How could anyone think that this test is abusive or a misuse of a tool? SOG states that this knife can "make short work of any task" and this is the only reference to the knifes intended purpose. But let's assume it's a combat knife, if it can't handle battoning it can't stand up to combat, a parry against this with a stick is going to break it as will a thousand other things that could occur during combat. And yeah it's a cheap knife but at what price point exactly then does it become UNacceptable for a product to fail during routine use? $20? $50? $200? $500? Cheap to whom? Me? You? Bill Gates? One last thing, to everyone who keeps saying things like "get an axe" I would respond with "get a dictionary" and look up the words "test" and "review" and try really, really hard to figure out what your watching.

i agree with you on your point .Sometimes you may have put a knife under stress in a survival situation any good quality knife should be able to take the brunt of it and still remain intact.

SOG also stated this when they sold them: "Now we have developed along with military consultants an even more economical choice with the Fixation series." If you're dumb enough to buy an knife with economical in the description, I don't think SOG is the one to blame here.

I do agree that all companies make s#itty knives and good ones, my whole thing is how good the "good" ones are for the money you'd pay for them. The seal pup and tigershark are good knives, but there are guys on ebay that sell comparable if not better knives that they made in their basement for less.
@ShockNAwww9 жыл бұрын
***** as I said, elite is a good knife, but for about the same money, I can get a esee and know that I can do anything with it. Also SP 50 is in the same price range, has an xtra 4.5 inches of blade and will pry a door open if u need it to. The seal pup would be a good knife to have as a small backup in case ur hands are too small to whittle effectively with a real bushcraft knife. Its meant for small tasks, a tactical knife : rope cutting, the casual silent stab in the neck, minor stuff. It is a b!tch to baton a serious piece of wood with a 4 in blade. Even more of a bitch to get a good grip on a pup knife for drawing wood to make a self bow. I've tried it, its why my carry is now a Junglas, RTAK 2 or an SP51 (yes the bigger one, I like real estate dont judge). The side blade is a CS trailmaster vg1 (stainless because I dont use a side blade for main tasks) which hold up just great to any abuse if need arises including gouging oak without loosing the tip. Got it on amazon a few years back for $75 haven't managed to break it since.

I'm wondering if the spot welds are what weakened the tang. They go through a lot of trouble to heat treat the blade then apply welding heat to the tang to weld the guard on? Hello SOG? On a knife tang that thin I can't see it not weakening the metal. Had to have totally negated the heat treatment. (and since you can see the welds you know they happened after the blade was formed and coated) I'd rather have a guard that rattled than one that's welded to the tang.

Just about every SOG stress test I've seen results in catastrophic failure, no matter what model. Never go with "tacti-cool" knives, because they belong in the comic book ads next to sea monkeys and "x-ray" glasses. For nearly the same price, you can go with the proven KA-BAR 1211, or, if you want to spend some money, the KA-BAR 1281 D2 (tool steel) Extreme Fighting/Utility Knife, both are USA made, the 1211 is 1095 CroVan steel, and that 1281's D2 blade is freaking crazy tough (just for shits and giggles, I used it to split a stone about the size of a football, and it pulverized that stone). Of course, for bushcraft, the KA-BAR Becker BK9 is crazy good if you want to go big. Though I get flack for this, the Gerber Bear Grylls Sheath Knife (folding version of their Ultimate Survival Knife) is actually pretty damned impressive for that low $15-$30 (depending where you buy) price tag, and I'd carry it for survival situations.
@Gottaculat8 жыл бұрын
***** I'm not familiar with that one. SOG must be doing something right if people are buying their knives for more than props for CoD Cosplay. You never know; sometimes you come across that ironically rare cheap knife that is actually of excellent craftsmanship. Sorta like a folding knife by Workzone Hand Tools I picked up for $3 on the discount rack. I bought it to practice my blade sharpening skills (best to practice on cheap knives before sharpening knives worth over $100, am I right?), and wouldn't you know it, after 2 hours of meticulous edge honing, this thing has blown through my folding knife stress test. I easily sliced horribly thin (rips if even slightly dull) notebook paper, and shaved some arm hair effortlessly, even with a 20 degree angle. I then chipped through a 1" thick dead branch, whittled a twig into feather curls (no serrations on the knife), then whittled a small figurine from a block of wood, even scraping the edge in reverse to act like pseudo sandpaper to give the figurine a smooth finish. After all of that I could still consistently slice that thin paper, and shave some hair off (though not quite as effortlessly). Who'd think a $3 knife (which actually looks really great, polished wood grip and all) would actually be worthy of everyday carry? My point? There must be some SOG out there I haven't heard of yet that can win my trust to be EDC certified by my standards, lol! I wonder which one it is, though? I'm still not a fan of the tacti-cool knives, though, even if it's a great knife. I don't know... If I see "tactical" or "zombie" in the name of a knife, I get totally skeptical, 'cause I just picture marketing saying, "just call it that, and the CoD and CS:GO kiddies will buy it thinking it's not our reject steel that even the Chinese won't buy off of us. After all, they aren't going to tell their mommies they bought a knife and got swindled!" - then the group laughs. Yes, I'm sure that's not how it actually goes down (at least, I hope not), but that's the demographic I imagine would be the targeted, 'cause who ever heard of a millennial actually researching outside of school work? That would require READING!!! **Gasp!** :o Anyway, that became a rant, but whatever; I'll stick by it.
@Gottaculat8 жыл бұрын
***** Oh, don't get me wrong, I occasionally buy a cheap knife to fill a low impact task, or as a spare I can keep in a drawer, should I feel too lazy/tired to bother with the other knives. I'm just picky about which knifes I'll actually rely on in an emergency. Actually, one such cheap knife is my folding credit card knife that's the same dimensions as a credit card (hence the name). Sometimes I have to be discreet, but still want a blade handy, and it's virtually undetectable short of a thorough search or metal detector. People get irrationally weird around those of us who open-carry a defensive combat/utility/hunting knife, so if you know you're entering a den of irrational folk, it's best to go discreet, and cheap (should you end up getting it confiscated for whatever no-doubt lame reason). Not that that's happened to me, but as a former member of the BSA, "BE PREPARED" still rings clearly in my head. And I admit it, I bought a couple of cheap, totally impractical blades (even with lame names) just purely for their aesthetics, with the only intent being for display/conversation pieces in my home.

There are a forum of people who would say you deserve this failure, a knife is not designed to baton wood of any kind, I am not one of those people. I can't imagine how many knife manufacturers have replaced broken blades doing exactly what you're doing here. However, I've batoned wood ten times that size with only two failures, Gerber Bear Grills Ultimate knives (made in China) ring a bell sir. All my Beckers, Ontario's and Esee's have passed with flying colors. I'm sorry for your loss, and I would send it back to China and expect a full refund for my hard earned money. I swear you see more vids and pics of broken sogs than any other brand. My guess is that to save money they hardened the whole blade (big batch). And a hardened tang can't handle the stress. Its way cheaper to toss these in the oven in big batches than to heat treat them properly.
@davidsmi10109 жыл бұрын
I wonder if that is the result of them hardening the blade after sharpening and not heating the handle as well. Thus leaving it brittle.

If anybody is going to use a knife as a utility knife get some that are made of tempered T10 or 1095 carbon steel, to my own experience the best working steel there is period.
