What's burned you out in the past? What do you do to avoid burnout?
@CarlosHernandez-wb5hq3 жыл бұрын
I think it may be the time where I was trying out the uber method which is a different style of sleeping where you can only take 4 hours of sleep with naps in between and doing both community college and high school. Of course I dont do that anymore. As a way to avoid, sometimes i take a day break during the week but do some work but max would be 2 - 3 hours and rest for the rest of the day.

Take it from me ( I code for over 5 years... ) If you want to be happy don't become a software developer. Do you want some reasons? - Web Tech changes every couple of monts, you need to continousle learn or you become absolete - Burnout deadlinse - Contrary to popular belife only 10% of Tech Engineers are self thought you will need University to break in.. - Tech goes remote / work from home/ rainbow farts and honey poison/ what I mean it will be outsourced to 3rd word countries like what happend with most Accounting jobs - Competition is insane for the money what I mean you can learn building engineering or build bridges and you will have less absolasence as an Enginner but Software Engineers always live on the edge of being replaced.. - Juniour Software Developer market is oversaturated there are too many people. What bussinesses need is people with HIGH skill not LOW junior skill. So don't belive that saying that there is always demand for coding jobs, because that is a flat lie!! - Depression and loneliness, you are always alone as a Web Developer, remember? work remotely? and all that jazz - Unhealthy sitting at a desk staring at the monitor for 12hours a day will destroy your body. Don't belive me? Do that for a couple of years and you will see the effects. - You really need a high above averate IQ to deal with abstract problems every single day of your life. It nevers stops! Always problems!!! - If you still want to do it, probably you hate yourself really bad... or you hate social interactions... either way, I just wanted to warn you!!! because most of KZbin Coder Influencers lie to you by only telling the good parts. Because they want to seel you the dream and a course on how to code a "Hello World" program. - Software Engineering is HARD, you can see that in the name, it is ENGINEERING it is as hard as building bridges or being a Doctor. Don't underestimate it how hard and mind burning this field is.

Well i got notice that i wont be employed just one day before my final test... I only ever liked our C++ nerd, the rest started to pick on me during my final test and final project because they did not like me personally and constantly made fun about my hobbies... It is really hard to keep up with the tech enhancements. I sometimes think that I have no life :( I have no wife, no kids, no house. I work, read, learn and that's it. I burnt out completely around by the end of Jan this year. I'm still recovering... everything you pointed out has helped me over the past 6 months. The biggest kicker is the sleep schedule. It's SO difficult with the sunset and sunrise changing so drastically. I recommend those who are having trouble to get some blackout curtains. That helped me regulate my sleep somewhat, even though it's making me get up a little later. It's better than waking up, feeling groggy, then can't think well for the rest of the day.

I have a bad habit of doing things in bug chunks, burning out, then coming back later. I've been playing about with reworking my life the past year because I also hit a really bad slump, also exercising way more than I was capable and then got really ill for a few weeks. The 2 things I've found most important, its fine to work in big heavy, burnout inducing chunks, but take a break. Take days of break if you need where possible, regularly, change your current focus to some other interest. And when you take breaks, breaks are breaks, don't slide back into a work mindset because "I'll just do this one thing"... Especially with programming... It's such a deep rabbit whole, once you're in, its a long climb up to get back out for the day.

I already had mental health issues and steered towards burnout, even before I got my first developer job, in the first semesters of university. For me the only option was a therapy, but I guess it's an individual case. Nevertheless I started with photography during the pandemic and this helped me aot in the last wlfew months. I had the chance to go outside, sometimes I went by bycicle, sometimes by foot, and I think it has a very similar principle like meditation since you have to kinda focus, but you also have to let your senses wander freely (and thus calm down). As a nice benefit you can get some really nice photos to look at later or show them to others. ;)

While some survival tips are appreciated, I think it's important to put the focus where it should be: burnout comes from the outside, not from the inside. You can meditate, change your mindset, exercise and all of those will help, but ultimately, burnout is caused by your work environment, not by how you perceive it. And while you can definitely do something to improve the way you look at it, ultimately you can't fix your environment by trying to fix yourself. No amount of meditation will fix unrealistic deadlines, poor processes, bad bosses and excessive expectations. The way out of burnout is to fix what is causing it. If your job is causing you too much stress, re-discuss your working conditions or switch jobs.

Its actually also really important to realise and understand, why you are working hard. Sometimes you have to sacrifice your time and health, but in that case you must know the answer - why? In harsh times it might keep you in place. And, yes, as for me yoga is pretty helpful. Nothing too fancy, but few times in a week for an hour or sow - and your body will be grateful. You'll be able to learn programming during university. If you want you could start exploring programming right away to get a headstart. Since you've got plenty of time in college, I'd say start with Java or C++. They may be harder to pick up than some newer languages like JavaScript and Python, but understanding them will build a better foundation and make transition to other languages much easier.
