सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता (Indus Valley Civilization) के पश्चात भारत में जिस नवीन सभ्यता का विकास हुआ उसे ही आर्य(Aryan) अथवा वैदिक सभ्यता(Vedic Civilization) के नाम से जाना जाता है। इस काल की जानकारी हमे मुख्यत: वेदों से प्राप्त होती है, जिसमे ऋग्वेद सर्वप्राचीन होने के कारण सर्वाधिक महत्वपूर्ण है। वैदिक काल को ऋग्वैदिक या पूर्व वैदिक काल (1500 -1000 ई.पु.) तथा उत्तर वैदिक काल (1000 - 600 ई.पु.) में बांटा गया है।

In the early Vedic period society was not divided on the basis of caste instead profession were mentioned which included priestly class warrior , trader, merchant, peasant class in rig Veda there is is one quote which says" I am poet my father is a physician and mother is corn grinder" . The quiet indicates that in rig Vedic society was not divided on the basis of caste system
Kula(family) what is the most important unit in the rig Vedic period early Vedic period the head of family who was eldest male member of the family it also indicates that the society of early Vedic period was patriarchal in nature
In the early Vedic period women were accorded with high respect in the society
1) political rights - women were member sabha and vidhata .
2) educational right - in the early Vedic period women were allowed to participate in all educational discourse lopamudra was a highly respected intellectual who was a highly respected intellectual who was wife of Agastya rishi
3) Marriage right - we have not came across any example of child marriage in rigvedic society , people were allowed to choose their spouses under Gandharva Vivah vyavastha . In the early Vedic period widow remarriage was also allowed under niyog Vivah
