I’m writing this in my bed, face puffy and pillows soaked in tears. I lost my sweet, sweet boy yesterday around 5:30 in the morning. He was meant to go out for an appointment next week, but he didn’t make it. My parents and I are absolutely devastated, and I know we will be for a while. I usually don’t comment on videos, but I just wanted to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I just know you saved a lot lives and kept from a lot of heart break these past few years just by posting this. I’m genuinely so happy to know that Sol pushed through. Thank you thank you thank you. And to those who have lost their pals, I’m right here with you. Hang in there, y’all! I just know your dog means the world to you as Coco did to me. Update 04/27/22: It’s been one year since Coco passed. Time really flew by but I’ve missed him every single day. When I think of where I was a year ago today, I think about how cold and heavy everything felt. I remember so many tiny details, like what lesson I was learning as I cried during physics lecture on Zoom or what I was wearing when I found out. Other details are nothing short of fuzzy. Today was a beautiful, sunny day with a cool breeze. A good day. I thought about my boy fondly throughout. While it still pains me, I feel a whole lot better now. Funny how much can change and how much stays the same in the span of a year. I still think about this video and wonder how many people were affected like I was. How many were prompted to go to that vet appointment, how many pets saved. I’m really grateful for this upload and the awareness it raises. If you’re reading this with a broken heart, I’m rooting for you! It’ll take time, but just know your friend loved you as much as you loved them. And thank you for the kindness in the replies. Wishing everyone love. ❤️

Sadly the lack of knowledge is the demise of many, "IF ONLY WE KNEW" is said a lot, that's why I learned from people's mistakes before me and research as much as I can for the day I might need it. Hopefully if you're brave enough to have another you read up on these things to recognize signs/symptoms and get the necessary treatment. Seems like there's so many people in the comments that had bad experiences from the lack of knowledge and/or funds to get their pets treated smh. Damn this sucks.

Advice for all pet owner, if your dog starts to breathe like this- take them to the vet/ER immediately. Our 16 year old toy poodle had a history of a heart murmur and the cardiologist decided he didn’t need anything but to monitor him. Exactly one year later, we were in the ER! My poodle was breathing like this and it was our mistake to take him to our regular vet. He needed critical interventions, luckily my fiancé was home and rushed him to the ER. He had a two night stay in the Oxygen tank and bunch of medications including heart, lung and antibiotics. It was the scariest few days cause we were told to be on stand by in the event things went south. My fiancé and I couldn’t sleep because we got a pretty grim prognosis, even had to sign a DNR. We considered euthanasia but we knew we had to do everything we could but ultimately it was up to our pup to fight through it. 2.5 days later, he was home but we are still on edge and making advice calls to the ER and his cardiologist. He’s getting strong every day, and getting his energy and appetite back. Our little trooper came home!

@@peterhernandez7817 no we had no insurance. We are fortunate to have the ability to pay for the costs. I wish we would have had insurance but he was healthy all his life except the last year of his life. We paid $10000+ with all the ER visits, follow ups, blood work, X-rays, echos. It was a lot. @@izza6436 I have a toy poodle who is 16 years old. I was told that he had a collapsed trachea several years ago and that there was nothing I could do about it. At 14 the vet told me he no longer needed any shots because he was too old and with a heart murmur, he didn't need the extra stress. I went home and didn't take him to the vet for two years because I didn't think I needed to. His trachea coughing got worse. He was coughing lots at night and upon getting up from naps during the day. It was so much that I almost had him put down because I didn't think there was anything that could be done. I wish I had taken him to the vet sooner and a different one instead of the one who told me there was nothing that could be done for it. He just started taking Benazepril and Lasix. It has helped him overnight! He can breathe and sleep through the night and so can I now! He was also diagnosed with low thyroid and a utility infection. I had no idea my little boy was so sick and I thought it was only a collapsed trachea. This new vet took X-rays and it shows that his trachea isn't even collapsed much! I was so wrong and feel so bad. Please get your dog to a vet before it is too late. Our dogs cannot talk to tell us what's wrong. They depend on us for everything and give us so much love!

@@izza6436 So sorry for your loss. I read your story, and I just loss my dog to this same thing. Or, I think that is what happened. So, can you tell me the amount of time from the first event (say date-ish of the initial ER visit) and your dog's age, then the date/time-period of passing and age. It's hard to get that from your story. Why I ask? Our dog had some weird event (a physical collaspe) last Tuesday and got better immediately after it (appeared like a seizure). Then, this week on Tuesday maybe, she had a more serious collapse and was unable to regain her composure. So, I had tried to get her into Banfield for exams -- but no openings, and then I wanted to take her to ER, but when I got there, it was like rush-hour and five (plus) people in front of me. And, she (once again) got up and acted more normal after it. So, prior Vet said she had chronic brochittis, so I thought it was that -- since she'd had a cough last few months (say 4 or 5 months). But, anyway, I could talk forever, and I'm still grieving; or, it's just begun. We lost her on Wed (09-15-2021). So, it is so new to us. She was like a family member. I only wish I knew what it was, but I might be misdiagnosing. And, it's too late now. But, I just could not spend that much money on her, because we don't have insurance on her. Yes, we have the care-plan at Petsmart. But, I'm not sure it'd cover all the good treatment that you got. Anyway, honestly, I'm sorry for the loss of your pet, even though, it was in August of 2019. I write because your story touched me. Thanks for sharing.

I just lost my little girl last week Tuesday, I woke up Monday to her having trouble breathing. I rushed her to the vet and she had CHF and she would have to be on meds, she stayed the night at the vet. got a call in the morning they needed to do more test, they called back at noon and said if she did not improve in a few hours that we would have to put her down. I went up there and stayed with my baby girl. I could not hold her because she was in a oxygen cage The vet opened the door so i could let her know I was there , she wagged her little nubby tail.. She never improved and we had to put her down. it was the hardest thing for me to do.. But seeing her struggling to breathe was so hard too. The vet said if we didn't she would die overnight. The sad thing was she was fine the day before ( I mean she was less than a month from 12 years and slowing a little).

You have to take them to the vet right away, mine spent a day in a hyperbaric chamber. I research this and changing her diet to a low salt high protein food had helped. Also lasix and enalapril. I had since learned how to cook for my dog and dont rely on kibbles. We also changed a lot of our habits and routines. My dog is a little firecracker and she does not give up, I resolved to fight it with her until the end by informing myself. It's best to develop healthy habits for your pet early on their life.

Sol's heart event took place at the end of 2011. Sol just had his recheck at the cardiologist on Friday, he is now approximately 13. Three years later he has been off the vetmedin for one year and off the lasix for 3 years. His murmur is only slight and the cardiologist said that if he was seeing him for the first time he would probably not even put him on Enalapril. The only medication he takes for his heart is Enalapril daily. Sol is one lucky little dog. He is doing great.

It was good of you to post this video and help others. Our little dog (age 9) has degenerative valve disease. We are supposed to monitor her resting respiratory rates every night. Anything over 40 in one minute is supposed to signal CHF. Anything escalating for three days in a row (above what is deemed her normal) suggests CHF is soon to happen. This was a difficult disease to accept. We love her so much.

I wanted to add some advice / info regarding chf, if your dog has a cough with a hacking sound or has a lot of reverse sneezing, take them to the vet asap, this way you can start treatment right away, also if diagnosed with any heart issues, it's very important to change their diet to low salt and higher protein, ( if you own a breed of dog that is more prone to heart problems you should starts a low salt diet right away even before chf starts ) in later stages chf your dog might collapse suddenly or just after some exercise, it might be confused as a seizure but more commonly its a syncope fainting episode, this is due to lack of normal blood flow to the brain. When this happens try to stay calm as if you panic you might scare your dog , try to gently wake them up by talking in a soft voice and stroking them , make sure to keep you dog cool in the summer months and to only walk them when its not too hot outside , fresh water at all times is essential , please don't ignore your dogs cough , even in older dogs it is not normal for them to be coughing , if your dog is diagnosed with chf or enlarged heart they can still have a good life with proper medical care and some changes to diet and daliy routine .

My babys name is Holley she is a shih-chi all white with medium length hair very cute she is about to be 14. Little over three weeks ago she started doing this at about midnight n there was nothing open (at least nothing i knew was open @the time) until 8am which was the same time her primary vet opened so i took her there, so my little girl did this for about 8hrs she wasn't as intense but it was not far off from this and i stayed very vigilant and tried anything to help. She was such a tough girl, what a fighter she just wouldn't give up and long story short after the primary had her until around 4pm that afternoon, they then had us take her to emergency vet 2 towns over where they then wanted to keep her an additional 3 days. Holley then stayed 2 additional days and nights. These entire 3 days were so tough n touch n go the entire time, eventually around 3 am the 3rd day after tons of testing, xrays, treatment and all kinds of stuff the vet told me she was finally starting to breathe better on her own without as much oxygen assistance n then at around 11 that same morning she told me that if she could breathe on her own without assistance in a few hours and stayed stable throughout the noon then she would be able to come home that very night. Eventually we were called to set up a pick up time n she came home! Where she's been since. There's been a few bumps here and there and i feel like we're not out of the woods yet since it takes longer because she's a little older n is currently still on meds although she is tapering off, i prey she makes a complete recovery like this old chap. Didn't want to make it too long with all the sad details but i guess it's still a long comment/story. True story, anyways this old chap proves that there is still hope for my girl and hope for any of you on here looking for a glimmer of hope. Even my girl can bring a tiny bit of hope for others now. Thank you so much for posting this! My girl, small terrier mix Yorkie looking thing was just diagnosed with a level4 heart murmur last week, just prior to Labor Day. They gave her Vetmedin ½ a tab 2x a day…which has not gotten rid of her gagging cough yet, and tonight she started that heavy panting breathing which I counted was at 24 breaths per minute…so I immediately panicked. I don’t have pet insurance so I’m afraid to even think about rushing to the ER unless I need too. The vet also gave me Lasix and said if her breathing becomes labored, I should give it to her and get her back to the vet as soon as possible. So if I can’t get her in tomorrow morning, I’ll take her to the ER. Ugh, she’s only 11, and I’m just praying she will make it…oh and my baby girl is Chloe btw 😊

I would always tell him to focus when he would have a seizure and it seem I like he wanted me to tell him to focus while he was going through this. That was the hardest life experience I ever had in my entire life and I never want to experience that again. I'm just now getting home from dropping him off to celebrate his life the right way. Levi had so much love for me as I had for him. Again thank you guys.

+Bronwyne Mirkovich I give you my heartfelt and sincere thanks for three reasons. First, for rescuing dogs. Second, for not giving up your dogs to shelters because you could not or would not pay for their health care. (As you probably know, there are too many wonderful pets and not enough good homes. And people who buy dogs and/or dump them at shelters for whatever reason are two causes of this problem.) So, on behalf of your pets past, present and future: thank you from the bottom of their (bred too little by irresponsible breeders) hearts. But lastly, I wanted to thank you on a personal level for posting this video. We rescued our first dog Peanut from a kill shelter. As a pure-bred Shih Tzu he is a hot mess when it comes to being bred for looks and not for health. Now blind due to his "confirmation eyes," and with congenital early kidney disease, Peanut was bred especially small so his little chest cannot accommodate his heart and so he has valve problems. After a recent echo, he is on benazapril (sim. to enalapril) but his breathing was quicker than I remembered (or maybe I was just noticing it now) and so I started to panic. I found your video and immediately felt relief because Peanut's situation was not as bad as what you filmed. Of course I felt bad for poor Sol in the video, but he is so lucky to have a committed owner that sees him as a beloved family member. I am wondering how Sol has been doing lately? Is he still only on enalapril? Did you have any experience with benazapril? We figured we would go with the latter because it is processed by both the kidneys and the liver and we are concerned about Peanut's kidneys (enalapril is only processed by the kidneys). But we know enalapril has been around a lot longer, so maybe that would be better. I will be seeing a cardiologist next week and want to learn more about tracking RRR...apparently "there's an app for that!" Bless you and your family -- furry and otherwise. Your video really helped me :-)

I rescued a dog too, and she has an "innocent" murmur. It concerns me because she's 2 years old. She coughs occasionally, but not too drastic. The doctor says not to worry. However, I want to get a blood test and and ultrasound stat (ecg??) Because I at least want to know her status and decide what needs to happen from there.

It's great that you've decided to video your dog through the process. On a side note, as soon as you notice your pet having any sort of breathing difficulty especially those with abdominal effort which means your dog is in respiratory distress, you need to immediately bring your dog to the veterinary emergency hospital instead of waiting till the early mornings. Some dogs aren't that lucky depending on the severity of the CHF.

He was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago. I pray for many more years with him. He does not cough and if I didn't know I wouldn't know. He's super active and healthy appetite. It's hard to keep him still. Thank you for putting up this post and particularly for the title which enabled me to find it. Last night my dog died of heart failure. She has always had a hard pant and I have really been expecting her trachea to collapse. At about five pm after she had fed as enthusiastically as ever I noticed her pant was worse. About two years ago I called up the vet in the middle of the night for similar and she was right as rain the next morning. And I felt like a nuisance. Yesterday evening I noticed that she was not able to get comfortable and couldn't lie down but I didn't compute that it was why I should have immediately have taken her to the vet. At 1.30 she still hadn't lain down and was panting (on my bed) and I knew that she was going to pass out with exhaustion for not having rested for so long therefore I phoned the emergency services and then took her as suggested into the vet about 45 mins away and asked for her to be euthanised. I'm totally against keeping suffering pets alive; she had an awful time after two other emergency ops. The vet dithered a bit because of computer problems and needed me to sign a consent form and my Norfolk Terrier started slowly to rattle and slump and died on the vets table as or just before the drug was administered. She was 10 and a half years old and always had significant soft palate problems. Great chutzpah and a super little dog. I just wish I had taken her immediately to the vet when I noticed she was unable to lie down. I could have saved her the panic and discomfort of being unable to take in oxygen for seven hours and had her comfortably euthanised. Instead she had to die laboriously. It's when the dog can't lie down and stays sitting that you need to get to the vet quickly. Basically I dithered. But thanks for the video because it enabled me to see that she was having heart failure. The bill was £240 including cremation just fyi.

Seeing this video breaks my heart. ☹ I am happy though that you posted this to give us pet owners an idea of the symptoms of heart disease in our canine best friends. May I also add here that we shouldn’t think the disease is inevitable nor only do something when the symptoms start to appear. We could be more proactive in taking care of our dogs by having them scheduled for regular vet visits and cardiac ultrasound tests. Also, I would suggest ensuring that the food we feed them have sufficient amounts of taurine. I’m not saying that one given food type is better than the other, because no study supports any correlation yet between heart disease and pet food. However, it would still be best to rely on what experts are recommending, which is, at the moment, dealing with taurine deficiency.

My beloved dog started with a cough and I thinked was that, a winter cough. But this cough doesn't disappear and searching on internet I found the conection between cough and cardiomyopathy. We ran to vet and at the moment we are making a treatment against possible respiratory tract infections, and in 15 days we will take a radiography searching hearth anomalies. My dog has 10 years old at least, she is old, we don't know her age because she was a stray dog. Today is the second day of antibiotics, steroids and so for the possible infection, cough is getting off but some strange anormal breathing now started... I was thinking first it was a reaction to the medicines, a panting for a little fever or so, but after some hours I became to thinking that it was a signal of a congestive hearth .... :( I was really worried... searched again on internet, and you are like an angel to me. Your Sol's video and your comments let me breath again... My dog is almost the same size of Sol but she doesn't make so heavy breathings. I was thinking the end was near but you return peace to me,, Thanks a lot, really thanks for this video and the explanations. You and Sol are very brave, God bless both of you.

Pavel Nieto o4crossfire makes a good point. You never want to assume anything when it comes to labored breathing. There is a real difference between kennel cough and cough associated with heart failure (fluid collecting in the lungs.) Your vet should be able to tell the difference and if they cannot then seek the opinion of another vet. A cardiologist is always best but not everyone can take their dog to a vet cardiologist. Antibiotics only generally prescribed for pneumonia and not for regular kennel cough. Don't be afraid to ask all the questions and seek another opinion if you don't get the results quickly. Make sure you keep copies of all your dog's medical records and x-rays and blood work should you need to take your dog elsewhere or go to an emergency clinic in the middle of the night. Keep all his/her history in a file and take it with you to all appointments. All the best for your little one.

04crossfire yes, I called her vet at next morning and she said everything is ok. It is a normal reaction to corticosteroids the temporal acceleration of breathing. The change of breathing ocurred in the middle night so I couldn't call her vet. But you're right, the best option is to seek professional attention on these cases. Thanks a lot.

Bronwyne Mirkovich you speak only true. I tell you, at the moment the cough has virtually gone :) And about the quickly breathing the vet says is normal, is deffinitely not like Sol, it is more like when a dog has heat. Today is the third day of treatment and I noticed Camila making these particulars breaths after taking the steroids. Also she is eating more and goes more to the bathroom... All of these because the steroids, says her vet. Many thanks for the advices. We have the expected results, the cough has almost gone and the few is productive, and Camila seems better. Anyway I want to ensure that her hearth is healthy, we will make the ecography and X rays, and if something is not good I will search a cardiologist like you mention. And if her vet is not making a good job we will see for others, sure. Thank you Bronwyne, Sol is very lucky for having you :)

Take your dog to the vet as fast as possible. If its CHF, your pet will need meds. They need a diuretic to get the fluids out of their lungs, and body. The fluids are the wheezing, and the coughing is likely the heart. Hopefully your fur baby will be good.

I know how your feeling right now! My dog had CHF stage 5 out of 6 and there is no way on this earth, that I can see my dog everyday knowing how chipper and happy and frisky, looking into his little eyes and seeing that he's not feeling good and struggling to breathe on a day by day basis, imagine the struggles he's going through at night, and tomorrow brings a new day of struggling to breathe day after day, my dog he was so weak could hardly walk each day seemed to had gotten worse. I couldn't take it, all that hacking trying to breathe, those little babies dont deserve to suffer like that, no ma'am. We done all we could for him! There is no need in prolonging their suffering, Really that's all they are doing is suffering. Yes we want them here with us forever and dont want to let them go, but let them take their rest! We had to put our dog pooh bear down, on August 15th, 2020 a Maltese, just like the one in the picture above, and do you think I wanted to do that, NO! Not at all, I cried daily, and the tears are falling now as I am writing this reply! We have to let go! And its hard to let go of something or someone you love! They are a part of the family! And Id rather him be put to sleep than to see the struggle like that. And good luck with you and your dog! God bless, and stay safe!

My mini daschund of 15 years passed today from a family decision to not let her suffer anymore. The quoted cost + the uncertaintly that she would make it through the treatment for this + thrombocytopenia + liquid in the lungs without suffering was how we decided. I think deciding to put her down was for the best but my heart was still trying to think that ."No, she can fight it, Please, everyone try to let her fight it." But vets said she had a lot of issues to juggle and I know in my head that I did the best I could to make the decision that she wouldn't suffer.. I'm just always going to wonder until I pass as well, if she could have fought it. And I feel so selfish for thinking that she could have, because signs were there that she could have fought it. (Not eating, but she drank water still, was urinating, interacted with me strongly.) It's the hardest thing ever and I hope this video will save multiple fur babies

Dont beat yourself up on it, all the problems listed plus the age , its just best they dont suffer further, you could have maybe prologned a bad state with another 6 months, 6 months the dog wouldnt enjoy. Sol has been taking his medication for 17 months (vetmedin and enalapril) and at his recent cardiology exam they were shocked by how well he is doing and defying the odds. He has someone looking over his furry shoulder.

This is amazing that he lived through this! My dog has congestive heart failure with breaths between 24 and 55 bpm. She has gone downhill exponentially since last week. She is only 4 pounds - a tiny, fragile little thing. She's on Pimobendan and Lasix, but nothing seems to be helping her. She was coughing so I brought her to the ER last week (which is also part of the same practice that her cardiologist is in). She came in with a cough, and left barely able to breathe. They loaded her up with Lasix and oxygen. She hasn't been the same since. Her health went downhill so quickly, just from the ER visit. Anyway, I WISH she could have the same outcome that Sol did. Does he still breathe like that? I want nothing more than for her to heal, but right now, she's just a shell of what she was last week. I don't know what to do to help her. Has anyone else ever had anything like this happen? Just a sudden decline, perhaps after medical treatment? I'm broken hearted. And I hate seeing her suffer. But glad to see that Sol grew and thrived!

Shes pushing hard. And she has lost so much weight in the last 3-5 days. I noticed swelling in her belly a week ago. Now I'm also noticing swelling in her chest just under her throat. And every 10-20 mins or so shes shudders just once almost like hyperventilating. I'm so scared she wont make it to her cardiology appointment on the 14th. I'm currently laying in bed with her balling my eyes out cause idk what to do. I dont get paid till friday so I cant bring her to the er. So shes just laying her suffering. I cant take it anymore😭😭😭

@@DrixMaloneDFS she passed away shortly after dealing with all these issues. Nov 6th 2019😔 She was 1yr and 9 months old. It was rough but Im happy she's not in pain anymore. She was always in so much pain. She used to be so playful but once she started holding onto fluid and having breathing difficulties she never wanted to do anything anymore. She was just miserable, I miss her terribly, she was just a puppy.😭❤

@@DrixMaloneDFS actually after re reading my comment I think she passed away the next day. I came home from work and found her gone, in her cage. She didn't make it to her cardiology apt. I think that's why I was so upset that night. I just had a feeling she wasn't gonna make it very long. I even set up a camera that day so I could watch her from work.

Hello , My precious Siba died 2 months ago and i kept blaming lasix.Since he started furosemide he went downhill. The last 22 days he wouldnt even eat and lost weight. I got so mad cause i really thouth that lasix was the reason and i kept on telling to the cardiologist to minimise his dose. Of course now it is too late but i still think that lasix had something to do with it.

thank you for sharing Sol to me. My poodle just turned 12 years old on the 5th Jan 2016 (this year). She is my first dog, I didn't have any knowledge of this symptom. I have noticed now and then she cough but only a second, sounded like she was chocking from the food..

Get her checked for CHF! My Layla, mini schnauzer almost died two weeks ago today. She is now on four different medicines: Lasix 20 mg, Enalapril 2.5 mg, spiralactone 2.5 mg and pimobendan twice a day, she was diagnosed with severe valve disease. I noticed her coughing in the mornings and after playing. The coughing only began three weeks before and wasn't often. I wish I would have recognized. them sooner.

Hi, thank you for posting this. I am finding that my dog is suffering with the same thing and was doing alright until her meds didn't arrive in the post. Last night was terrifying and she can't lie down to sleep as it causes her to cough. It sounds as if there is light at the end of the tunnel with meds. She's 14

Thank you for posting this video. 7/6/15 we have a 12 1/2 year old fox terrier mix that is making the same sounds. Not coughing. We just started him on the heart meds. Hope this will help. It has been a few days and we haven't noticed any positive changes.

Thank you so much Bronwyne for sharing this - today my dog has exactly the same symptoms and being a weekend our vet is not open so I was desperate to find out why she was breathing in this way. Its so distressing to see but I am so grateful you took this video - off to emergency after hours Vet right now...

My dog started this yesterday morning. I thought it was covid at first. I will take her to a vet tomorrow. She has been panting all day but is able to move around drink and eat but I think she is exhausted by now
