Within the PECSYS Project, the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems (IMM) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), together with Enel Green Power and Forschungszentrum Jülich, developed a solar to hydrogen generation demonstrator based on a 730 cm2 three-cell bifacial silicon heterojunction photovoltaic mini-module. The photovoltaic module has been directly coupled to a water electrolysis system based on a proton exchange membrane (PEM). The system has operated outdoor continuously from June to September 2020 in Catania, Italy. The main results on the system performance at 1000 W/m2 of incident solar radiation are the following:
1. Solar to hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of 13.5 %
2. H2 production rate of 4.2 grams / m2 / hr
3. Optimized bifaciality at 30 % albedo allowing a 16% gain in conversion efficiency compared to mono-facial photovoltaics.

This video shows one of the direct solar to hydrogen generation approaches that were developed in the PECSYS Horizon 2020 Project coordinated by Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin. For more information on PECSYS, please visit: www.pecsys-horizon2020.eu

Isn't it better to install a solar pv system and use the energy to split a mixture of urine and potassium hydroxide? At low electricity consumption, you get Hydrogen and Nitrogen streams at the electrodes while the solution will contain potassium carbonate, a much valued fertiliser. The Nitrogen stream could be added to a closed dome in which various legumes grow in the presence of sunlight, fixing it in the nodules of roots while oxygen is liberated as a byproduct of photosynthesis. Hydrogen could be absorbed in suitable carbon material and released at will.

The important quantity is hydrogen per day per sq meter, it looks like about 30 grams per day. So 100 Sq meters would be enough to fill up a hydrogen EV every 2 days. That sounds great.

Hello dears, I am doing research on water splitting using photo catalysts to produce hydrogen, and the laboratory results can be seen at the following link . This photo catalyst performs water splitting activity in direct sunlight. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6TChoKAjq-cnNk

I have a doubt. What if we made the thickness of both p-type and n-type same? I noticed that n-type is thicker than p-type. Why it is so?

i am not a science student but today i thought about a very stupid question from childhood that if hydrogen can be used as fuel and water have both the oxygen and the hydrogen, then why we don't extract hydrogen from the water, this will be the cleanest way to produce energy. Then i searched about the process it need electrolysis to be done. so then i think about the solar system to produce the electricity for the electrolysis and then we can get the hydrogen while releasing the oxygen, and searched about this type of project and this is amazing (sorry for poor English).

13.5% efficiency is low isn’t it?

Efficiency in PV is measured from the total captured sunlight that turns into electricity. It is not low just thought to be low because the number is much less than 100 percent.

@@hafizuddinmohdlowhim8426 Where did you get 40%? This efficiency can be offset economically if there is high enough demand for it/enough government subsidies. As time flies, the efficiency will get up, but 40% seems like a weird number to select to claim its ability to be "commercially viable". There are already niche applications for hydrogen fuel cells like getting necessary power to rural areas for applications such as construction projects where the grid cannot handle the energy requirements. I do have to do more research to understand the science. There may be truth to what I'm saying, but I have not developed any economical model, yet, so I need to find out.
