I was 11 years old for Spain 82. Football was my world. I had never seen a full Brazil match so I was giddy with excitement. When Russia was leading with not much time left I was almost crying. Then Socrates did this. Almost cried with joy. A few minutes later and Eder scored an even more magical one. It was really true what people had said about Brazil. They played football from another more beautiful world.

I was a little kid watching world cup in 82.in Turkey. I was so influenced by Brazil and Socrates, i was still in surreal mode years after their loss in that world cup...they were 50 years ahead of the rest of the countries, but somehow an italian guy named Rossi and their goalkeeper zoff, miraculously eliminated Brazil. It was a bad luck as brazil winning every game by beautiful game, italy not winning a single game in the group advancing only by a goal difference ended up on top against brazil 3-2 in the knockout. Brazil could have beaten Italy next 9 games! and easily won the world cup. It made me so sad as a child i was a brazil fan die hard due to 82 team and Socrates .RIP Dr

I know the Brazillian side of 1982 never won the World Cup, but the won the hearts & minds of millions around the world. They played with such flair & beauty for the game that even people that were nationalistic about their own country secretly wanted Brazil to win the world cup if their country couldn't. Even now 30 years on everyone around the world talks about this side. Probably the best midfield I personally have ever seen play at the World Cup finals.The best one of the lot was Socrates.

The fact that this team is close to the 1970 Brazil team is a testament to how good they were....because that 1970 Brazil team was better than every other team by miles (except for this one...and maybe 1974 Netherlands)

I can date my love of football virtually to this goal. Watch how in the second before he gets the ball, Socrates has sized it all up and he knows almost exactly what’s going to happen next. It’s almost as if time stands still for him. Collects the ball, beats one, dummies another, and then fizzes an unstoppable shot into the top left-hand corner. A perfect goal. And the celebration; he didn’t resemble Jesus for nothing!

There were two Socrates: One anti democracy in ancient Greece, The other championed democracy in modern Brazil...both philosophers served their nations well. In this build-up three pairs of Soviet defenders collide trying to clear..but Socrates ended the debate almost effortlessly. I watched this match with one of my older brothers and we were dancing and yelling when Socrates scored. The BBC commentator was Barry Davies, I think: "Ohhh! What a beauty!" This Brazil is like vintage wine.. getting better with each decant. Immortal footage.

Whose in their late forties and recalls this as one of the first WC games they ever watched?...Another point do you know how well the Soviet Union played in this (one of the best international teams of the 1970s and 1980s)...?...they were immense...one of the greatest WC group matches of all time..

@sedraopamp - IT IS SUCH A SAD DAY FOR FOOTBALL. The side that SCORATES captained, played football against one of the toughest defences ever in World Cup History; and that was the Italian team. And they only just hung on. Their goalkeeper Dino Zoff pulled of wonder saves. But I speak for many around the world. They played football of the highest quality. People of today think that SPAIN played the best ever at a World cup. Tell them to get a DVD of this team. They will think differently!
