If these questions are related to Stories of Sodor, I know the answers to some of these: 1. I wouldn't believe Edward would be depressed about his class being scrapped after 1923. Knowing Stories of Sodor, Edward knows it's just life. 2. Edward does remember his younger years, he loves to tell stories in universe. He told stories about his younger years in the episodes: 'Furness' and 'Industry'. 3. Gordon doesn't have a second funnel like an A3. 4. For Thomas' early years, you have check the Sodor Special: A History of its Railways. It shows part of Thomas' backstory there. 5. James' backstory was kind of mentioned in the Stories of Sodor episode: Armaments

In the original story, from "The Three Railway Engines," Gordon breaks down near the tunnel where Henry is blocked in. Edward is the only spare engine, and cannot move the train. Henry is therefore brought out of the tunnel, and both he and Edward pull the train. There is no derailment.
