To the guy asking about bouncing back into the daw through the console. What we did when I was using the Neve Genesys (not black) was to use a patchbay. Patch the output into a stereo (or two monos) input on the interface. Make sure the track you're recording to on the daw is routed to nowhere, ie disabled, no output bus. This is critical to prevent feedback, and daw agnostic. Also note that the output is different to the monitor out (signal going to the studio monitors). I mean you still need to hear stuff.

I did it for two years and it was the most mind numbing and one of the most physical jobs I've ever done (and I worked in construction for over five years too). The real cool people take a rare Squier 7-String from 2001 with dual humbucker layout and do a full no compromise 2.500$ rebuild, including a custom reversed 70´s neck. I can even explain why thats cool. It´s because you know before you are doing it that both communitys, fender and the metal community as well will hate this guitar. Ontop of that you also involve guitar history. So in order to be real cool, you have to know that it is pointless in terms of impressions that it is going to make on the internet. You know you are going to be an Alien and you do it, because you want to be that Alien Of course... I admit it... I wrote Squier on the 1000$ custom neck on purpose just to make American II owners angry. Hehe. You need to have that extra value after you heard every single Keith Richards open G joke on the internet from all the fender people I Have to admit that I want to play this frequently on the internet tho. Noone is gonna like it, but everyone will wonder what the hell that thing is... and maybe thats going to make some impressions in the end, after you went through hell just to get a highlight for yourself that really is bringing the joy back when you play it.

SO i bought a 4000 euro Gibson custom shop les paul standard. It's a beautiful guitar, plays great, very resonant and i do love the way it feels. There really is something about a gibson. However, this is the 6th Gibson i've tried to own , and yet again. The tuning issue. I just wish we had music stores close to us so we can try gibsons and find one that does stay in tune. I'm not a Gibson fanboy. I own prs , music man, mayones etc. For the money, they are definitely worth it. I just feel conflicted because i love the GIbson for its positives, but if it doesn't stay in tune, whats the point? I do have perfect pitch (not blowing smoke) so maybe i'm just being a snob, but it bother the hell out of me when it goes off even slightly. I'm afraid to do bends on it My opinion, if your going to spend that much, find a music store no matter how far and try a bunch. Do you want to be safe at that amount of money? buy the brands i mentioned. Best guitars fit and finish. My only gripe with prs is that they don't use ss frets. If there is anyone one that is a metal head but has a soft side for a owning a gibson like me, please help me with the tuning. How is it that other guitars with the same string angle stay in tune? is it really just the nut? Anyway sorry baout the rant. Love this community and Glenn, Thank you for my 6 wonderful years since i watched you !

Someone can explain, why in the world complain about good affordable guitars? I give an example, of why Fender, yes Fender produced one of the best guitars for the price, the American Fender Stratocaster Deluxe SSH, with the fase push button, rollnut, locking tunners, etc. and stopped producing that model, and produced a new model with the old specs, worse quality and even more expensive, that's company greed or Vintage Snob damage? Might of got buried in the last video but that automated mic placement system is cool AF! Wanted to say you could make it so you can get EXACT locations, and maybe even dual axis (L/R and in/out) if you retrofit in an old 3d printer or something with stepper motors. A lot of older printer have physical controls on them for axis location and then itd just be a matter of replacing the motors. Since a printer usually has 3 axis + extruder you could have two, 2 axis mic placers!
@fallenshallrise9 ай бұрын
I'm usually alone in the studio and don't have a motorized mic stand so when I'm dialing in a mic placement I usually just loop a riff, press record and move the mic 4 or 5 times starting near the center of the cone. (I already did the same test keeping it at the edge of the dust cap and starting on the grill, then moving it back further and further and I know I like the proximity effect of having it right against the grill.) Then I listen back and figure out which position had the best balance. I can't listen and move the mic at the same time but it's free. Love the idea of a DIY motor and threaded rod or some other home built motor that would let you at least move the mic horizontally.

I ordered a brand new Gibson Flying V out of a music store last year. Amazing to play and it is actually now the only guitar I use, but the finish is quite horrendous. Quite a few flaws in the nitro and the fretboard has many tool marks and the wood itself is somehow rough or extra dry. I maintain all my guitars and I thought the dryness could be solved by some fretboard care. It seems I was wrong. At some point ~half a year later I contacted Gibson asking if the particular run of guitars had gotten similar complaints (wood quality?). Well they blamed me for it. Thanks Gibson.

Glenn, you'll want to take a look at the Pyramix DAW by Merging Technology. It's a DSD DAW, and also uses Merging's "DXD" format (24-bit, 352.8 khz sample rate PCM) that has the same bit rate as a DSD stream. From what I understand, Pyramix transcodes DSD into DXD to be processed by plugins, and then converts it back when you render to DSD. So, yes, it looks like you can't use plugins directly on a DSD stream, but you can definitely record and publish in DSD, and use plugins in that production.
@the_panos9 ай бұрын
Yes that's exactly what it does. I used it for years in the mastering studio I worked in. However, it does this with a specialised hardware DSD unit that costs thousands of dollars, along with an ADA unit required for it to load (basically a giant dongle if you already have decent AD conversion!) that costs a few more thousand then there's the software itself. Great software though, I miss the incredible editor and its crossfade functions I haven't seen any other daw replicate, not to mention how insanely powerful it was. When you need what it does, it's the only game in town.

One annoyance I can't seem to shake is that; Marshall discontinued the Valvestates, great and now midly sought after death metal legend line of amps, to replace them with the fucking MG-SERIES?! I know it's supposed to be a budget amp setup, but the Valvestates were too, and they could sound really great. The MG is literally better sounding when the amp is bypassed, using a preamp pedal in the effects loop and you swap the stock speakers lol. I know this because I own a MG100HDFX half-stack and have had it for 2,5 years, still can't polish the turd, so I bought a Valvestate 8100 and a 2x12 with great speakers, night and day. (Marshall is still selling the MG-line) The thing which also annoy me is how much "Vintage" and "the marshall sound" type of nostalgia trip Marshall is in. The DSL-line is fantastic, couldn't they like maybe make an affordable 100W head and a pairing cab with the same tonal quality? The cheapest DSL head (here in Norway atleast) is the 1W-version, costing around 2900kr or roughly 250 euros, but that's excluding the costs of cabs, cables, guitars etc.

To the guy with audio crackling/hiccups - 1. swap USB cables. 2. Check with latency mon if your system is ok or if any software or drivers messes up with real time audio. The best would be install new system like w11 from xlight. Just don't install the bare minimum version because it has some problems with control panel stuff opening. 3. Adjust the buffer, you want at most 128 sample rate, and would be nice if your CPU would do 64 sample rate buffer without hiccup. 4. measure RTL with RTL Utility from oblique audio. That will tell you your latency caused by audio interface. And boy they can be bad. 6-10ms is ok.

17:05 I’ve heard that the issue is often not the tubes. Before buying new tubes, you should try other solutions first. Maybe the pots need to be cleaned. Maybe it’s a capacitor. Something else.

Here is the reason why Glenn got a, Neve instead of an SSL. It's really quite simple. People like myself. Worked at the same studio. As, Bob Clearmountain. In New York City. Back in the late 1970s. And I learned a few things from Bob. Bob loved his SSL 4000 E with the G Automation. But he pretty much tracked everything. Through that Neve. That's where he got the sound you hear. But he got the mix. With the SSL. And so today. The SSL has been very well Emulated. By numerous firms and individuals. That pretty much. Everybody now has an SSL 4000. In their laptops. As does Bob Clearmountain. But he tracks everything through vintage Neve. Mostly. Though he does do some overdub work. With early, first release, Apogee, single channel, microphone input, interface. But tracks most everything through vintage Neve. And for those of us that love Bob Clearmountain. And I certainly do. That's how he got his fabulous out. Track with Neve mixed with SSL. So Glenn made a Fabulous Purchase. And he is all set! I think he might have Stephen Slate, SSL plug-ins? Maybe somebody else's? It really doesn't matter. They are all good. They all emulate the SSL very nicely. You get that parametric EQ. You get those dynamics, expanders and gates. That bus limiter. Now all in software. And no waiting. I actually never thought that, Glenn was all that smart. I mean he had some, Neve microphone preamps. And he knew what he needed. 1073's, 1084's and maybe just maybe a couple of 1081's? Which he still doesn't know to get. He hasn't gotten wise to the, A/B Neve op amp sound. LOL Rupert really didn't like those. But they really sound the best! They are beyond fabulous for rock 'n' roll. They have an extra edge to them. The 1073, 1084's don't have. But as the accomplished, Chrysler minivan manufacturer used to be. He won't know what he's missing. As he still a good guy and should not be Scorned. For not having some, A/B Neve circuits. To hear those Metal Guitars really jump out of the speakers! Because it has a minute amount of, crossover, order dissonant distortion edge. That does not exist in the pure Class-A Neve stuff. That sounds like you've added an additional, Sanitary Pad, to your sound. With the pure Class-A circuitry. I mean it's nice, sure. It'll never sound bad. No.. But it can also lack something. Because of its purity. And how much purity do you want for Metal? Don't you want it spitting out a few extra electrons? Something that can roar and cut through better? You see. There were basically 2 schools of thought.. One in the USA. One in the UK. UK wanted purity. Class-A. USA wanted a bit more aggression. We had Class A/B. With a little dissonant crossover notch distortion. Adding that extra MMetal, Zing! Yeah baby! Do it to it! But it's okay. Glenn will still have fun with that. And his SSL is inside the computer. Where it's supposed to be. I mean can you get one of those, 72 input SSL 4000 E's into your living room? Chances are, no. That requires a big living room. And a Laptop SSL 4000. Only takes up the space of a laptop. That is a lot more affordable by square footage. So when Bob Clearmountain is not home. And he's out and about.. He's got an SSL on his MacBook Pro. And he pretty much just engineers the same way. Though he did tell me many years ago. He couldn't use API. He told me he just could not get is sound wwith an API. And I perfectly understand why. It was, too clean.. He needs a fair amount of, VCA and FET distortion grunge. That colors is sound. That he uses that way. And yeah. He could never get the sound that way out of an API. I like both. I like all three. I've had API and Neve. I've never owned an SSL. I almost got a 9000. But then I came to my senses. I was going to swap my Neve for it. I ccame to my senses. In hindsight? I probably should have gone for the SSL 9000. It's just a 4000 on steroids.. And CLA likes them. He's good. I like his aggressive engineering style. But I've always found him, too intimidating. To walk up to and say hi.. When I was at the AES Conventions for, 41 years. And there would be CLA. I'd love to say hi but? He's got a gaggle of people around him. And he is rather loud. Like New Yorkers are. It's from spending a lot of time down in the subway. About as loud as a rocket motor sound. You have to scream to have quiet private conversation. On the subway. Before they were all closed up tight and air-conditioned. I remember the old subways. Oh my God! #1IRT the Broadway line. So I was working off of W. 57th St. But I was staying at 109th and West End.. It was a fun walk. A fun subway ride. A fun cab ride. Bus ride. If you didn't feel like walking. But on lovely days. Walking was a wonderful thing to do. That's one of the great things about New York City. People have their feet on the ground! So in the end. Glenn surprised me. He's actually smarter than he appears. He got a Neve Genesis. And oh by the way. I think he's got a bigger one than George Massenburg has? What George is doing with a Neve? I don't know? That does not sound like his gear at all! Maybe he's getting senile? I do not know? I've known George since I was 15 years old and he was 23. So I do not know what he is thinking? Even though we were both mentored by the same guy.. We are related through mentor. And we both got our first recording studio jobs. At the same recording studio. He was there a few years before me. And then he moved on. And I moved in. Now I am certainly not a George Massenburg type myself. I just like making nice recordings with the available equipment that people have already designed. That all has a sound to it. That we use in our palette of colors. Of making recordings sound good. And it doesn't matter how you make them nor how you mix them. It only matters whether they sound good or not. And it really does not matter what you use to do so. Everything will work. Everything will sound good. But it won't sound like Neve or API or SSL. If it's not. Whether in hardware or emulated in software. It's all pretty good today. I've had a fabulous Neve console since 1984. For the past 40 years. And I am now moving on. Into my retirement. Without it. For the first time in my life. In my Professional Life. I've been in the business for over 50 years. But I used that one audio console for 40! It's amazing! It's all grungy sounding. That's what makes it sound great. Not purity but the grunge! That's what Rupert Neve got wrong in the end. And because I was also kind of related to API for a couple of decades also. And everything has its own sound. Arrowsmith was not done on SSL. It was done on API. So were folks like the Doobie Brothers. Even Linda Ronstadt on API. That is not Class-A, circuitry, at all. It's not. That's the sound of, A/B, circuitry. It cuts through better. It has a better edge to it. It's more aggressive sounding. It's more suited for American rock 'n' roll. Not the mellow rock 'n' roll of the UK. Designed for Class-A Neve.. And you can hear those differences quite plainly. It's all in what you want your product to sound like. So I've also tracked with API and mixed on Neve. It has a different sound. Than that of SSL rock 'n' roll. And one can plainly hear the difference. The EQ's are much different. And the circuitry adds its own character, itself. Being,, Class-A/B. And it'll sound more rock 'n' roll--ish. Say if you are in the USA.. Or want to sound like that. And some of our friends across the pond. Kind of like that USA aggression. Because it's zippy sounding. More so than mellow Class--A on everything. That can get boring sounding. It's so mellow. And after a while it's, ugh! It's, too mellow. And then it sounds kind of Blah. With No Zip to it. And you lose a level of carbon Excitement Factor to the sound. But hey. Glenn is a Canadian. And he likes freezing cold sound. He's in Windsor. It's like Detroit only worse. Everything is more expensive. There American cars have funky French name. Go figure? Glenn stopped trying. And became a Recording Engineer, instead. And we are glad he did! Where would we be without Glenn Fricker? I certainly would not know as much about Metal Music as I do now. Which I can now better appreciate. I still hate the sound of the lyrics. They suck. I don't record lyrics like that. That's dogs barking. It's boys trying to cough out, their vocal cords. Great! Throw them a Milk Bone! I record much better, Metal Vocals. I have a technique. A shtick. And it's rarely on Condenser Microphones. Ugh! Try a Ribbon. You could EQ the crap out of those. And they take it really well. And then you put the 1176 thingy on. And follow that with a downward expander. Then you got something. That will be understood, easily. That's my job. Making sure you hear and understand the lyrics. I want Articulation! And I get it. It's fun. And the track sounds real clean. So I'm really very happy that Glenn has gotten this, Neve Genesis. He absolutely deserves it. And the SSL is in his software. He is set! He's got it all.. And can use the Genesis. With your favorite software. Or at least with one of them like ProTools. He's probably wondering why he's wasting so much time making videos now? I think he's going to get real busy. I would like to see him get real busy. I'm sick of watching his show! I left myself so hard. I sometimes don't make it to the bathroom in time! It's all his fault! It's because he's Canadian! He thinks he's Dan Aykroyd! Well he's not! I retrieve great satisfaction from Glenn's shows. II love the guy. He's a hoot. RemyRAD

Good shout about recommending taking time to learn a new daw, they all operate differently. I have been a Logic Pro user for years, love it. But recently got into Cubase, bought the stripped down Elements 13 (as I don't need it for recording and mixing, not that I do a lot of either) but it's a huge learning curve indeed. Have you done much with Cubase? A mate of mine swears by it, but he's a power user and had been for years. it looks nice though and some of the stock plug ins are fantastic!!

Hey Glenn, I remember you switching pickups on you green HB Amarok to Fishman Fluence as Fluff suggested and (I presume) you were quite happy about it. That was before you started the whole "pickups matters little" thing. I'm curious to know if you'd still think the upgrade was worth it and done at the correct priority?
@MaximusAdonicus9 ай бұрын
Interesting, never heard of this! Those Amarok's come with EMG Retro Actives, which should be pretty good pickups. Thus changing from good pickups to other brand's good pickups shouldn't make a huge difference... might have a different voicing though 🤷♂ But since we are talking about EMG vs Fishman, about 100% of the time the reason for the switcharooney is "I hate EMG's, Fishman's are so much better"... 🙄 There was actually a comparison here on Tubes that had EMG's and Fishman and others, which I watched and there was indeed a difference in tone with the Fishmans, but was it better? Not in my opinion. It was just a different dominant frequency.
@chinatosinthiti30769 ай бұрын
@@MaximusAdonicus I agree, when it comes to those EMGs vs Fishman it's just different voicing. How that fits in a mix will probably require a recording test and side-to-side comparison, which sounds like a lot of work to figure out "If these pickup swaps are worth it?"

Now about Harley Bentons...my local crack dealer (music store) has a few. Honestly they're well made and there's not a lot to complain about. I wish Gibson would reliably do fretwork like that! It's a hell of a guitar for 500 dollars, for the most part. But the pickup cavities were routed flat to the back rather than to the top and so the pickups sit at the wrong tilt angle relative to the strings. That's a problem that grinds my gears. Overall I think they're generally very competently made guitars BUT....the ones I've picked up lack that mojo that makes you want to keep playing it rather than other guitars. They've got a generic feel to them that keeps them in the "meh" category rather than being guitars you LOVE.

Hey Glenn, I love your videos, so I wonder, why don't you make a 3d printed guitar comparison video and probably put an end to the whole tone wood discussion. On a funny side note, few months ago I bought my 13 yo son a couple of Seymour Duncan humbuckers, he tried them for the first time and sounded like crap, my son look at me with puppy eyes almost on tears and said, "they sound expensive" right after that I realized I connected the pickups wrong and that's why they sounded awful, he learned his lesson after this, he really enjoys your videos too.

Thanks for answering about that "union job" statement. People don't realize where their nice fancy car comes from, and don't realize that it's 50k because there are thousands of persons working in just-in-time across north america to get your ass in that seat. Thanks to all that contribute to our awesome society instead of mooching and leeching.

Remember Tony iommi did not get his finger cut off sitting at a cushy white collar job. A lot of the innovators in metal music worked their asses off in factories. You could say metal was literally born in the foundry's and factories of the UK and and the US, cities like Detroit, London and Birmingham.

Not to mention Gibson sues other guitar manufacturers over body shapes.
@bmxriderforlife12347 ай бұрын
Gibson doesn't even make 50 style guitars of their own properly anymore. The old scale length measurements will affect sound. Yet will shut down boutique makers who make so few guitars just to make crap and not make a true vintage inspired design.
