I got one and I've wired it up to a led PSU, the led PSU gets really hot but the fan sucks the heat away before blowing it thru the heater. It's amazing it heats up my living room no problems and it hardly registers on the electric meter, last year I had a 2000w heater and my bills were outrageous. Ive been trying to find away of controling the temperature, not thermostatically but just a simple power control to turn the power / heat up and down. Thank you for the video aswell🙂 the more people know about it the better as it's things like this that'll save the planet from our over use of energy 🙂

Going to have to use this for my off grid power box I'm making using deep cycle batteries and an old cooler. Cooler can hold the heat in, this can help keep them above freezing so they'll keep working even in cold Canadian winters! genius.

Thumbs Up! Great idea. I bought and tried it out using my Lithium Generator. The weak point is the fan speed and blades --- not a lot of air movement. Heating element generates impressive amount of heat for such a small thing. When I introduced a 4.5V power to the fan, it run a little faster and generated a larger draft but I am afraid the fan may burn out quickly at this rate. Day time heating may work for a room with an array of these small guys but need to switch to batteries at night. And, winter nights are long. I guess we can charge the battery-farm during the day and use the the heaters at night, running off from the batteries. At the same time, we can have other solar panels powering the heaters for daytime use.

My canopy on vehicle sleeps 2 as is only 2 cubic metres of air space. Perfect to take chill off the area. 200 watts of permanent solar to 105 AH Fullriver deep cycle AGM battery, it also gets alternator charge via a dc to dc charger with solar input. Brilliant little heater for short term use.

@@Atemoya26 :there is 3.41 BTUs in a watt. I was given a large solar panel, and figured the best use, without buying batteries, inverters etc, was to use it to heat the house. On a sunny day in winter, it would have kept the furnace off for 6 seconds per day.

No what would be better is getting a heat pump and running that on solar. Heat pumps are WAY more efficient than electric heat so you will get way more heat for the same amount of solar.

My, my. As i read these comments i think were all in trouble. Thank you for saving me the trouble of attempting to build this from scratch. I have been thinking of this very project for a long time and never acted upon it and its so simple. I will be adding a 12v 10a inline fuse and a rocker swiatch to power on off when needed. This is just about right for my camping rig that im now using a delta2 with 500w of solar. Heat isnt such an issue with me cuz im a polar bear but id like to pick your brain about cheap low wattage cooling in roughly 250 cubic feet. Any ideas are helpful and appreciated tia. Ok so if a 100w panel is used for this heater w/fan, I'm estimating that's a 5-6 amp draw. The gain would be the (free) heat when the panel or your array has good sun exposure (open canopy). Otherwise you'll need a good battery bank to draw from. This could be a good part time alternate off grid for a cabin, camper/rv instead of relying on a propane furnace, where I can say mine also draws about 5 amps when the blower fan cycles.

Update! Outside temperature -21 or 22 now and inside green house dramaticly dropped to -9! Not a worry! So where it stands its good till -18 outside to have the + digits inside the greenhouse! I will keep going and reach for those double digits

Hi So I'm a complete novice at this Sola stuff and frankly elec stuff is a bit weird, But seeing your film and the second on I thought I would have a go. 12v 250w sola panel with controller and 4 little fans hoping to use 2 and have 2 in reserve. It turned up and I read the instructions all 2 minuets, connected it all up and Nothing ??? It wanted a battery ? added bat 12v 180 amp full charge, ran 30 seconds and stop start, removed everything connected sola panel to fan and heater nothing removed heater just fan and it runs. Bat connected to fan and heater runs well. The sola panel was producing 20v in the sun BUT ?? Looking into it a bit more 12v - 100w - 8.333 amps so x 2 fans need 20 amps output from sola panel ? am I right or way of. Andy confused in France

Ok, so excellent news! I have another system within the my parents green house that I use, a 1500 watt bucket heater in 15 min intervals on a 24 hour pull pin timer thats pumped with an aqurium pump to a small radiator! So what I did was used the combination of the 2 desk top heaters with one in front of the other and only one fan pushing the air, and the temperature has risen from -1° to 0° rather quick as I was only out there 5 or 10 minutes! So this is a nice way to heat up the air faster, it just can't be used on its own for a greem house in the winter! So I will leave this thread at that! Thats a sucsess! Also I have a temperature/decontamination unit when you enter the green house(enclosed plastic trolley on wheels) I can emagine this should work to preheat the space before entering to get rid of the cold, so it could be excllent for that hopfuly!

Currently I have a 180W Panel running to a 80ah deep cycle marine battery with a 3000W inverter. I ordered the same fan and the electric thermostat. Going to see if it will keep my 3 man ice shack warm. We get a lot of sun here during winter too so will be interesting to see how well this works. (Will hopefully be getting some 6V 200ah batteries and wiring in series for 12v) Will post an update in about a week and a half once everything's in and running. I'll be checking to see if the panel is able to run this and keep batter charged during the day.

Alright, heater has arrived! I wish I could easily add a video to show how this is opporating on a slightly different setup! Temperatures are excellent and the only device here I have to measure is an oven thermometer for cooking meat in the oven! Its funny because that works well and the temperature rose almost instantly. Im going to go outside now and bring the setup outside to see if we can heat during the winter off of one heater core

I received my unit today yeah. I am going to wire it to a cig plug in that I can plug into a USB that I can plug into my solar generator . It weighs alot more than I thought it is for sure heafty. I was going to suggest a small rechargeable battery but then looked up what a jackery was. Charge up the jackery with solar and run the heater/fan at night. I would think it's about the right size for a small room in an RV.

Well 100w divided by 12V = 8.3A of load. A jackery 500(500wh) would run it for about 5 hours. So for heat during the day, you would need one panel to drive this and one panel to charge the battery for 5 hours of night time use. 100w is 340 BTU, not a lot of heat. A 10’ cube(600 sq/ft of surface) with 2” of foam insulation(R10) no windows and perfectly sealed @70F inside and 30F outside(no wind) will need around 2400BTU/hr (.1btu/sq-ft/degreeF/hr) to maintain 70F inside. Windows, air leakage ect make that number go up considerably. 2400BTU =7 of these, so 7jackery 500’s and 14 panels, oh and thats only for 5 hours of night heat:) there is a reason people heat with wood, gas and oil and not solar to electric. Solar electric heat can be done, but you need to use a heat pump(5 plus times more efficient than direct electric heat).

or a heating blanket on low for 10 hours rougly 20-35ah on high you could do it with 45-55ah. they have heating blankets with timers that run for 2 hours on then switches off. could use that and wake up when your cold hit it on again

If you do the math and take into account the efficiency loss this basically draws 10 amps an hour from a 12 volt battery so if you have a 100 amp hour battery and you want the battery to last a long time you can run this for 5 hours and run the battery down to about 50% assuming you're getting the battery fully charged up during the day when the sun is out and the reason you should only run this for about 5 hours on a 100 amp hour battery is you only want to run the battery down to 50% state of charge much lower than that and the voltage is low enough that this thing would really start to show and wouldn't be putting out nearly as much heat and it would cause the battery to degrade much faster as well.

niiice. thank you will be getting one for my campervan with a dedicated portable solar panel so i can save on propane and still be warm enough. im sure it is not powerful enough to heat a whole van.... especially in the dead of winter, but.....on cool mornings or fall or spring when you can stay warm enough with that heater it will work great.

Maybe a person could use a generous soapstone brick pile to absorb some of that heat with. Retain it for a while on a cold day. I'm not really interested in heating every room in the house. A place to keep the plants warm enough to survive with boosted temperatures using indirect heat would be ideal.

Run a copper pipe through the centre of a barrel filled with liquid exhausting upward. Air passes through the water container and retains and gives off radiant heat.. wonder what kind of liquid would be best? Cheers

Glycol sounds like a great solution to your idea! Like automobile radiator antifreeze. It has corrosion protection in the liquid to protect your pipe and barrel. and it resist freezing and would be ideal for temp fluctuations. Great idea 💡🙂

On second thought! A copper pipe inside a larger diameter copper pipe and the void between the two pipes filled with glycol and the center of the small pipe is the air vent. The radiator can be in the shape of a Gatling gun or revolver barrel with the heater placed behind the tubes the heated forced air passes through the pipes heating the glycol filled copper! I just might try this🤔

hi. it would depend on the type of solar panel you use and how thick the clouds are. amorphous solar panels work the best (by far) in cloudy conditions (monocrystalline is a distant second). monocrystalline and polycrystalline work okay if it's an "even" cloudiness and the clouds are not too thick. as long as the panel isn't shaded but it's getting indirect sunlight they can work okay. if it's spotty clouds and the panel is partially shaded then mono and poly don't work well at all. the only panel good if it's in partial shade is amorphous. it might sound confusing - for a better explanation i've got a video on this.

a well insulated van can be heated with 500w, 5 of those $10 heaters... job done. although you wouldnt want to run a long time because, well, batteries... but if you have more solar watts than heater watts then you can run it as long as the sun shines. free heat..

Hi, thank you so much for posting this. I just have a few questions. I am living in a small SUV and last night it dropped to a chilly 20F. Anyways, I would like to use this for two purposes, 1) keep my bananas (and other food) from freezing during the day, 2) possibly keeping myself warm at night. My set up is:100W solar panel connected to MPPT morningstar controller and my car battery. When the weather is warmer, I usually power my 17L Engel fridge with the set up (direct line to battery - 8 gauge wires) - haven't had a problem for the past 2 years with this. I'm thinking in this winter to switch it so that I connect the heater direct to the battery (with a cut off switch if battery drops below 11.5V). Any thoughts? Also, it says there's a "safety" on the heater, does this mean that if it falls over it will shut off? Thanks for all your help!

I am sorry no one took the time to answer you back. Yes, it should work just fine, and yes it means that if it falls over it will shut off. If you have the means, you should invest in a good marine battery to attach to the solar panel, that would hold a charge much longer.

hi. it's just a straight connect. yeah, it handles it fine. it's just a little extra "push" behind the current. it would have to be over roughly 30v for it to have any negative effect. (the only things that need exact voltage are things with sensitive electronics in them - then you use a regulated power supply). interesting side note... i actually own store-bought 12v power supplies that put out 17 volts. they make the "non regulated ones" that way on purpose (usually 14 to 17 volt output for running 12v items).

Nice video! What is the current draw for fan alone? Heater alone? The positive lead splits into two wires. Are there two separate heating elements making a low (1 element) and high (2 elements) possible? What is the current draw for each? Variations in fan speed are likely slower when current is being drawn by heating elements-higher when not.

hi. i don't know the exact breakdown of the current for element and fan (but i can tell you the fan uses almost no electricity at all, just a very small amount). i'd guess the fan only draws 0.05a to 0.06a (50ma to maybe 60ma).

After inspecting the green house further I noticed all sorts of outside exposure because I could see the light from the outside of the green house from working in there at a slightly different time of day! So feed back is good! The environment within there was not completly sealed! So 2 cans of spray foam where added around the perimeter and that should change the information alot for efficency! The ceader shims where lifting the frame in some areas

hi. the main reason i can think of that it might not be heating is that it's not getting enough amps. it needs about 6 for it to work the best. also make sure the connections are solid. if it's all connected properly and you have a good power source then it could be a faulty heater (but that is unlikely)

You would need a solar charge controller this will have an input solar panel and output to the battery and an output for your devices It'll have the brains inside the circuitry to be able to handle the process of putting the power where it needs to go You connect the solar panel to the charge controller and then the device output to your heater when you want to use a battery you connect the battery to the battery port on the charge controller Keep in mind even a small heater needs a surprise me large amount of electricity when it comes to batteries for example you would need pretty much a 12 volt 100 amp hour battery in order to run that heater overnight and that might not be enough to run it overnight you might need like 120 amp hours but 100 amp hours might do it if you get good sunlight That's a $350 battery for that one single hundred watt heater and you need another one of those $350 batteries for each heater you add Solar also becomes a problem 100 watt panel will no longer be sufficient you would now need about a 300 watt panel because you need enough power to continue to run the heater and as well as enough excess power to fully recharge that battery before nightfall again you might even need closer to a 400 watt panel since you're probably only going to get 200 watts out of it you'll be spending a hundred of that running the heater so you'll have a hundred going into the battery now that I think about it that's not enough because you're probably only going to get about 8 hours of real power and you have 1200 watts that you need to put back into that battery so you probably need two 300 watt panels the further south you are the more sunlight you get the less panel you would need but you would need to get a realized 300 watts reliably out of your solar in order to both run the heater and recharge the battery fully per day so that the battery can run the heater overnight It is doable it's just not very cost-effective this is why most off-grid people do not use solar for heat The reason what he is doing work so well is because he's not trying to run it overnight solar panel directly to heater and just run for whatever you can during daylight hours that you could do pretty cheaply

hi. yes you should be able to connect this directly to any 12v power socket (any one that handles 100w or more). you just need to use a 12v plug that can handle the amps. to answer your other question; the wires are all either red or black (positive or negative). it's a pretty easy connection... you just hook all the read ones together and all the black ones together

hi there. all the wires come pre-attached to the unit. all you do is twist the red wires (positive wires) to the red or positive wires of the solar panel (and then connect the black (or negative wires) of the unit to the black or negative wires from the solar panel. btw it doesn't matter whether you connect the red ones first or the black ones first

hi there. that's a good question. i could write a 'whole book' on thoughts about those questions, but to keep it brief, a lot depends on your situation. the solar 'thermal' air heaters (aluminum can ones as an example) are bigger and often fixed to the side of a house, so you have to decide if you want to go that route. using a system like the one shown in this video offers potentially more movability (you can move around the heater and solar panel easier). also, the hot air that is generated is generated on the inside of the room or structure (not the outside like the solar thermal air heaters) so you don't have to find a way to pipe it in. on the other hand the solar "thermal" air heaters are probably more 'efficient' and can also be made to be 'semi-portable' (most of mine are) so they both have advantages. i've got like 4 or 5 different solar thermal air heater vids if you wanna see more about them. i've also got at least 2 more air heater vids coming out this season (fall of 2020).

What if it's 10° here in NJ at sundown. Won't the cans get freezing? I hate the cold. I would not be happy if the cans froze and gave me air conditioning in the winter.

hi. i think the amazon reviews are artificially skewed. what i mean by that is the main complaint in the reviews on amazon that i saw was that people thought the heater would be bigger *and hence they thought it would be more powerful. (the pictures on amazon make it look relatively big or at the least it's hard to tell how big it is)... *but there's no mistaking its size in my video. plus i used tinsel to show exact air flow and showed temp tests (holds 115F all day essentially). the unit itself is pretty sturdy and internal element rated for years of use. i'd call it a small personal space heater 😎

hi. the end of the video may answer your questions. i show it as a desk top heater right on my desk. also i show indoor tinsel test for airflow and analog temp tests showing 115F output. it's great for a desk top (or office space cubicle heater). it would struggle to heat a whole room (unless room is small and you only need a few degrees increase in the temps) * again as far as heating up - it heats up believe me and i got the burns to prove it lol. it's safe but don't touch heating element. another way to describe it is think of a heater vent in your car. it's like a single heater vent in your car blowing on you (on medium speed)

hi there. the heater is connected directly to the solar panel. it doesn't require a charge controller. those are used if you are charging a battery (or a battery bank) with a solar panel (or panels). this 'heater unit' just pulls the power that it needs right from the solar panel. you just need to use a 12v solar panel (and one that can give you the amps that you need). most 100w 12v panels can put out 5.5 to 6 amps. you can always use a larger solar panel if you want. (it just needs to be a 12v one). i was thinking about getting a 200w 12v solar panel. i saw one that was 210w and put out up around 12 amps. that could run 2 of these units. btw - it doesn't hurt the heater or the fan if the power coming off of the solar panel fluctuates. both the fan and the heating element are proportional (meaning that if you give them less power the fan will run just slower and the heater won't get as hot.
