It was some months ago, there was unrest in my home Darjeeling, internet had been shut down for months, i was flipping through news channels to keep abreast and i stumbled upon Katzenjammer on DW News Baloise Session. At first i thought they were new spice girls or something but soon my ears told another tale. These were serious musicians. All of them played multiple instruments and could sing and make it look as easy as breathing. The music was like nothing i heard before; folksy, bluesy, Beatlesque, rock n roll, opera, psychedelic, a kaleidoscope of styles, a truly unique blend. All the songs were great especially Bad Girl, Lady Grey, Hey Oh but my favorite was "Shine Like Neon Rays." By the time Sol finished singing it my eyes were brimming over, I was overwhelmed. I was blown by their music, energy and presence. Alone at home i felt like i had just been at a great concert like Woodstock or Deep Purple's Last Concert in Tokyo etc.. To me Katzenjammer are the female equivalent of the Beatles and Sol is its Lennon, its sad you had to leave... Hoping to hear more great music from you Sol, until then i'll keep seeing you "Shine Like Neon Rays : )

I interpreted them as a message that things aren't how you think they are and we live inside of a "safety bubble". "Listen up in euphoria", euphoria meaning a false sense of pleasure created artificially (or something like that) and then saying "We're falling" (things not going so well). What is this euphoria? "We're falling" implies that the singer is in the euphoria and "Wake me up from America" implies that the singer is also in America, therefore euphoria = America. Now, what does this really mean? There are many ways to interpret this but I think it means we all think we're strong (I mean needless to say America is a pretty influential and strong country) but in reality not so much ("we're falling"). There is constant referencing to high standards. "Fuck me up just for feeling down" meaning you treat someone unfairly just because you yourself are having a bad day. "Climb on top of a falling star" We're not talking about literal America here, we're talking about being too privileged, having too high standards and living a wealthy life. Being in a state of too much luxury. "We're all in our *own* America" supports this. We all live in a first world country judging by the fact that we get to experience the internet and listen to amazing music like this one. To summarize I think the fundamental message of the song is that we're enjoying wealthy lives while at the same time there are starving people in underdeveloped countries and we should enjoy the lives we have, lower our standards, not complain about our daily "first world problems" like spilling a coffee or something. We should be ready to accept the fact that we'll go downhill sometimes and that's okay, especially when there are people out there doing much worse. We should treat our wealthy lives with respect because not everyone has it like this. I think another thing the songwriter was going for was "don't get too greedy". If you're too confident you'll succeed (euphoria) it'll hurt worse if you fail ("listen up in euphoria, we're going down") and "we all live in our own America" could mean that we all think of ourselves differently than others think about us. We have high egos and think we're better than we really are. The flashing filters could symbolize the made-up world that we're creating. The world of over-confidence. I think it's a beautiful song. Keep in mind that this is just my interpretation of it and probably isn't what the songwriter was going for. I just felt like sharing my perspective. frank perry Hi! I sped down the vocal track to 42 bpm, drove 10 km per hour and mimed to the extremely slow voice, sped up the film 470 percent and made it lip sync! No danger involved
