Solar Cooker

It's a very cool thing! It's handy and reliable. It is a solar cooker in sunny weather and an umbrella on rainy day. You can boil water, fry eggs, cook potatoes and dumplings, also and soup. It is also perfect for kids who like to learn about solar energy and it is ECO friendly. It takes about 10 minutes to boil a litre of water on a sunny day in summer.

I do solar cooking in the US in the state of Michigan and know how effective it is. Year round long as the sun is shining, food can be cooked. Few people know that it is practical in the US. I wonder if you have to deal in Japan with lack of knowledge and people's trust in what is traditionally done. Unlike my 60/30 solar oven your parabolic umbrella cooker is much more portable. I think more people will like that. I like it.

You should make a collapsable circular trellis to set it in, low center of gravity. If it could clip on at any position that would be cool as well

Hi, I am planning to make a solar oven and gluing aluminum foil to the sides of a box....do you know if the glue gets too hot from the cooking if it will cause toxic gas to contaminate the food? is there a certain type of glue i should use?

@HandsomeSasquatch Hi, the reflectors, mirror or aluminum foil, are not hot because they reflect the sun not absorb but I recommend you to use two-sided tape if you can. All sun lays are concentrated on forcal area where is hot and you put the pot for cooking.

maybe the mirror material can last 6 monthes without loosing reflective propertiy because the dust will be scratching litle by litle, the user will have to be disciplined for using as to clean it and puttiny away.

"perfect for kids" - I wouldn't let a kid anywhere near one of these. I got a different model - a 1.5m rigid dish instead of flexible but otherwise same idea. Will try it for small quantities of maple syrup. The light and heat at the focal point are extremely intense and could cause eye damage or burns. Unlike a fire, you can't see the hot spot until you put something in it. As a test, I put a paper towel at the focal point to see how long it took to set afire. The light reflected off the paper was so bright I saw spots for an hour. Will now wear dark glasses when using it. BTW - it will make a thin pine board flame in 5 seconds even in winter.

You guys must not have wind in Korea....That thing would not last a minute in the winds in Texas. It would either go rolling uncontrolably across the flatlands or if you had it anchored it would just rip to shreds like tissue in a wind tunnle.....Perhaps a smaller cooker, one with less of a profile or lower to the ground?

i love the concept of these cookers but most of them have a fatal flaw - they don't fold very neatly, making them hard to take with you when you're out camping in the mountains :( there's one out there on the market that folds neatly into your backpack, but it costs crapload of dollars -.-'

You can try with your umbrella but the performance would not be as good as this because this umbrella is designed for cooking by solar energy and has a palabolic shape to get more sun rays.
