Organization: Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
Title: Soil Health Gardening
The presentation focuses on principles of Soil Health, with real examples of how to adopt each principle.
Kent Vlieger has been the State Soil Health Specialist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in South Dakota since 2018. Prior to his current position as Soil Health Specialist, he spent the first 17 years of his career working in field offices from the Canadian border in North Dakota to his current location in Huron, SD. He feels fortunate to have worked with and learned from numerous soil health focused producers, conservation district boards and agency personnel. Kent’s favorite part of his job is working one on one with producers and being part of the Cain Creek and Dale Demonstration Farms’ management team. Kent is a graduate of SDSU with a bachelor of Science in Agriculture.
In his free time he enjoys his wife and kids; and finds some free time to garden, and hunt pheasants and deer.
More information about our partnership with NRCS:
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) have formed a partnership to build the capacity of local partners’ knowledge to develop and implement effective strategies in supporting producers in the building of a sustainable local food system. The partnership will incorporate conservation and wise use and management of natural resources that are sustainable both for producers and the environment.
