Media history really ought to give Steve Allen more kudos, particularly for giving time to people such as Sahl and Bruce.

lol Opening for Julie London and Peggy Lee. Sultry white blues artists. Audience: Integrated(?). Suits, ties and dresses. Martinis and Whiskey/rocks. Parliaments and Pall Malls. Reflections of a bygone era, frozen in time.

Steve Allen, a true TV Pioneer. Peabody Award 'Meeting of Minds'>1977-81. 8.9 imdb Pre-cable. PBS. The only way it could be broadcast w/o interference/censorship. Exceptional!

I think I saw this when it first aired. My first Mort experience. I was expecting something different after Steve explained the part about him being a "sick" comic in the Lenny Bruce mold. Mort could have been a Boy Scout troopmaster without changing his act.

@@keithsmith4780 What's your point? SA was a prolific songwriter whether or not anyone today remembers it! People under 70 years old don't know anything beyond what's posted on their FB page or Twitter feed and those who are older are losing their memory! Besides, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone under 70 years old who has even heard of Steve Allen or Mort Sahl or Lenny Bruce or Shecky Green! Give it another 10 years and no one under 30 will know who George Carlin was! Not knowing anything about the history of any subject has become an American tradition!

Mort Sahl. Our only contemporary political philosopher. That's an appropriate tagline. Coming from Steve Allen, a bit of a social philosopher himself, that is high praise, indeed.
@NoOne-kr4jc

Steve Allen was also quite conservative in comedy at the same time so to earn his admiration was quite a thing. He did not understand Richard Pryor, and it sounds like he respected Lenny Bruce! At the same time of being conservative, he was quite open to new developments like putting on Jerry Lee Lewis twice. Compare that with the highly rigid Ed Sullivan, not that he was much of an entertainer.

Steve Allen and Mort Sahl were only "philosophers" if you're being really generous with that word. Fact that anyone finds them even notable or impressive in that way is more of a statement of their own limited horizons intellectually. They're entertainers-comics-who sometimes had opinions on political and/or cultural/social issues and did observational commentary on it. This idea that that's "revolutionary" or "philosophy" is ridiculous. It's basically just punditry or being like a talking head on TV. They…had opinions on stuff going on in the world, like we all do. Sahl also had ill conceived conspiracies about the JFK assassination. Straight up juvenile to act like stuff like that, or the bunch of other ignorant things he believed and stated in his act, are profound "philosopers" words or whatever. He could be as ignorant as any of the rest of us.
