Dr Jennifer Rowntree, Associate Professor in Ecological Genetics, outlines the critical role that in-field soil health research and agri-tech can play in enabling farmers to transition to more resilient food systems with reduced environmental impact. With many of our agricultural soils currently facing challenges from erosion, compaction and contamination, a comprehensive soil assessment programme could ensure future food security and protect biodiversity and ecosystem services. Research at the Centre of Research excellence in Intelligent and Sustainable Productive Systems aims to develop practical solutions for healthier soils and a secure food supply.
