No, the sofa is free standing in front of the bed.

Nice! But there are sofa beds in the market that do the same without that wood wall behind the sofa. Is this for a reason? Otherwise I don’t see the utility...

I think the main benefit is that sofa-bed matresses are not typically very comfortable (and have to be thin to fit in the sofa when folded up). This allows for a normal mattress to essentially just be stored vertically. Just my guess.
