why matric and osmotic tension are negative... if tension always positive

There are no such terms like matric and osmotic tension. Yes, definitely osmotic pressure is there which acts like osmotic tension. Osmotic pressure is always positive and osmotic potential is always negative like soil water tension and soil water potential, respectively. Similarly matric potential is always negative. But it is under unsaturated soil. Under saturated soil matric potential is called pressure potential or more preferably hydrostatic pressure which is positive. Hope u understand this.
