Summary: In terms of courses, SE has a wide and shallow aperture, it focuses on the entire Software Development Lifecycle. While CS has a narrow and deep aperture, as it focuses more on coding and computer architecture. In terms of job market, it doesn't really matter. Both are seen as synonymous by employers. So get going, and make some money. At the end of day, Software Engineers have more rishta points due to the 'Engineer' label.

Choose CS if you want to learn about computers, in depth theoretical knowledge, hard subjects but definately worth it, subjects that are offered in CS but not in SE are the following : Computer architecture and asssembly language : design and analysis of algorithms : compiler construction : Artificial Intelligence : Parallel and concurrent programmimg . All above subjects are not offered in SE degree, tough subjects but worth it. But all the subjects that are important offered in SE are also offered in CS, the SE subjects that are not offered in CS are not that much important. Chose computer science if you want to innovate in the field of computer science, or want to pursure Master or PHD and want to go in research and teaching field and have a lot of time to work hard because above mentioned subjects are really tough. Choose SE if you are not sure of you have an apptitude for computer science OR in coding or not. And then if you find interest in this field learn all the above mentioned subjects on your own ( IF YOU WANT ) every things is avaliable on internet you will not regret choosing SE in any way, but if you choose CS and does not find interest in it things become really tough for you choose wisely . Also if you want to start job after 4th or 6th semester or spend most of the time during degree on coding OR freelancing I would suggest choose SE , on the other hand if you want to spend your whole degree time on learning choose CS.

Software engineering is actually not considered engineering.PEC doesnot recognize it.This degree is recognized by NCEAC which is a council for computing. Another point to consider is that the global defination of an *engineer* refers to a person who works on tangible things(things you can physically touch) so technically bsse graduates shouldnot call themselves software engineers as their main concern is only software part of computer.They should call themselves software developers. This degree is considered as a degree of computing or IT and that is why the complete name of the degree is BS(Software engineering)(non engineering).

Not really, with my perspective and research; Engineers are people who design, construct and test structures, materials and systems while considering the limitations by practicality, regulation, safety, and cost. lets understand it by just seeing the definition of engineering, according to Merriam-Webster: "The design and manufacture of complex products." A more helpful definition comes from the American Engineers’ Council for Professional Development: "The creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation and safety to life and property." As you said globally recognized definition of an engineer refers to a person doing tangible things, is not relating at all and moreover if you see what a common google search of "Engineering" definition tells: "the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures." "the action of working artfully to bring something about." And term "Developing" means upgrading or a thing started to exist. It(Developing) is happening everywhere as well as in SE so calling SE as developer makes sense and calling him an engineer also makes sense.

If you have interest in building airplanes, maintaining them and working in close to them, probably aeronautical engineering but if you have interest in computer and building softwares so choose software engineering. Remember, After choosing aeronautical engineering you have to work on machines and engines but if you choose SE you don't have to black your hands but it will be frustrating at first. It(SE) is a kind of white collar job and SEs are earning more comparing other Engineers in the market. SEs can also work from home if needed. Check yourself, If you are ready to work in-close with machines and probably ready for doing some black hands and are not effecting your interest and you are not running for money "initially just after degree", choose Engineering major. choose Engineering major. if you are sitting most of the time on computer/laptop and play games and hopes/loves/wishes building some gaming or any other type of project in the future, moreover if you can easily teach yourself from internet and hungry for some money too "initially just after degree", SE is the best option.

I don't know people who have done their CS from IBA. Most probably because they decide to join Karachi's job market. From what i've experienced, getting experience in the industry is far more valuable that pursing education after a CS degree.... But then again... it really depends on the individual's situation. If you can tell me more details about your situation, I can give you a better answer

Ehmad Zubair Thanks again! I’m in my final year of O Levels, gonna start As next year but I’m taking Maths phys chem to be eligible for all engineering fields. What are the skills you think one should have before pursuing CS at Uni. Will I face any issues if I pursue CS without a CS background ? Regarding languages or concepts of software, frameworks etc. What should I work on in the coming 2 years, independently. I know some C++ and I want to have a go at Python and Java etc.

@@immasavagebro2845 You are in a much better position than I am back when I was in A levels. I didn't have any idea about CS. Didn't know any programming language and didn't have such information on youtube either. IMO you should start with Python because it's the right mix of power and simplicity. Try to building things with Python that you are passionate about. If you get stuck somewhere, reach out to me on Instagram :)
