It is worth noting that if you already have a mob farm, then you can just add some infested spider walls to your farm to make the grind for the poison staff much easier.

Honestly, I just use it if I happen to come across the poison staff. The chlorophyte is super easy to obtain and this weapon does a great job against Plantera, but I'm only gonna use it if I accidentally obtain it's predecessor.

I remember using this weapon a lot in earlier versions of the game. It's got a special place in my heart, so I usually go out of my way to get it. It's great for single target and multi target, and can carry you pretty far.

I personally think the poison staff is the easiest to obtain mage weapon in all of early hardmode. Just make a box in the spider nest where there is a two block wide exit from the top, this will make it so that you can hit the spiders with them being unable to get inside. I ended up getting the staff in ten minutes thanks to a water candle and the already ridiculous spawn rate of the spiders. 100% recommend the weapon.

@Necron Brinis significantly fewer as they treat it like it's debuffs full name, acid venom meaning it's actually acidic and almost nothing is immune to an acid Edit casue I looked into it and information is always the greatest weapon in any game, the only things immune to acid venom are ghost like enemies ie poltergheist,ghosts, and wraiths, the lunatic cultist, the dutchman and saucer, and weirdly only the destroyer.

venom staff is very useful for moonlord. probably the best weapon in the game for damage over time, given how long it lasts. it is a great general secondary weapon because of how many enemies it can debuff

0:12 Note that the Magic "Subclasses" are really just items that look similar. There's no consistent functional differences between Tomes, Wands, and Magic Guns. You could reskin most of them and it wouldn't be weird. With Melee, Spears, Broadswords, Shortswords, and Flails have consistent traits. Ranger subclasses use different ammo types. Sentries are their own thing separate from minions, with their own slots. But the differences between magic weapon categories are largely just visual, since magic weapons of all categories are already so varied.

I love both the poison, and venom staff. it’s pretty easy to get if you make a safe box in a spider biome, and each projectile does huge damage, and pierces. Not even to mention the debuff

I love poison and venom staff so much, my first 1.3 playthrough I did I got it after like 15 spiders and it was so fun to use and I loved that unlike a lot of weapons it was actually able to be upgraded instead of being thrown away

I think a good point of comparison in these types of videos would be consumption rates. The holy trident's 19 mana every 17s (67 mana per second) gives it an overall higher mana consumption than the venom staff's 25 every 30s (50 mana per second) meaning you're going to be going through mana potions a lot more with it. I know this is pretty niche since you'll most likely be using the auto consumption effect of the Mana Flower, but I think it's still a nice thing to talk about, especially when consumption rates can be pretty important during the early game of a terraria world.

I've used it and it's a pretty nice complementary weapon, mainly because of the debuff. Also you can make Infested Spider Wall by throwing Spider walls at the shimmer, you can just make a farm or place the walls in an open area where you can hide and shoot them.

The venom staff is the absolute GOAT it is awesome it can carry you from pre plantera to post golem not only stopping there you can also take down the cultist if you had a good arena setup and it stops there I know there is some better post plantera and golem weapons but we are talking about how far this thing can reach into your game progress I'll rate it with a solid 9/10 thanks for reading

I always get this weapon solely to fight duke fishron, then I immediately put it in a chest forever once I get the razorblade typhoon. Then I proceed to use that to shred plantera and golem making quick work of both of them.

the black recluse is hard to deal with at first but after a few deaths you can fairly easily set up a farm in a way where they won't be able to damage you but you will be able to damage them (for example attacking from above works fine enough as well , they may be able to climb up walls they can only climb up to a certain point) so i don't think it's that bad to get , and 2.50% chance isn't that bad either when compared to A LOT of other weapons in the game

I was luckily able to get the poison staff as a random drop while in the caverns, once I defeated all the mech bosses I got the poison staff. The main strengths on this weapon is its high shotgun-like damage, I found it really useful in smaller areas such as caves and against enemies that have quick sporadic movements due to its spread. I also found it really useful in events due to the nice pierce of the weapon. It is also really good against plantera due to its huge size and the shots pierced the tendrils on its second phase. However it does mediocre at strong single targets and gets replaced really easily once plantera is defeated. Overall if your a mage and get a lucky poison staff drop like I did its defiantly worth it, but I don't see myself farming for this weapon anytime soon.

As someone who plays summoner most of the time, the poison/venom staff is always available for any friend playing mage. At 50 odd fangs needed for the full spider set and summons (more prior to shimmer for easier reforges) the staff's drop rate is not to low.

Would like to say that imo the farming for the poison staff is exaggerated. It's quite easy to kill recluses from a distance right after killing WOF. I found it to be my source of souls of night and light in some cases, and got multiple staffs by accident. It's generally good to kill these as soon as hardmode starts, due to the spider armor, which can be beneficial and make the beginning of hardmode much easier.

this is quite funny, I'm currently doing a master mode run - been rushing to plantera, but I decided I want to set up some farms, do some proper building and try some events, so I looked up weapons around my level and noticed I could get this pretty easily. For me this weapon was esssential duriang a mage playthrough. I think it's one of the best mage weapons for plantera and the farming process for it isn't even that bad (in my opinion). If anyone is looking for a good magic weapon post-mech I definetily recomend this.

I used this on my first two mage playthroughs (and still do) as I find it really useful due to it's shotgun-like projectile movement. I always make sure to pick it up when I have the chance. It's also super easy to farm for if you spawn a couple of summons that follow behind you (like the imps) and turn your back to the wall of the box and they'll just auto farm for you. I got it within 30 or so minutes by leaving terraria on and doing something else.

i used the venom staff in my For The Worthy playthrough, and i definently agree with your points. i personally wouldn't recommend grinding for it, but if you happen to get one then it's viable against bosses. it's at the very least good as a secondary for applying the venom debuff

I find it very useful for early fishron grinding. Its piercing ability is very useful for the bubble attack and the acid venom is good for when you need to back off and heal as it does damage whilst you can relax a lil and focus on dodging. So I find it as a key component for mage playthroughs.

I remember using it until I found the razorblade typhoon lol. If you are lucky enough to find a poison staff I would highly recommend upgrading it to a venom staff and trying it out, it's a cool weapon.

The poison staff and venom staff are very good and can be used in their progression, I always get spider armor first in mixed/no class playthroughs so I end up getting it a lot and it carries till post golem (I tend to get post plantera upgrades after golem)

I tend to see it used in my multiplayer runs. I typically play summoner so by the time I have the spider armor, spider staff, and queen spider staff, I typically have a poison staff or two I can give to the mage, and they'll typically make the venom staff until they can get a better crowd control weapon

When I first played terraria, I found the venom staff as an item which I had the option to craft. I already had the poison staff from when I was farming for the spider armour. I ended up using the Poison Staff for plantera, and farming the Frost Moon until I ha the razor pine

As a summoner, Black Recluses are mandatory to farm the moment we enter hard mode. As some others have mentioned, abusing the fact they can only climb walls is the key to farming them. Personally, I make a platform bridge above the spider biome and hammer/bomb out all the walls and blocks leading up to the platforms, making it easy to pick them off with ranged attacks (or summons/sentries). Walls can be used to fix the unevenness if desired to optimize where they move to. Blocks can also be used to shield against the Black Recluse's ranged attack (if summons/sentries/ricochet/homing weapons are used). Edit: Also going to add that outside of purist class challenges, Queen Spider Staff is a decent sentry that everyone should consider farming for anyway, so there's an additional incentive to farm these spiders as well.

As a summoner enjoyer, the first thing I do in hard mode is to farm black recluses, I usually get 1-2 staffs, I used to use the staff pre 1.4 when whips didn't exist, this staff and golden shower carried me quite hard when minions lacked damage.

I used it in conjunction with other mage weapons. It's got great dps for groups with bosses you can just use it to slap the debuff on and switch to a weapon with alil more fire power until the debuff goes away. The debuff is a big help for duke fishron, who can't stop himself from zooming around like an addict just hit em with the debuff

Black recluse are easy to farm if you take the wall mechanics into consideration, make a small cave with an entrance to small for them and it takes very little time to get it. When I play mage it’s a quick grab for me, the shotgun spray makes it easy to land your hits.

I used this staff pretty much every time I played summoner before whips were added, partly because I would find it pretty much every time I was looking for the material Brown Recluses drop for Spider armour! The poison staff was incredibly helpful in tandem with the ichor tome and my other menagerie weapon choices, allowing me to apply debuffs and pierce multiple targets Destroyer's multiple segments, the Two twins, and Skeletron Prime's limbs. It's upgrage performed a similar usecase on the other bosses, although after plantera/golem I would add the Terra blade to my kit.

I actually love this weapon. I never had problems with getting it because 2,5% sounds low, but the spawnrate in the spider caves is high and while exploring the underground you will come across one fairly easy(in my experience). And i would actually farm for it in every mage playthrou because the poisen staf is very good in early hardmode and the upgrade can carry you up till golem. Its good for crowds and single target and especially for close combat. One of my favorit mage weapons in the game.

Black Recluses are the opposite of Wolves in terms of spawn rates. I needed a Water Candle and Blood moon just to find 5 Wolves in one night. On the other hand, I got 54 spider fangs in 15 minutes.

I remember going for it early on when I just transitioned in my latest mage playthrough... It was "okay" not terrible, but not amazing either. It just has waaaaaaaay way way to wide a spread. It's basically a magic shotgun with aweful range where you practicly have to bury the barrel into the enemies chest. I feel like I swapped to better and longer range options rather quickly after getting it, and a lot of options pre plantera still feel like they kick it's upgraded version to the curb. Especially that staff from the second tier of the old ones army. has a solid burst fire, decently high crit, and it's alt fire is great for crowd control although funky underground and less than fantastic on platforms.

I actually always get the venom staff everytime I play as mage, as I always farm for spider armor at the start of hardmode as it's the easiest and best armor to get at the beginning of hardmode. And usually by the time that I finish farming for a whole spider set, I have at least one poison staff. I honestly never thought that this weapon was that obscure, as basically every vanilla playthrough, I used this weapon at some point.

I typically farm black recluses anyways for the fangs so when I played wizard I got it as my first hardmode weapon, and it shreds early hardmode. As most things do it sounds on the destroyer but I ended up using the life drain because sadly it had higher DPS against the snake, but I remember the poison staff being good against the other 2 mechs. The venom staff I remember being slightly underwhelming however it is still a great weapon, even if you stop using it post plantera, I'd say it's not quite mind breaking but it is a quality weapon besides that

Honestly i love this weapon it's really good against large groups and obtaining it isn't too hard, all you really need is something that can hit enemies through walls like the crystal vileshard then just build a wall and you can safely farm black recluses, it's the perfect weapon for killing plantera as mage

I've used the venom staff before, and I didn't really see it great. While it inflicted the acid venom debuff, I found its damage to mana cost off. I had several other magic weapons dealing the same damage, sometimes more, for a lower mana cost. The venom staff costs some ~25 mana to use and dealt 44 damage, versus the cursed flames, which costed significantly less at only maybe ~6 mana, but also dealt around 55 damage. It was also harder to obtain than the cursed flames, meaning I tossed it away after a few boss fights with it.
