Unfortunately, I think she has dementia and probably has some extended family members lurking around asking her to call for money. Pretty much elder abuse, sadly. If you noticed the more money they got, the more family members appeared.

I’m gonna take a stab in the dark and say that old friends and relatives are hitting Betty up for money. And she being type person she is is probably handing it out for every sob story she’s being told. This is a relatively poor area and the fact that people are giving them more attention now probably has Betty feeling wanted for once in her life. This is just speculation and only my opinion. I just don’t believe Mark has done wrong

After learning about the Nova interview I have zero respect for Mark. Posting a 13 year old with her nipples showing is crazy, then acting like it wasn't a big deal is even crazier. That interview highlights at the very least his incredible irresponsibility with his interviewees. Broadcast a vulnerable child's location to millions of people is wild. Sharing her social where she sells child porn is criminal. He made changed, but the video should've never been aired with her face and location. A pedophile has already seen that and has her location and enough info to find her on social media

If I were Mark I'd take the remaining money and use it to take Ray to the doctor and have his knee treated. The guy is in severe pain and despite him trying to communicate that to any and everyone noone has helped him with it. Any remaining funds should be allocated to helping Ray, Timmy and/or Lorraine or enriching their lives. While I feel for Betty, she has basically sacrificed her entire life caring for them, other members of the family clearly persuade her to give them the funds leaving the most vulnerable Whitakers with basically none of it.

@@tonyp1376 tbh, this is mostly Mark's fault. Mark had good intentions, but executed this terribly. Mark has so much experience with addicts and mentally ill, yet I cannot wrap my head around why he would create a go-fund-me, that was set up to just hand cash to the Whittakers. A family that CLEARLY does not have the mental skill or ability to manage money or their lives. Yet he starts handing them thousands of dollars? The Whittakers, Betty, Larry could have easily been killed over this money. Its clear as day Betty has been manipulated to use Mark as a piggy bank for her families drug habits. If Mark properly set up a foundation to have this money used ONLY on the Whittakers necessities(like medical care, housing, food, etc,), none of this would be happening. Its just shocking to me Mark was handing Betty all of this money.

Yes so much this but also including the dogs. The recent video of Mark showing up to the property unannounced to see if Larry was alive when his death was faked to get more money broke my heart seeing Ray and Timmy. They're at the mercy of everyone else. They were so excited to see Mark and obviously love the time he spends interacting with them. It's so unfair they're forced to go without because of the greed of others. They're also the one's most exploited by scumbags like Tyler when Mark genuinely cares and tries to protect them. They deserve the best care which all the money that was given could've paid for. Occupational therapy, psychiatry, medical care, etc. and vehicle/fuel costs could've easily been taken care of. If that Tyler dude genuinely cared he would've taken the steps make sure Timmy and Ray were cared for. Seeing people suffer is hard enough but to see people suffer when there's means to make sure they don't have to is heartbreaking.

One of the families I worked with a local church decided to give them some help and it seemed that the more they helped the poorer the family got. It finally got to the point that I had to ask the church to limit their help to food and clothing donations because the family was spending nearly all the money on cigarettes and lottery tickets. The organization I worked for had people that would go in and help clean house for them. Those employees brought me 2 big garbage bags full of lottery tickets that had been bought in a month time. There was well north of $10,000 scratch offs in those bags. It was like they where chasing the rush of having a lot of money. That a feeling they had never known till the church got involved.

My sister told me about your channel yesterday evening. I started watching throughout the night and into the morning hours to finish all of the videos. I was hooked on this family and the story you were telling. Half way through the videos, I thought when I wake up tomorrow, I will send money to the GoFundMe account. I noticed about 3/4 of viewing the videos, that some family members would (passive-aggresively) bring up needing money. However, I still wanted to help. After finishing all of the videos, I was heartbroken that your generosity (and the donors) turned out NOT to be appreciated. I was floored with the video of BJ confessing to outright lying about the death of her father to get drug money. My personal belief is that there were only 3 people that had no part in the lie (Lorraine, Timothy, and Ray). I then watched Tyler's video of the family and the way he questioned your morals. This video made me disgusted. The song, "Dirty Money" popped into my head after watching Tyler's video. He was trying to do a sensational video to get more viewers to his channel. A professional "reporter" should look at ALL facts before beginning a story. It also struck me odd, that you never once received a thank you for all you were doing with the people that could verbalize that sentiment. However, I hope you firmly know in your heart that Timothy and Ray were appreciative of what you were doing for their family by the way they always greeted you. I also believe you played a big part in getting the poor dog help for his leg that caused the amputation. It was never in the videos, but I believe you were the main force in getting that poor dog help. As you can probably tell by my long rant, this story will sit in my brain for a long time and I will need to find a local outlet to help others in need. I am not even a little bit wealthy, but am thankful for everything that I have, and hope others to have help when needed. I will start in my own community. You are a kind and caring man, and I hope you many blessings in the future.

Seems like the Whitakers needed someone like a court appointed guardian to watch over their finances and donations, they don't have the capacity to handle money, let alone that much money. I'll bet family members came out of the woodwork with their hands out and took money from them. You tried to do a good thing Mark but the Whitakers have lived the way they do for many years and generations in filth and poverty, and without someone teaching them how to keep their house clean, a new house will look like the current one does in no time. Everyday tasks that require planning, organization, or problem-solving can be more challenging for those with low IQs. This includes tasks like managing finances, cooking, social skills and cues.

This money is coming from people who genuinely want to do good for them - and then you have a situation like this that completely torpedoes people's faith in humanity and changes the perspective of a family facing hard times who need help to a family that is simply taking advantage of people's good faith and will - even to the extent of lying and manipulating to get even more than they already have. This is an unfortunate outcome and truly heartbreaking, but it needs to stop - at least from the angle of asking others to help fund a goal that's never going to be realized. Thank you though, Mark. EXACTLY, re: "...isn't expensive"! Mark did a couple of videos on the social problems of the area (remember the guy on the side of the road with the motorcycle?), in particular the rampant crack, *meth, and benzos - use? Remember the videos of taking them to eat fast food and the (huge) shopping at Walmart? Everybody "and their brother" recognized them! There are always people taking advantage -- I wouldn't be surprised if either of the populations I just referred-to didn't see the Whittakers as a potential "next fix" or a money pot! For that reason (and that they couldn't conceptualize such ammounts), there should have been some system of checks + balances, like a money mgr. Somebody has been draining that money ($3,000, $4,000, $4,000, $3,000,...)!

I'm from West Virginia (I left the state over a decade ago but still visit my family somewhat regularly). I knew people that lived (and still live) like the Whitakers. I've tried helping in the past and kind of went through the same thing as you (albeit not publicly on social media). The more I helped, the more they demanded my help. It got to the point that I couldn't afford to help anymore and their attitude and treatment toward me changed dramatically. The sad truth is that many people in these financial situations can't be helped because it doesn't matter what you do, it will be all for naught in the end. I appreciate your channel and videos and the exposure you gave to the living conditions and poverty level of many people in West Virginia. I don't blame you for shutting down the gofundme, it was inevitable that it would happen eventually. Thank you for your channel and videos and I will continue to watch your work. You are exactly right about how people's attitudes change once you can no longer help them. It's like they think they're entitled to your money now and you become the enemy for refusing. It makes me sad to look around the Whittakers' home in Tyler's video and see how much filth and garbage is being hoarded around the place. To me that's indicative of where their mentality is at. You don't have to live like a slob just because you're impoverished. When you're a hoarder, you've got deep seated issues that aren't going to go away with receiving handouts.
@Naejakire3
@Naejakire3 8 ай бұрын
Poverty is traumatic and there's a desperation that is hard for a lot of people to understand. Desperation makes you do fucked up things to get your needs met. This is why we so often seen a lack of appreciation and the attitude changes once the helping stops. It sucks because it often ends up with the person who helped feeling like it bit them in the ass, like they're the bad guy for helping because they couldn't help forever. When I was in poverty, I didn't have that attitude but I definitely was more OK with doing things I wouldn't usually do because of the desperation. Now that I'm not and make good money, I don't feel that desperation so there's a lot of things I won't do that I would have before.

@@TheBlackisbeautifull I kinda thought several Episodes ago, that they were taking advantage of him. And they don't really try to "clean up" or improve much. They live nasty and trashy. You don't have to live poor and TRASHY at the same time. Everyone can get soap and water.

This is the first time I’ve ever watched your channel (and I’m a Tyler Olivera fan), but I’m really happy you explained this video with more context. It’s ridiculous how people like him would lie about something this touchy, especially when you’re doing more work for people besides this family specifically. I hope he fixes the situation and owns up to his stupidity, and just donates all the money he’s generated from his gofundme to yours, and makes a public promotion for your work. It’s insane how people want to bring people down with little evidence presented at all to make themselves look better in some cases. Hope the best for you.

If you watch Marks videos where he takes the Whittakers shopping he HAS ALWAYS told them to buy whatever they want. He also has been accommodating to their needs.

Don’t know what is expected when you put up a gofundme for a new house and you have raised enough for a new house… and there’s no new house. It not a shitty thing to do to question this. Clearly it wasn’t transparent enough what the donated money was being used for and was quite misleading. There wasn’t ill intentions on either side. They just wanted the best for the family.

Mark, I’m so sorry this is happening. I never once doubted your integrity or intentions. I did wonder when it was going to come to this situation. You’re making the right choice by walking away. It seems like it never fails when one starts with a helpful and generous idea, and then it gets tainted by other people ( opportunists, haters, egocentric wannabes & unfortunately sometimes those who you are actually helping ). I’ve watched other people try to rip off your style in what you do and how you do it. I’m certain you’ve experienced that in the advertising industry. Like you said, your true fans, though we don’t know you personally, know you’re the real deal. You, your ideas, interviews and the people you reach have always been authentic. I have yet to see anybody else do what you do with the respect, INTELLIGENCE and integrity that you have & give so generously. You are a shaker and people are always going to want to steal your Stardust.

When Betty said she thought the money was coming out of Marks account I realized that she doesn't know the difference between $10 and $1000. I fear that people surrounding them have basically stolen the money just by asking them to get it for them. I agree with ending the GFM. They have survived this long they will be none the worse. I do agree with the person who said that Betty probably thought Tyler was delivering groceries for Paige.
