One major thing about this too is that it's a good alternative to healing pots during the Daylight Empress fight, since you can outright avoid damage if you time your usage right, which is amazing value for the otherwise useless healing potion during the battle

You can bring the cooldown to 15 seconds if you have a Charm of Myths as well. It’s made with the Philosopher’s Stone & the Band of Regeneration You used to be able to stack them on 1.3 console (to my knowledge), but not PC ever. They don’t stack anymore.

When I did my 1.4.4 playthrough, I've found the skeleton merchant and I was surprised when I saw the big tool tip that the Strange Brew had, and when I've tried it, I pretty much used it till Hardmode, that potion is really good even in Master Mode, because you can get a reduced time and better healing before you get the Philosopher's Stone.

The I frames make it seem like this could potentially be a very good cheese strat for certain bosses like destroyer or eater as you could pop it just before the head hits you roll the dice in invulnerability time and then use a high pierce weapon to deal an ungodly amount of damage for a brief duration before backing off and playing more normally

If you want consistent healing for 120hp, try using honeyfin. They can be caught in honey, and are the only other fish to be caught in it, other than Bumblebee Tuna, which is for quests anyways. And if you also want consistent lower potion sickness, restoration potions can do that. However they are alot harder to get. I never knew that the strange brew was now a combination of the two! i think the invincibility part wasnt talked about enough, along with luck. because if the point is "lower cooldown with good healing" then yes strange brew COULD be alright for a bit. but its really inconsistent, especially compared to a restoration potion. you COULD have a 40 (30) second cooldown with 120 hp with 4 sec invincibility, which is good but you could also have a 70 (52.5) second cooldown with 70 hp and no invincibility, which is pretty bad so i wanted to do some math to make it clearer why the invincibility and luck would matter. on average it heals 95 hp per potion at a cooldown of 55 (41.25) sec 103 hp per normal healing potion cd. you, on average, heal 3 health more. three. health. restoration potion has a 45 (33.75) second cooldown and heals 90 health, but *consistently*. now how much of a difference does this make all? well, i have the stats more organized further in this comment stats bcus im a dork (and bcus i use them later) : [note : i use HP/s to show the relation between the heals and cooldown. imagine you heal every second your potion is on cooldown and you can actually get that health in a burst] Strange brew Heals 70-120 HP [95 on average] Gives 40-70 seconds of potion sickness [~55s] (30-52.5 seconds with the Philosopher's Stone [~41.25s]) Effectively heals 1-3 HP/s [~1⅔ HP/s] (1⅓-4 HP/s with the Philosopher's Stone [~2⅓ HP/s]) Has a chance to apply 0-4 seconds of invincibility (longer = rarer) Restoration Potion Heals 90 HP Gives 45 seconds of potion sickness (33.75 seconds with the Philosopher's Stone) Effectively heals 2 HP/s (2⅔ with the Philosopher's Stone) Healing Potion (got tired) Heals 100 HP Gives 60 seconds of potion sickness (45 with pstone) Effectively heals 1⅔ HP/s (close to 2⅓ with pstone) now, comparing the stats of the strange brew to a restoration potion and a healing potion : *[NOTE : SUMMARY OF THE COMPARISON IS FURTHER DOWN IF YOU DONT WANNA READ A LOT]* The Strange Brew Heals : Between 30 less health and 20 more health then a Healing Potion, on average 5 *less* health. With a Philosopher's stone, between 1⅓ HP/s more or less, on average, again, ⅓ *less* . gives invulnurability : more then the other pots (the others dont) summary of comparison : Heals slightly less slightly faster then a healing pot, but the other way around with a restoration pot, on average. however, in terms of how much you heal how fast, it does better then healing pot but worse then restoration pot, again, on AVERAGE. but, if you get lucky it could be better then both!! idk why i typed all of this, some of my math is probably wrong too bcus its midnight and im tired. oh well not many ppl will see this anyways in the comment sea lol TL;DR its a gamble, it could heal way more or way less, and invincibility could come in clutch.

i think despite the more reliable healing and cooldown, the invincibility is what wins people over (and gambling) since it's also potentially an emergency button with invul, and more often than not invincibility is worth any health difference a morbillion times over super cool investigation though!!!!

The Strange brew is an interesting item. Personally, I prefer to use Restoration Potions which only have a 45 Second cooldown at base, and they consistently heal 90 HP, which combined with a Charm of Myths which is my most used Hardmode accessory, it's down to like 35ish seconds if I remember right, while being much more consistent (and somewhat easier to obtain) than the Strange Brew. You can either get them with 1 Glowing Mushroom, 1 regular Mushroom, Pink Gel, and a Bottle, or you can find them in Shadow Chests in Hell so I usually have a ton by the time I fight WoF or the Mechanical Bosses if I save Skeletron for hard mode.

Only issue is that aside from the small I-frames it provides, a regular greater healing potion provides more heals than the mystery brew, and since greater healing potions are even easier to get hardmode, it essentially completely beats this out.

It's really useful early game, i myself bought over 200 of these (pre boss world) because they're way easier to get than regular healing potions, and heal more hp than lesser healing potions. They also come with additional properties such as that of invincibility frames.

It would be smart to try and hit that i-frame buff prior to a fight, then swap to your regular pots during the fight. The last thing you need in the middle of something like Duke Fishron is a 2 minute pot cd (or 1:30 if you run alch stone/charm of myth). If it could be crafted into an upgraded version, I think people would pay more attention to it. (either with increased healing, stronger effects/longer list of effects, or both)

I do wish there were more unique healing items like this later in the game. Btw, if you're having problems with npcs reducing enemy spawnrate underground you should probably just place a shadow candle somewhere nearby. All you're losing is a single spawn slot if you do that.

Prior to the rework it restored 80 Health and 400 mana, giving it a unique effect combined with the Mana Flower. When the Mana Flower selects a potion to consume to resupply Mana automatically, it selects similarly to ammo (from top left to bottom right of inventory). If it sees a Strange Brew first, it would consume it because it restored Mana, and then apply both the Mana Sickness and Potion Sickness Debuffs, restoring 80 Health in the process. The Mana Flower does not observe the Mana Sickness debuff, but does observe Potion Sickness, so for this reason having a regular Mana Potion (i.e. Greater Mana Potion) _after_ the Strange Brew in inventory would allow it to be consumed until the Potion Sickness wears off. Once the cooldown is over on health potions, the Strange Brew would be able to be consumed again for another 80 Health. This allows you to automatically restore health (rather slowly) which I find neat and sad to see has been lost.

In my experience, Skeleton Merchant NEVER spawns if you are carrying enough money to buy his Yoyo glove, which is why you need to put your money on a piggy bank so that he spawns AND you can buy his stuff

You did not mention that the invulnerability effect only has a 61% chance of activating 1 of 3 different lengths of invulnerability. because of this i would not consider this as a free get out of jail card for avoiding instakills, or hard hits in general.

Money is trivial to get with an AFK mob farm. It is time consuming to build the 140x100 (small) / 200x100 farm (large) but it is SO worth it. I built one in hardcore (took 2? weekends) and it is a game changer.
