SoHyang is simply amazing. She has a similar issue to Mariah though, where she's just underrated. Sohyang can make an F#5 seem as easy as a C5; so people don't really get amazed with SoHyang's mid and upper-range belts as much as they should, even though a lot of today's female singers have difficulty singing in even the low end of the 5th octave. It sucks, but her technique is still amazing and she always delivers quality vocals in every performance. If only there were more people that knew about and appreciated her. :\

***** Mariah has never been known for her belts by many people, which to me is kinda sad. Even in songs like Emotions where she belted in the 5th octave like a maniac, people kinda brushed off those seamlessly easy belts and focused solely on the whistles. That's what I mean by underrated. Back in the day, and still today, some people only see her as a whistler, not a belter; despite the fact that she was one of the best belters of the '90s by far.
@Bluehime
@Bluehime 10 жыл бұрын
imsnowbored You are so right! Mariah is my favorite singers of all time and even though she is highly praised for her vocals, it's mainly her whistles that get the attention. Her albums up to Butterfly show how much depth and power she had in her voice. However, I think it's because of other singers during the 90s like Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, who had stronger/louder belts, were known for that and Mariah with whistles....
@gustionair
@gustionair 9 жыл бұрын
Bluehime well that's obviously because of fach not technique. Mariah is a light lyric and you are comparing her to a Spinto and a Lyric-spinto.

I'm not an expert but from what I know, these two singers uses a classical technique which is not used many pop singers. Both of them lower their larynx to make their belts sounds fuller, deeper and resonant. Many pop singers raises their larynx to create bright and thin sound.

I like how heavily this video focuses a lot in detail on just the musicality side of her voice, as opposed to idol singers in K-pop, Sohyang is of such advanced vocal skills that it just makes you be able to say so much more about her, adding the musicality to it beyond just the technical side of her singing. This video didn't talk as much about the technique in itself, it just stated what was right, how good she is. Since it's not an actual analysis, her weakness, aka her lower range wasn't really brought up. Sohyang could easily be on par with many of the legendary divas if it weren't for her low notes. >_< She's like just so close though.
@xlonestar
@xlonestar 9 жыл бұрын
so upon the heavily comparison between So Hyang, Mariah Carey (on her prime) and Regine Velasquez, as a vocal analyst, who do you think won? Just there vocals, not based on their popularity, awards, fan bases and etc. I hope you reply asap thanks :)
@KitsuneMale
@KitsuneMale 9 жыл бұрын
Debbie Manantan Oh why, hello there. I never take anything related into popularity, awards nor fanbases. ^ ^ Mariah Carey, in studio, was very technical and very on point, now I am not familiar enough with her years of live performing to be sure she was always impeccable. I'd give Sohyang and Mariah the same kind of level of skill, in their primes. As for Regine, she was never nearly as technically skilled as them. She always strained her higher notes, her lower notes lacked support and projection, her head voice lacked connection, she'd often be off pitch or flat when trying to belt higher than she should. Regine is far from a bad vocalist, but she was never on the same tier as those two. If Sohyang can be resonant and supported from G#3 ~ C6 and bring her head voice up to F6 with support and resonance, not to mention agility, control of dynamics, musicality and stamina, Mariah Carey had at least D3/Eb3/E3 ~ A5 with head voice perhaps up to Eb6? Connection throughout her registers, resonance, support, musicality and agility, ..well Regine at her prime had A3 ~ C#5/D5 at most, without a connected head voice. Now, that's pretty nice, but it's not nearly as complete as the other two, given that all three are Sopranos, Mariah had resonance from as low as she needed to and as high as her range could go, same for Sohyang. Regine had more than a couple of notes above D5 where she'd strain, let her larynx go high and sound unsupported, not to mention low notes and everything else.Again Regine was never bad or technically incompetent, she was never at their level though. A vocalist who is much closer to their level is someone like Jonalyn Viray, she represents the Philippines better in technical terms, imho. Sorry I could not answer any earlier.
@xlonestar
@xlonestar 9 жыл бұрын
Oh sorry, I didn't mean to offend you.... you gave a quick reply dont worry. :) She even had problem last year bc of straining too much. Just to inform tho, there's one far much better than Jonalyn Viray, it's Morissette Amon. But can I ask again if u can compare these two? (Viray and Amon) It's just that Amon can whistle easily while Viray can whistle but it I think it's more of a head tone than a whistle but when it comes to belting, I can never notice if she strains when belting high notes. Sorry for asking a non kpop related question.
@KitsuneMale
@KitsuneMale 9 жыл бұрын
Debbie Manantan Oh no you didn't offend me at all lol I am not familiar with Morissette Amon, so I don't have an opinion with her at all. Oh yes whistle maybe, Jonalyn's whistles are not good... but her mixing is really really good and so is her head voice, from what I remember. It's okay, I don't mind. ^ ^

Learning about Sohyang's existence, and having a playlist of all of her songs and performances played on repeat, makes it sooo sooo hard for me to listen to other artists. She's the only Korean singer I ever listen to. It even makes it hard for me to open a video of a trending artist with hundred millions of views. I'd prefer Sohyang's underrated slayages rather than those overly rated ones. I've never been this addicted to a singer. Sohyang, what did you do to me? You slayed my whole life! Can we please stop comparing SoHyang, Mariah, and Whitney Houston!! They are all amazing vocalist in this world filled of talentless famous singers! They all have their own uniqueness that makes them stand far above others. God gave us all different voices. We cant compare them. Just enjoy their beautiful voices. Its a shame people think voices like park boms are legendary or unique or are great singers. They clearly lack the essence of actual talent.
@Trick6666
@Trick6666 9 жыл бұрын
Mariah and Whitney were amazing vocalists, even in their primes they could not belt, or go with their head voice as high as Sohyang, and that doesn't mean she's a better vocalist, just better at these feats.
@lissandrafreljord7913
@lissandrafreljord7913 9 жыл бұрын
Music and Dragon 음악과 드래곤 Yep! Its the truth. Sohyang can belt in a more chest dominant voice much higher than both Whitney and YES, even Mariah (Mariah still possesses the larger vocal range with her whistle notes and lower notes). In fact Jennifer Hudson and Patti Labelle can belt much higher than MC too. However, that doesn't mean that they are better vocalists. Vocal capabilities are limited by the anatomical structure of one's vocal cords. Nevertheless, it is how one develops his/her technique in perfecting his/her vocal abilities that makes one a great vocalist. Sohyang just happen to have both: a God-given talent, and a master of her own voice.

She certainly should be considered as one of the best female singers, right with Celine, Whitney, and Mariah. I honestly think she has better control over her voice than any of those three. Mariah has a better range but that's really the only plus I can think of that she has over So Hyang.

Well mariah's voice isn't what it used to be. She's not really taking care of it like she should. I feel like her supported range has gotten smaller.

Whistle register isn't really part of ones range.
@razrv3lc
@razrv3lc 8 жыл бұрын
It is when it's under control and supported, like Mariah's. If it's like a lot of singers who don't have a whistle tone range but can just sing one random whistle tone note, then it's not part of their range.

Technically , the whistle register can't be supported , it's a disconnected register. But it can , for sure ,be strain-free.

I adore her as a person. She has released some pop songs though (eg. Mermaid, etc.) and they charted, but basically she sings whatever she wants to. She doesn't want big companies like SM to force her to become one of those K-Pop idols who only sing silly songs, so she rejected all of them while millions of people in Korea who seek fame and fortune would do anything to get the contract. But for SoHyang, it is not worth sacrificing artistry and honesty for money and higher record sales.

Virtuoso vocalist. So glad to have found her. It's great to have a contemporary singer on par with some of the greats of the past. If you guys like high register belting I urge you to check out Diane Schuur's work from the late 80's (American Jazz Singer). Another incredibly musical singer who never fails to send chills down my spine is Gal Costa (Brazil). in her prime from the late 60's - 90's , check out her work with Antonio Carlos Jobim in 1987 live in LA. Not as extreme a range but a voice so clear and musical that's often compared to a horn.

Exactly! When I first heard this song I thought for sure that it was a duet...the second stanza simply frightened me when I found out it was all her. She wears such a vocally dark and smoky cloak in this performance, and I don't know how she can easily turn on the grit and the rasp...simply amazing! It's rare when a vocalist can excel in almost every genre. There are many classically trained opera singers that have such amazing technique yet suck for some reason when they dabble in pop or rock.

Nowhere in the video did I compare them. SoHyang has only a high voice? (1) 5:14 diminuendo (gradual decrease in volume) on an Eb5 belt, (2) 8:01-8:09 vocal control to belt out many F#5s softly instead of just giving a "full blast" every time, (3) 1:22 Breath control to sustain C6 for 10 seconds in full head voice. So before you claim that she only has a high voice again, please make sure that your fave can do those things.

When a soprano develop her voice at it's stronger points instead of trying to sing like a mezzo or a contralto, the result is magical. Along with a natural breathe control, some of her belts here are a bit tense, in the clips her voice was lighter(maybe she was younger,head not so effortless as well), in others her head was float-ish.

Can I get a list of all the songs on this please? She has just became my favourite Asian singer, I honestly like her more than Charice and the rest. After listening to her version of fate especially, and lean on me, I was hooked for good. This woman has a natural and beautiful talent and it's so sad to see people like her so underrated while so many talentless people become famous in a day. Her technique is magical and I won't compare her to Whitney or Mariah because she's her own person and hearing her sing actually leaves me breathless, I can't imagine what she would be like live.

So Hyang is undoubtedly better than Christina Aguilera (not even worth a comparison), but there's no point in comparing her to Whitney. They're both musicians who have developed their instruments as best as they could and fully understand how to use them responsibly. Very few people are on their technical level and since they both are practically masters it's not even worth deciding who's better. Once you've made it, you've made it.

+Allan Han Well Christina is by far the more talented one if you talk about god-given (I hate that word, it's just genes) talent but SoHyang has the better technique, you are right. I would still want you to see Christina's coaching at the voice. She actually shows that she has a great technique but never uses it. So you CAN compare them but SoHyang's technique is better :)
