So sorry to hear of the great Larry Collins passing!! Larry was a true innovator of early Rock n Roll even before ELVIS !! 🙏😥 Also I was unaware of Larry’s legendary partner and Sister Laurie Collins passing😮🙏

For a kid at his age to play guitar as he did was & still is something to behold. Laurie had the looks & voice of an angel & Larry could rock the hell out that Mosrite , he was way underrated & i bet he scared the heck out the other guitarists around him.

I recently discovered the Collins kids. I was born in 1957 and up until recently I never heard of them. to me, they are as new a rockabilly band as the rest and an amazing duo. Man, can that kid play a guitar! Needless to say, I'm now a fan.

Great stuff! I discovered the Collins Kids in the mid-1980's while working at a record store - it was the vinyl best-of that gets shown here, which grabbed me from the first notes of "Hoy Hoy". They made some truly great records despite being something of a novelty act. Sexy teen girl with great voice and manic 10-year-old boy with double-neck guitar was not an often used formula, and frankly I'm surprised they didn't become bigger. I guess Lorrie's romantic life made for some obstacles towards the end, but the Kids certainly had the talent and TV appeal to have been an Ed Sullivan Show phenomenon if the opportunity had arisen. At least these clips survive to prove that yes, Larry really was like that.
@actionsubАй бұрын
Long story short, they peaked at the wrong time. Rockabilly was being replaced on the charts by doo-wop, and their record company didn't quite give them the support they needed. Even Ricky Nelson as a would-be patron and romantic interest for Lorrie didn't help much, especially since Ozzie didn't approve of their relationship.

My buddy and I drove his 1960 Olds all the way from Orange County up to San Francisco to see this show at Bimbo's. Art, you hung out with George Wendt "Norm" from Cheers. That night we found out that the Collins Kids were to perform at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood the following weekend. We went to that show, too.

Awesome and thank you so much. The Collins Kids remain almost totally unknown in the UK. When I started coming across the odd Town Hall Party clip on KZbin, I was hooked. The Bear Party compilations are awesome. As an aside I can never understand why Joe Maphis never hits the greatest guitarists of all time lists - probably because he is BC - Before Clapton

I had been to Bimbos a few years prior to the recording to see their out-of-this-world back stage kitchen. If i remember correct, they had hanging racks of beef like in the Rocky I movie where they aged it. They also had the world's most spectacular collection of cooper pots from tiny to huge. The big pot was big enough to have been used in the movie king kong's jungle scene. The wife of one of the SF area's political officials said she used to swim at Bimbos as an entertainment attraction in a large fish bowl wearing a g-string. This Californian's senator's wife also came out of the Berkley hippie movement, but that's another story. While it would seem that Lori Collins might have been part of the political and moral corruption happening now in California, the opposite is probably true. Her brother, Larry Collins (who wrote that famous song about Oklahoma or Tulsa - I can't recall which) is known to be a straight arrow Jesus follower who takes the Blood bought redemption story seriously.

I wouldn't say they were better than Elvis. Not unlike Elvis, many of their songs, were too, cover versions of Blues, and R&B songs, with a western swing interpretation. Besides, Elvis had that charisma and presence that was unmatched.
