Wow. This has really helped me really grasp algebra much better. I like to see it applied in a concrete way where I can see clearly what X, Y, and Z represent. Thank you so much!! When next I cross the path of somebody struggling to grasp math or chemistry, I'll recommend this channel. :)

This is the video that introduced me to Socratica. I was searching for videos on balancing equations because I was tired of doing the trial and error method. Learning algebra was a pain for me because I just can't see the sense of all the numbers and letters. But here is this video using algebra to systematically balance equations. So I checked out the channel and the rest is history.

Where did the number 4 come from in 9:30? Is it the equivalent of A, B, C & D?
@Socratica
@Socratica 7 жыл бұрын
Great question, Robert! We are multiplying through by 4 to get rid of the 5/4 fraction in front of the O2. It will get rid of the 3/2 fraction in front of the H2O as well. You can multiply the entire equation by any number you want, as long as you multiply both sides. Imagine you multiply the entire equation by 2 - that's just saying you have double all of the amounts. Multiplying by 4 just means you have 4 of these reactions running simultaneously. It doesn't change the balancing of the equation - it just makes the numbers easier to deal with.

The background music suggests that music is needed in order to learn. Background music in a classroom would interrupt and compete with the main purpose of the classroom which is for students to learn, but not to be hearing music or any other sounds which interrupt or compete with the instruction.

@Socratica
@Socratica 8 жыл бұрын
Usually - just to make things easier. If you set one variable to 1, you are automatically simplify the process of solving for the other variable(s). If you set it to something else, you'll just wind up having to simplify (divide through by some number) at the end. Try it and see! Thanks for watching :) If you found our video helpful, share it! That really helps us grow.

On 7:40 you said that no. Of hydrogen are equal on both sides.how is this possible 2H and 2H are not same
@Socratica
@Socratica 9 жыл бұрын
Raj Singh Thank you for watching and commenting! Could you give a little more detail to your question? Is it possible you mean a different time than 7:40? Do you mean at 8:03? The idea is, when the equation is balanced, the # of hydrogen atoms are equal. So we write out the equations to reflect that - and we are solving for the coefficients which will allow the number of hydrogens to be the same on both sides.

Nive video. I was trying to practice this method on a more substantial equation however... Would love a video on algebraic method for: Urea + sodium carbonate = sodium cyanate + CO2 + NH3 + H2O Urea = (NH2)2CO sodium carboante = Na2CO3 sodium cyanate = NaNCO The equation isn't hard to balance by inspection, but I made a mess of it using the algebraic method. :( and I ran out of steam :(

Raj Singh Ah, I see! What we know is that *when* the equation is balanced properly, the number of H atoms will be the same on both sides of the equation. To find the number of H atoms on the left, it will be some coefficient (we'll call it a) in front of NH3, and you multiply that by 3 (from the H3) to get the total number of H atoms on the left. Imagine, when it is balanced, that it turns out the coefficient is 2. Then 2NH3 means there would be a total of 6H atoms. In other words, 3a (3times 2) = 6. You do the same thing for the right side of the equation. There are Hs in H2O. We don't know what the coefficient is in the final balanced equation, so it is an unknown, a variable. Let's call that variable d. To find the total number of H atoms on the right, multiply that coefficient by the number of H atoms (there are 2 H atoms in H2O). So on the right, the total number of H atoms will be 2d. As we said before, when the chemical equation is properly balanced, the number of H atoms will be the same on the left and the right, so that's how we get 3a = 2d. We continue to do this for all the atoms in the chemical equation (so do the same thing for N and O) and then you have a set of equations where you can solve for the unknowns a,b,c, and d. Good luck! And thanks for watching! :)

For the steps used to solve example 3 you have 3 equation with 4 unknowns. This would mean that you cannot solve the system of equations. I see that the way you got around this is explicity defining one of the unkonws as "a=1". My question is how did you know to put "a=1" and not something like "d=1"? is this convetion to define the non oxygen coefficent as 1.

@Socratica
@Socratica 3 жыл бұрын
This is a good question, and something that people often miss the first time they try this method. The idea is, you are SETTING one of the values to 1. IF it is one, then what will the other values be? You solve for all the others. It's a way to simplify the math right from the start. You could just as easily set that value to 5, or 10, or some other number, but then you'd wind up having to simplify it later. You can give it a try!
