Voxel are points with volume. In Minecraft they make it 1 qubic meter with sharp edges but here its smaller points and less of a grid pattern when working so its possible to create soft structures. But placing new points\voxel on a surfacte thats rounded leads to "holes" that get filled by "roundness" and to a excess of space... lets say the dirt is now less dense then it was before to explain the growing towers.
@circuitgamer77598 ай бұрын
I don't know if you'll look at it more later, but "voxels" is a condensed word for "volume pixels" (from the 3d grid structure). I don't know exactly what system Hydroneer uses, but there's a lot of ways to take voxels and smooth them out. The one I know best is marching cubes, which feels likely to me for this game, but there's a lot. It's quite fun to implement marching cube systems from scratch :) I made a really simple and slow system a while ago to learn about it, but it wasn't anywhere near good enough to actually be useful for anything. And I didn't even get to the part of the system that smooths out the edges (I don't know if that part has a name, but it probably does and I don't know what it is), which is simple but really neat. Anyway, time for me to continue the video :)

so something to remember, not everyone is as insane as josh. so when something is 'exploitable' but you have to invest a couple dozen hours into it to achieve that, it's not really a priority for devs. you're 100% free to destroy your world if you want to invest the hours into it, the only victims are you and your computer. so my guesses are: on the dirt producing extra, it probably avoids soft locking by removing too much dirt while shaping your claim. so you have a way to restore it back to a useable state. on the bouncing resources in the forge, they dont want you to accidentally lose materials because you tossed in the wrong one, so it bounces straight up so you can grab it rather than being flung off into the room at random and getting lost.

“Palworld you had to wait for timers” Ah, I understand. See, your issue is that it derives actually a lot of gameplay from Ark: Survival Evolved, which is famous for taking a real life week to raise the biggest dinosaurs. And in that week, you must log in every 4 hours to press e on your dinosaur or it misses important buffs. And the server is always running. So with that context, Palworld is SO much better than Ark. it improved on its blueprint, but the blueprint itself disrespects the players time so… I can see why you’re not a fan.

The system that defines the digging and cave function is probably set on isosurfaces based on the marching cubes algorithm. Yes, its a voxel system mas much refined. You can think about it like a "skin" on invisible voxels. You can read more in here if you are interessed: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marching_cubes An yes voxels are cubes, normal with 6 quad faces (or 12 polygons) and are to 3D as a pixel is for 2D, so you are kinda right. The diference here is that these "voxels" aren't visible and they are actualy what is called a scalar field (density values) where each "voxel" tells the "skin" how curvy she should wrap around the "voxel". If you like computer graphics and matematical algorithms, its fascinating.

I believe the technical term for the surface here a deformable mesh, on which their is an overlaid a texture. When you remove a point from the mesh it recalculates a new mesh without that point (or rather moves it a set distance). Similarly if you drop material (not items) on the mesh it adds a new point and recalculates the surface mesh. The mesh is usually a triangular grid of adjacent points, but at time it recalculates the mesh it can leave orphans and spikes hanging in the air (after all you have calculate fast, not accurately so it lacks the spline smoothing of the original landscape). You are pretty much just dealing with 2D surfaces as far as the graphics engine is concerned.. In Hydroneer only certain locations are deformable (diggable) to reduce calculations, but objects can be placed anywhere (the rest of the world is a non-deformable mesh). A voxel is something quite different. It is a 3D element with a 3D position (just as a pixel is a 2D surface with a specific locat6ion on a surface).. It can have textures on each surface or be transparent, although only visible surfaces should be rendered Minecraft is the classic example of an actual voxel-based game, and there were situations with old versions where you could fool the engine on which side of the block you were so you magically got X-Ray vision. In ii's original form it also used a central origin for generating the location of voxels leading to the "far lands" problem where the coordinate system couldn't manage any more. [This is why Starfiield is probably unfixable (and why it needs to use many loading screens to reset the origins). Again accumulated technical debt from using an old engine hits hard.] Oh and the grind at the beginning of Hydroneer is a thing. It's theoretically to encourage getting automation as fast as possible, but it does affect restarting a game to try out the new updates. And yes the physics collision engine is fun. You can really go flying out the universe, which is why people and vehicles have a reset to starting location button.

Assuming you haven't played this yet, you can estimate how long initial automation takes right there... the two Tier 1 machines plus pipes would maybe be about 1000 "c"s, Josh got a gold nugget for 11, so just imagine doing enough panning to make that, including any iron pieces which would be worse less. Modifying if you choose to dig down (which means buying a pickaxe I think?) where better loot awaits. Personally I can't d games like this at all anymore. Realized life is too short, etc, for games which force any kind of semi-mindless hours of labor or grinding. At least once you automate there's the more stimulating process of designing and optimizing your "digging engine" and using vehicles. Course then there's the hours of driving to the store for parts and delivering them. THey could make this game a hundred times more fun by offering parts delivery, maybe even make a character that's fun and memorable to deliver them! A freaking steampunk water-driven airship floats overhead. "Got 'nother one for ya guvnah!" our friend in the sky calls as he drops us another pallet of pipes, for a small fee of course. For the ultimate in amazing, do a crossover with Death Stranding. I don't know how it would work, I'm not the details guy. Anyway the star of the game would roll up with a comedically huge stack of boxes on his back. Tell me that isn't a people pleasing idea.
