart his/her own healing mechanisms. Hence Magnetism being the father of Hypnosis and one of the grandfathers of Psychology.

IMO this is a very important point which seems to routinely go unnoticed in the various send-ups of Mesmer. As this video points out, Mesmer himself was a member of the contemporary medical establishment

Thank you for doing these videos. If you ever find yourself in Arkansas and need someone to drink and talk history with, I'm your friend.

Would you mind elaborating on the "English follower of Issac Newton" what is his name? Thanks.

The use of "negative magnetism" was well depicted by the actor William Macy in the movie the cooler if I recall correctly.
