It is easy to get lost in Froberger. A stream of conflicting crunchy note clusters, rhytmic and harmonic clashes, fanlike compositional writing that unfolds and folds back melodic configurations and all that in unstable rhythmic structures... It is all there in Sokolov's rendition that is supremely coherent, lyrically logical and emotionally warm without artifice. He really get the convoluted nature of this music that is dense and at times foreboding. And yet he reaches to the heart of it - a tortured yet sweet searching spirit of its author. Sokolov really listens and seem to understand all these formal contradictions as unity of specific kind. From that point of view his sound and rhythm calibrations for performance sake makes supreme sense because he brings out that deeply hidden lyrical undertow. Froberger in his hands appears not as maddening mannerist but a complex innovative artist. That is a very typical of Sokolov to put composer's thought first and do the justice to the chosen musical material by applying all the performer's artistic resources. Sokolov's dedication to music is unnerving at times - it is so complete. That is why we have this marvel of performance...

This performance is such a feat of sustained subtle dexterity that anybody in doubt of who is the foremost living pianist should not hesitate to give this a try.

I happen to have an harpsichord (beside a piano), and this great pianist is the only one that can elavate the Baroque music and this piece above the instrument it was composed to to.

JOHANN JAKOB FROBERGER {STUTTGART 1616-1667 HERICOURT} TOCCATA, CANZON, FANTASIA RICERCARE.

what kind of piano is he playing?
@nbharakey Жыл бұрын
Almost all of his recording are from live recitals so the piano is probably the standard Steinway D. What is special is that before each performance he takes time to understand what the piano is capable of doing and then adapts his playing. So you may listen to two concerts which are only days apart but on different pianos in different venues, and the performance may differ significantly.
