If you young people, (students) want to learn something today that will change your future and present do this. 1. walk to school and back to your dorm/home. 2. don't eat for two days and go to bed hungry and sit in the cafeteria (at your lunch break) while others eat. 3. Take a long trip around your city on public transportation (city bus). You will quickly grow up and see the world in a different light. I promise you that you will remember this experience the rest of your life.

Finally the person being asked the questions is thoughtful and experienced enough to give insightful answers and it helps put his other classes into greater perspective. A classic hippy trying to help the young generation live their best life and navigate our world with respect and understanding.

This professor appears to be one of the success stories of the self discovery /spiritual movement of the sixties /early seventies. He balances the spirituality with critical thinking. Thankfully there are still professors like this teaching the next generations & not these ideological priests of the identity consciousness /neo marxist movement.

My half century of life advice - Dive deep into everything that you do, just choose it first. Work too hard, risk too much, seek the big challenges & embrace the pain. With all do respect, the 180 degree opposite of thus professor, don't water down your understanding of values. Some things are more good, other things much worse. There are stakes. Embrace them. Embrace when you win, embrace when you lose. Just don't fail by never jumping in to life itself.

4:26 Dark Clouds do indeed have Silver Linings. In High School I wanted to go to the Royal Military College Duntroon (Canberra, Australia) and become an Army Officer, but My career counsellors talked Me out of it, because I was a Person with Disabilities and therefore (in their opinion) completely unsuitable for Military Service. Then I wanted to go to Teachers College, but upon Graduation My grades were not sufficient for Me to secure a place. Then two years after Graduation, I began Teachers College because My Age qualified Me for a Special Entry Program. And 13 years after Graduating High School, whilst working as an Officer of the Crown within the ultra secretive Australian Department of Defence, (where I was a specialist in Military Planning) the Australian Army expressed a desire to offer Me a 10 year work contract (despite My Disabilities) and put Me into the Uniform of a Colonel in the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police.

People who’ve had near death experiences have one of three situations: 1. they don’t remember anything; 2. They remember floating out of their body and going to pure light/warmth/love; 3. They experience total void and darkness and they recall the feeling of utter hopelessness. Perhaps he should study more on the Causeless Cause and Thomas Aquinas. Awesome, man. You are so right, bad things, good things, Yin and Yang. I'm nearly 70 and I had two heart attacks in my early 40s, that meant the end of my working life, That's the bad thing, the good thing was and is that I get to spend the whole day, every day with my wife. My mother died but that meant I got to know my father who had been there since conception but I never knew him until my mum died. Those are just a few of my experiences. I started life with not much except for the love of those around me. I never went to college or university, other than the university of life. I made decisions that that improved my life by accepting changes that presented themselves to me, changes that I could have ignored. I'm not religious but I live a lifestyle whereby I do good if I can, when I can. I will help when and if I can, that may mean getting something off a shelf for someone having difficulty in reaching it while others walk by. I can't help myself I help because it's what I do, it's who I am. I tell people that dying is the easy part of death, those grieving have the hard part. Peace.

Certainly, the guy has some interesting takes. Regarding those who've "returned" from the afterlife, how does one know if those who come back are not among the damned? For that matter, I've personally heard testimonies of those who returned who claim to have had negative and distressing near death experiences. It's only a small percentage with the negative experience. However, since we have no idea how the sample may be skewed, it doesn't seem wise to make broad brush positive statements regarding the afterlife.

I really liked his lecture about statistics of gun violence and how our perception of reality has been warped by the media. But really disagree with his comment that all the good things in our life are “given” to us. I think he was trying to subtly nudge at the concept of “grace” and how he has experienced it in his life but without giving away all the secrets. He wants his students to experience grace first-hand. But by no means is everything that is good been gifted or handed to us.

No offense to this guy, because i have definitely liked some of what he has to say in other videos, but as a Christian this is not what prayer is about. This is more like a Bhuddhist religious perspective, but for Christians prayer is about communicating with our creator. Often we adk for things, and get taught lessons, and sometimes we see God really do something miraculous, but its about relationship with God. Its also about submission of our will to His in order to be in less bondage to sin, to be more spirit filled, but again, thats through the relationship.
@sethcartner2996

I am a bit concerned about these spirit possessions. When the Holy Spirit moves He is sobering, not confusing. As to "who created God?" The unmoved mover argument is sufficient. Basically God is timeless and has always existed, no one created Him. He is outside of the laws of nature and needs not abide by them.

There are many comments on here of a similar sentiment and I truly don’t understand them: If he felt spirits take over his body and force him to sing a song he hadn’t heard before that would play in the future, why would he doubt that? I get why you and other people would, sure, but why are you so surprised that HE believes it?

Interesting class and instructor but too many tangents, extrapolations, I find it too confusing or time consuming to stay interested. Bring it to boil in micro time not stove top.

He is an insightful guy but he is also an example of why we moved on from the 1960s. There is no scientific evidence for spiritual possession. You can have such experiences through drugs or through external influences but it has nothing to do with spirts. I’m surprised that a professor does not know about pattern recognition. He was not singing that song. He was singing something and then he heard a song and that became the song. Remember kids he is not an authoritative figure on all these topics. He has credentials in a very specific field of study not the numerous topics he is addressing here. On most of these topics he has no more credibility than a fast food worker.

When we cross over that in and of it’s self an amazing experience. The next part I believe is judgement which is overlooked when taking in account of those that died and returned to life with short lived accounts. The returned didn’t face judgement and we’re simply returned. We are stuck linear logic and reasoning. Which means we only can understand a very minute and unequaled disproportionate of understanding that we couldn’t begin to comprehend. As a behavioral and biological scientist I don’t say this lightly. There’s only one way. “The Way” is Jesus. We can’t do anything to save ourselves from ourselves. Pick up the good good news and start reading the Bible that’s a love letter that is intended to develop a personal relationship with our one and only advocate and redeemer. Take a moment and reflect, then make a decision after reading and hearing the good news. There’s a reason for me to be on my knees tonight seeking forgiveness. I fall short of the glory of God and need forgiveness. The forgiveness isn’t so I can be on my merry way. I also need correction and guidance to love and serve others as Jesus did perfectly.

Is it just me or did the Advice for Grads section give a lingering taste of ablism and financially stable privilege? It's shame because I really love so much of Sam's work.

Oh that lesson that ends with everything good that happens is given to us and that good grades dont matter and working hard doesn't matter because everythibg has its goods and bads is soooo wrong. While I agree everything has its goods and bads, some things come with far more bads than goods and other things come with far more goods than bads. I liked a lot of his lectures, but boy is he waaaayyyuu off base on this.

"There is some evidence for reincarnation." We reincarnate each moment, many times a second. Tune your mind to notice it as fast. It is not bound to each person either. There is social perception and the link in Attention Schema Theory to self perception.
