Socorro is a medium-sized city of about 30,000 people, located in the southern part of the Santander region of Colombia. It is often only a passage between Bucaramanga and villages like Barichara, Guadalupe or even further, Villa de Leyva. Founded in the 17th century, it seems to have played an important role in the history of the country and was once the capital of its region. It is on the Pueblo patrimonio de Colombia list, although it has nothing to do with other villages on the list like Barichara or Jardin.
Socorro does have a historic center with old buildings typical of the colonial era, but it looks more like a largely urbanized city. On the outskirts of this hill-side center, there are many large, multi-storey buildings and shopping streets teeming with people!
The short walk to Socorro to visit its historic center is quite trying, it's not very big but the whole village is built on a hillside, and it does not go up much if you go to the convent at the top.
