Andy quiso hacer una gira por Latinoamérica con temas de The Police, pero con Cerati como vocalista y guitarra. I was one of the lucky ones who saw The Police on December 16, 1980 in Mar del Plata, seven blocks from where I live now. Queen also visited us on those days. Simply shocking. That first version of Soda effectively refers us to the sound of The Police.

This is from their 1984 debut album. Which Gustavo admits it was partly influenced by the police. Btw, Gustavo later played with the police's Andy Summers in a police tribute album in spanish. There's video of their collaboration here on youtube.

Soda Stereo joined the New Wave music movement of the 80s. You are absolutely right, D. You'll hear influences definitely from the Police, but also from the Cure, U2, even some punk (the Clash) and Ska. Later, more elaborated work, became also influenced by the earlier progressive and psychodelic rock era from the 70s, so there you will hear a style also reminiscent to Yes, Genesis, and Pink Floyd. Even with these clear influences, Gustavo Cerati was at the front line of music experimentation, always adopting the latest gadgets, and very aware of sound style trends from Europe and the US. Gustavo's perfectionism, hard work, polirythm composition, and overall creative genius produced a sound unique to himself, even aside from his unmistakable voice.

Hi D, i grew up listening to Soda and was my favorite band in my teen years. I am from Colombia and we loved Soda over here. I can't listen to their music without getting all teary eyes, make me remember my friends, my girlfriends having parties and getting crazy with their music.
