Never was really a big fan of the Prophet 5 back in the day .. I chose the OBXa then switched to a Jupiter 8 as my working axe back in the day, but having said that this is obviously a very very good emulation of the P5 .. no difference to these 64yo ears. I see no need to have any analog synthesizers anymore with modern computer technology and VST’s. I still have a dozen old analogs laying around the house and they’re just dust traps .. a pain in the arse to keep dusted and clean, and they just jack my electricity bill up when they’re running. I only keep em around for nostalgic sake .. but even that’s gotten old. Perhaps I’ll revisit the Prophet 5 for giggles vicariously through this softube plugin. A belated thanks man for this review.

For many (including myself) part of the magic of a hardware synth is the physical interface/workflow. If having this as a VST instrument makes sense in the rest of a setup and that is a priority the SoundForce SFC-5 could be just the ticket as a controller.
@SebasAdamo
@SebasAdamo Жыл бұрын
The SFC-5 is indeed a fantastic Prophet 5 plugin controller (and also usable for many other plugins) and works much better than a generic MIDI controller because of the layout.
@MichaelScott-ly2zo
@MichaelScott-ly2zo Жыл бұрын
I totally agree that tactile control is all important, but it’s somehow more than that. I had the SFC-5 (& still have the U-he & Arturia softsynths) but yet I still found myself looking at the screen. Eventually sold some stuff to fund an actual P5 & never looked back. Hard to explain but there is something so immediate & satisfying about twiddling knobs on a hardware unit that I never got from plug-ins, even with dedicated controllers like the SFC-5.

In my opinion, some of the Dave Smith synths sound a little bit digitalish anyway, especially the newer ones. not in a warth way they're too precise with the digital control and the all-in-one packages they use. you don't really get the movement like you would do on a Moog etc etc unless you use the slop that is or a little tiny bit of pitch modulation etc etc. Not taking anything away from the plugin though it sound identical.
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
I wonder whether thats a result of older synths having the vintage tone due to degrading components (hence the addition of slop).People say similar things about the Moog One. I wonder what a brand new 1980 Prophet 5 would sound like. I guess I'll never know. I've really got no idea what the differences might be... would be a fun experiment but unfortunately its impossible.

Sounds like, but it is not a Prophet. All these emulations, Cherry audio, Softube, U-he, Arturia - its all good if you want to swap one patch, if you need it to layer something. However, even if we set aside pros and cons of having hardware unit, P10 is an absolute winner over all emulations, due to the new features - stack, poly unison, q compensation and many others. I have Prophet 10, OB6, REV2, Evolver... had P08 and 12 too, there is something in Sequential poly synths that sounds unique and sticks with you when you use them for a longer period of time. P5/10 oscillators are raw monsters, however, you might get me fooled if i listen to super compressed lossy format - but there is no mistake with both Curtis and Rossum filters engaged. Add vintage to it, i can tell software from hardware. That drift of the envelope shapes is a spot on tell, especially on a Rossum SSI filter. It is nice to see good software alternatives though.

@@StarskyCarr OK, I get ya. But remember, if we don't know the backstory, sending out a blanket burn might hit the wrong ear, like mine. I was kind of hurt, but I admit, I am a bit touchy. No scattergun replies please! I think your videos are great, really the best synth channel I know of. However, I never like to be told my opinion doesn't matter, even if it is shared by some meanie. The comp picked my ass viciously. I am sorry if others responded with a hack and slash, that's lousy. I assumed you must make enough money to do it for a living, because your presentations are so good and plentiful. I find it discouraging that you aren't compensated properly. You deserve to be fully supported, your work is too good. Thanks for taking the time to explain your reasoning to me, I appreciate your respect and the time you donate. I'd like to think our fandom is payment, but maybe I owe you more. Duly noted. You are right, people who snipe you are not fans, f**k those dudes. I humbly apologize for my assumption. Peace man.

It's so far from a P5 that you didn't even try the usual tricks you love to compare softwares to the real synths (take the common minimum and show that it's the same sound, I've seen all your videos or almost and I understood your operating mode :-) ). But this time you didn't dare. That says a lot, and confirms what my ears have heard, a simple VST, once the placebo effect of a P5 appearance removed. So, no, it's not convincing. And the fault is not with the demo which is always well done (apart the left/right trick that is indeed confusing). But you can't make a racehorse out of a donkey... not your fault.

The left/right thing is a nightmare, comparing single ear sources on headphones only?? Awful. Impossible to tell the difference with your review technique.

The point is that there’s so little difference it sounds like the super 6 binaural effect - there’s little point in playing 2 essentially identical tones next to each other. It became a bizarre crazed comparison of a lunatic listening to the same thing twice. Maybe I could do a comedy version doing just that.

@@StarskyCarr Every other channel that compares soft synths to hardware plays one, then plays the other. I totally don't understand your technique for the majority of people, and I've never seen it done by anyone else. Just saying.

Yeah you seriously can’t compare them when one is panned left and one is panned right. I’m not going to download your youtube video and play it through my DAW so i can send left and right channels into mono with solos to compare them. Softube makes great stuff so i’m sure it’s close. But you’re not allowing people to hear a real comparison. This video is cool but essentially useless as a comparison. I know a lot of people can’t hear a difference but i’m a professional mix engineer with 35 years experience so i can. And I appreciate a proper comparison for professionals, not just comment fodder for opinionated 19 year old synth nerds. Ymmv.

I wager that making videos all day is a very nice way to live. It would be nice if when you feel contempt for your viewers you wouldn't share it with them.
@StarskyCarr

This is a hobby that just about pays for itself so there’s that to consider before assuming I’m paid to play with synths all day. I’m not. …. It’s not contempt, most people enjoyed it last time, only a few really vociferous people got very annoyed. I think I’m allowed to do things my own way and not cower from people who don’t give any useful feedback.. just take the videos and complain if there’s something they don’t like it’s not like anyone’s paying for a service. Most people are grateful for the effort I put in, which is considerable. This took many days and I did it for free. Probably made about £20 from adverts… so there’s all that to consider when thinking I show contempt. I don’t, I just do what I do and try to make it interesting, informative, fun and musical.

Filters are identical--what? you didn't even compare them, you just put them both in to self-resonance. You could use any synth and say they were "identical." What is this channel? It's just total bs, actually makes me a little mad.
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
I've done so many filter sweeps on 100s of videos tbh that these were so similar I was just going over old ground,.. and felt like a bit of a psycho.Like comparing 2 identical mugs.. just seemed pointless. I have to try to balance the length of the videos, interest and pace with relevant info. If there was something to talk about I'd have shown it and discussed why they were different. Maybe got the balance wrong for you this time? Calling it total BS is a bit off the mark. Be mad but there's tones of info in here. Sorry the specific bit you were after isn't.

@@StarskyCarr I say an objective reviewer/tester would try to prove they are different, not the same. Anything else is a sales pitch. If you've done 100s of these, you know enough to know where to look.
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
@@nuriamarti100 an objective review doesn't try to prove anything... simply demos what's there. If there are differences they are demo'd if not you don't try to find stuff for the sake of it. That's not objective. So yeah I do know where to look, I looked and I found there was nothing of note to comment on.

@@StarskyCarr OK but I can't remember any of your reviews where you say this synth does not do a good job of emulating the hardware its based on. Or hardware does not sound like the original. I guess I have different expectations when something is said to be "identical." No hard feelings here.
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
@@nuriamarti100 yeah but there’s loads of stuff I haven’t connected with and haven’t done a review. Just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean others won’t, but I’m not going to take it down just because I don’t connect. I also get loads of grief when I’m not sure about something. The OBX8 is a good example - and I even bought it. Having a negative response to something gives me so much hassle I’ve taken stuff down and moved on. So you’re right, you’ll only see videos where I like something, or I find a unique angle to use it, or can appreciate what it is. Take a look at my Cherry Audio 106 comparison. I like the idea of it but just couldn’t get it to sound like my 106. For the price it was worth it, but it’s not an exact emulation if my hardware and I say that. Off the top of my head.. don’t think I was very complimentary about the Odyssey software I tried (maybe you haven’t watched them all!) I’ve even been sent hardware to review that I’ve spent a while trying to understand and sent it back.
