How long does it take dolomite lime to work? Is it similar to elemental sulfur where it’s a biological process?

Dolomitic works much better for low ph soils than bulk agricultural lime,I've seen the difference, plus more trace minerals.

We use dolomitic lime on our ball diamonds. Is this the same stuff?

All of my local “big box” retailers carry a powdered lime that comes in a plastic bag and is always wet and caked together. Are they not storing it improperly or is it supposed to be that way? It’s impossible to spread with something like a drop spreader so I always use the granules.

Try your local USDA or State Farm service for soil testing. They can help you out. It’s easy.

What if my Calcium (optimal) and Magnesium (high), but Ph is low? What should I do for that?

I think it would depend on what your land-use intent and goals are, but for most types of agricultural production it would still be important to add lime according to your soil test recommendations. This will ensure that the soil pH is in a range that allows nutrients to be available to crops or forages. If your Magnesium is high, it may be best to use calcific lime vs. dolomitic lime since calcific lime typically contains less Magnesium. In many of the soil tests we see here in KY, calcium is extremely high due to the parent materials from which KY soils are derived (limestone). It is still best practice in most cases to add lime to adjust pH if called for in a soil test if planning agriculture production or gardening.
