I’ve using the sweet tomato heel for about 10 years. I won’t ever make any other. My first pair of socks used German short rows and I tore them apart and bought Cat’s book.

My favorite heel is the shadow wrap. Once I tried it, that was it for me. It's so clean and pretty and it's so much faster than my next favorite (the forethought or after thought heel). Denise (Earthtones Girl) has a fabulous tutorial showing how to do it, super clear and free 😊

Thank you for a wonderful overview and toutorial on the Sweet tomato heel. (thanks to you I learned a new to me 😊). What I wondered is what is your thought about the question raised in the title: "is this the ultimate heel? " (to your opinion).

Great question. Honestly I'm not sure there is one heel to rule them all, and it's really a matter of what fits an individual best, whether you enjoy working it ... in other words personal preference I'd say for me I love short row heels in general and I'm hard pressed to pick between the sweet tomato heel and the boomerang heel. But, there are a lot of arranges to TST heel. I think it's the most straightforward and a more flexible fit.

When I get holes on any kind of heels I usually sew them close in the finishing process.

When you purl back are you. purling 2 together. Are you completing the shadow wrap method?

No. All the shadow wraps get finished in step 4 when working across all the stitches.

I'm assuming DS is for double stitch. In that case I would not slip the first stitch after making the double stitch.

I just finished watching Cat’s video. I noticed she slips the first stitch on every knit and purl row . In this video you only slipped on the first purl row and the first knit row. Is there a reason for nit continuing to slip the first stitch as you progress through the heel?

I'm using a different short row technique than Cat Bohrdi is so I do not need to slip the stitch. Good catch!

@@CarrieCraftGeek I noticed tiny holes so on the second sock I did slip the first stitch and no holes. Perhaps our tensions are different.

Having a problem with holes at the junction of the heel and front of sock. Not sure what I did wrong but I can fx it after. Any thoughts?

Yeah it's always a tricky spot between the heel stitches and the instep stitches. And it's more knitting physics that it happens than knitters doing anything wrong. With short row heels of any kind I've always found gaps less of a problem than with flap and gusset. But, still happens sometimes. I personally don't worry about it because I can close the holes during finishing.

Yes. In Step 4 when I discuss "working the wraps" that's when I complete the shadow wraps.

Hi, I knit my socks toe up with GSR heel and start my heel 2 inches short of total length. Would it be the same for this heel ? And if you wanted contrast color heel, how would that work? Thanks

Great questions. The Sweet Tomato is a deeper heel than the GSR so I would start my heel earlier in the sock. If I wanted a contrasting color, I'd probably choose a different heel. One of the keys to the sweet Tomato heel is the plain row of knitting around the sock when working the short row wraps - the boomerang - and if I used a contrasting color I'd end up with a stripe around the instep.
