I think it may be the time where I was trying out the uber method which is a different style of sleeping where you can only take 4 hours of sleep with naps in between and doing both community college and high school. Of course I dont do that anymore. As a way to avoid, sometimes i take a day break during the week but do some work but max would be 2 - 3 hours and rest for the rest of the day.

Take it from me ( I code for over 5 years... ) If you want to be happy don't become a software developer. Do you want some reasons? - Web Tech changes every couple of monts, you need to continousle learn or you become absolete - Burnout deadlinse - Contrary to popular belife only 10% of Tech Engineers are self thought you will need University to break in.. - Tech goes remote / work from home/ rainbow farts and honey poison/ what I mean it will be outsourced to 3rd word countries like what happend with most Accounting jobs - Competition is insane for the money what I mean you can learn building engineering or build bridges and you will have less absolasence as an Enginner but Software Engineers always live on the edge of being replaced.. - Juniour Software Developer market is oversaturated there are too many people. What bussinesses need is people with HIGH skill not LOW junior skill. So don't belive that saying that there is always demand for coding jobs, because that is a flat lie!! - Depression and loneliness, you are always alone as a Web Developer, remember? work remotely? and all that jazz - Unhealthy sitting at a desk staring at the monitor for 12hours a day will destroy your body. Don't belive me? Do that for a couple of years and you will see the effects. - You really need a high above averate IQ to deal with abstract problems every single day of your life. It nevers stops! Always problems!!! - If you still want to do it, probably you hate yourself really bad... or you hate social interactions... either way, I just wanted to warn you!!! because most of KZbin Coder Influencers lie to you by only telling the good parts. Because they want to seel you the dream and a course on how to code a "Hello World" program. - Software Engineering is HARD, you can see that in the name, it is ENGINEERING it is as hard as building bridges or being a Doctor. Don't underestimate it how hard and mind burning this field is.

I worked my ass off in training, did everything from website, print design to C++ medical app development and working for free. I brought my drunken and high AF Dr. boss home while he almost pissed himself and talked how i will care for the new trainees after i am done with training. What did i get in the end? Well i got notice that i wont be employed just one day before my final test... I only ever liked our C++ nerd, the rest started to pick on me during my final test and final project because they did not like me personally and constantly made fun about my hobbies... This and being basically fired threw me back deep into depression and substance abuse (i was 4 years clean then) as i just gave everything for that company at the time.

It is really hard to keep up with the tech enhancements. I sometimes think that I have no life :( I have no wife, no kids, no house. I work, read, learn and that's it. Even if I am getting the money, I can't properly spend it. Who needs a profession that takes your life? I've had a talk with a bank employee about having a sad job and she told me that her job sucks and not mine. I guess everyone had his/her problems. That's life I guess.

If you don't take care of yourself, chances of other people helping you are pretty low. Don't live to work. Work to live. If your body and your mind are not working properly, there's no way you are going to do your job correctly. ANd that build up frustration, and it's really easy to get into that loop, and really difficult to get out of it. Take care of you, and enjoy your life fully. Love you!

Great advice Sam! 👍 Rest assured that burnout is very common outside of the tech industry too. Coming from the animation industry, I can confirm that it's very often that animators and creatives are driven to exhaustion very often in an effort to prove that they're good at what their jobs. It's really encouraging watching people acknowledge the importance of physical and mental health outside of work lately! Keep up the good work! 👍

I burnt out completely around by the end of Jan this year. I'm still recovering... everything you pointed out has helped me over the past 6 months. The biggest kicker is the sleep schedule. It's SO difficult with the sunset and sunrise changing so drastically. I recommend those who are having trouble to get some blackout curtains. That helped me regulate my sleep somewhat, even though it's making me get up a little later. It's better than waking up, feeling groggy, then can't think well for the rest of the day.

a thing most developers neglect is their emotional health, especially supressed past traumas, undealth stuff..... I mean we burnout because we are working compulsively and if we deal with emotioanl shit then it's easy to not work, and just focus on the things that matter in the work itself, to not create bugs and stress

Most of the advice is the common sense, what you really need is friends at work. Once you have friends at work, your work ethic and engagement rises and motivation for work comes. The thing is it's harder to develop friendships with everything being remote these days.

I have a bad habit of doing things in bug chunks, burning out, then coming back later. I've been playing about with reworking my life the past year because I also hit a really bad slump, also exercising way more than I was capable and then got really ill for a few weeks. The 2 things I've found most important, its fine to work in big heavy, burnout inducing chunks, but take a break. Take days of break if you need where possible, regularly, change your current focus to some other interest. And when you take breaks, breaks are breaks, don't slide back into a work mindset because "I'll just do this one thing"... Especially with programming... It's such a deep rabbit whole, once you're in, its a long climb up to get back out for the day.

Really good video on a topic that's often overlooked - to keep a high performance machine running at an optimum level it needs frequent scheduled maintenance, the body is no different, especially when you're involved in a highly competitive activity. If you want optimum performance you have to put in the time to perform maintenance on yourself.

I already had mental health issues and steered towards burnout, even before I got my first developer job, in the first semesters of university. For me the only option was a therapy, but I guess it's an individual case. Nevertheless I started with photography during the pandemic and this helped me aot in the last wlfew months. I had the chance to go outside, sometimes I went by bycicle, sometimes by foot, and I think it has a very similar principle like meditation since you have to kinda focus, but you also have to let your senses wander freely (and thus calm down). As a nice benefit you can get some really nice photos to look at later or show them to others. ;)

While some survival tips are appreciated, I think it's important to put the focus where it should be: burnout comes from the outside, not from the inside. You can meditate, change your mindset, exercise and all of those will help, but ultimately, burnout is caused by your work environment, not by how you perceive it. And while you can definitely do something to improve the way you look at it, ultimately you can't fix your environment by trying to fix yourself. No amount of meditation will fix unrealistic deadlines, poor processes, bad bosses and excessive expectations. The way out of burnout is to fix what is causing it. If your job is causing you too much stress, re-discuss your working conditions or switch jobs.

Its actually also really important to realise and understand, why you are working hard. Sometimes you have to sacrifice your time and health, but in that case you must know the answer - why? In harsh times it might keep you in place. And, yes, as for me yoga is pretty helpful. Nothing too fancy, but few times in a week for an hour or sow - and your body will be grateful. We just finished our midterm and I feel burned out. I graduate at the end of the fall ( so I am motivated by that), however, right now I feel really stressed, burnt out, and depressed. Is this normal to feel? And if so do you have any tips for dealing with this as a student? Thanks in advance. Side note- I’m averaging about 3 hours a day studying + full time job

Hi, I'm 19, I graduated this year (in Germany) and now I'm planning to get a degree in computer science. Since I'm yet unable to write code I wanted to ask whether it's a good idea to study computer science without any pre-knowledge of coding. If not, which language could some of you recommend to learn in advance of my studies? Thanks for the help :)

You'll be able to learn programming during university. If you want you could start exploring programming right away to get a headstart. Since you've got plenty of time in college, I'd say start with Java or C++. They may be harder to pick up than some newer languages like JavaScript and Python, but understanding them will build a better foundation and make transition to other languages much easier.
