Caterpillar Drill/Game: This is a fun drill/game to wrap up you practice helping your players be in ready position, develop quick reaction to the sound of the ball hitting the bat and then making accurate throws to 1st base.
*
Setup of Drill: Setup your players in a single line behind each other staring from the 3rd base position. Assign a number to each player. Have a coach on 1st base or use a Bownet to receive the throws from the players. Have all the players in ready position.
*
Step 1: Have one coach hit ground balls to the left of the line of players. As soon as the coach hits a ground ball. Have another coach shout one of the assigned range of numbers. (Ex. 1 - 12). The number that is called for that assigned player must move out of the line and field the ground ball cleanly and make a strong accurate throw to 1st base coach on the base or into the bownet. If that players lets the ball go by them, doesn’t field the ball properly or makes a bad throw to 1st base. That player is out of the line/game.
*
Step 2: Keep doing the same this, until they’re one player left. When there is one player left, they still have to field the ground ball cleanly and make an accurate throw to 1st base. If that player is able to do that, they are the winner of the game.
*
Rules of the drill/game: After each play and that player is able to execute the play properly, have that player move to the back of the line and then have all the other players move within that single line, to change their positions in line. Gradually increase how hard the ground balls are hit, when a player is knocked out of the game.
