Yes, Jessye Norman/Mazur - is 5 min. slower...but I cannot decide if I go for that majestic recording...or madame Isokoski´s wonderful singin´ in a "fresher" tempo!?

Strauss was not proscriptive about how his works should be interpreted or performed. When asked about it, he was known to reply "Wie sie wollen." As such, some latitude is perfectly all right.

The tempo is good and is the tempo of Flagstad in the world premiere; I agree that Janowitz is very,very good and so are many others. I wouldn’t trade Jessie Norman for the world but I don’t think I can hear anyone else without her chops and her unmatchable voice. Among very many excellent performances, it’s a matter of taste isn’t it? My personal faves are Norman and Isokoski,

I meant at Norman’s tempo; she couldn’t carry it off, but I don’t think anyone else could do it that slow and still be so magnificent.
