The hardest part about developing this technology was thinking up secondary and tertiary uses for it that they could present for research grants as the reason they're making it. :D Early on in development: "Oh, it will obviously sell. But we need to think of some sort of scientific use for it, in order to get the funding to build the damn thing."

I wonder if such sensors could be built into the feet of robots, to get ground composition feedback to aid movement. For example, I can easily figure out if the ground is slippery or not, as well as recognise if gum or a rock is stuck under my shoe, and where.

I'm proud of myself. My mind didn't go to that place till I read the comments. Surely there are more appropriate uses. Measuring grapes?! That sounds slow and ineffective for a product you'd need to get through large batches of, even if you only measure one out of batch each time. Does the feel of grapes tell you much? I would have thought a camera is far simpler, quicker and more effective at checking something like grapes.

Why use it for measuring grapes if you could instead use it to measure the strength of metal structures? Figure out how much pressure the bot would need to apply before a metallic structure bends, crushes, or is otherwise compromised. And contrary to what the comments have been saying, using a bot like that for "personal" purposes sounds really uncomfortable and actually kinda painful.

He only talks about resistance to create a delay. But this would really only delay later legs while the first ones would be under pressure almost the whole time. I would imagine they also need something to create some sort of phase shift. Maybe cavities or the robot itself act as capacitance? But he did not mention it. Or is it so obvious? ... Maybe I should have just commented on the second most obvious thing?
