Interested if the solar panels leech chemicals into the water
@earthrepairian3332 жыл бұрын
We don't believe they do in any amount that is significant however that is the reason we didn't choose an asphalt roof which leaches chemicals in a fairly rapid pace as do plastic rain water tanks.

Doing all the work myself and using reuse materials really helps out. I also shopped hard for the rain water tank and got a deal. Also received a $7500 tax credit for solar array and $3000 credit with local utility we used for recycle, water and other services. Payback period was about 6 years.

@richdobbs65953 жыл бұрын
I was hoping you would show how to use solar panels directly for rainwater collection. It seems redundant to have a metal roof that you mostly cover with solar panels that are mostly water flow resistant. For your purposes, I guess it is good enough for the space of the carport to be used for two uses. But I'm building a camping trailer, and I want to accomplish those two purposes with no wasted weight.
@earthrepairian3332 жыл бұрын
The panels also shade the roof so it is probably 10 degrees cooler under the roof than before. More functions stacked. Let us know how your project is going! Any photos or video you can share?
@aoeuuaoaou3 ай бұрын
That’s tricky to do. Normally you have gutters to gather the water along the bottom edge, the gutters are attached to the facial of the roof. But there’s no facial with panels, unless you keep the frame on & even the frame isn’t structural enough to hang gutters off. There’s car port kits, like Chiko USA has, which have vertical gutters & a frame you might be able to hang gutters off of. That setup also provides good shade, full water shielding, but it’s repurposed material like here (might be partially recycled steel, steel is actually fairly green depending on source, still not as hardcore as Woody aims at)
@pedroibanez14152 жыл бұрын
Great informative video! Do you have another video on the building of this port? It's identical to the idea I had for what I want to build in my patio. I live in San Antonio TX and I want to harness some solar power for my house and a future EV. Thank you, Sir!

Looks awesome! Did you opt for Sunpower over Tesla panels due to price? Also, what are your thoughts on energy storage i.e. Tesla Powerwall?
@earthrepairian3333 жыл бұрын
We chose SunPower because the had the most efficiency and durability. They are certainly not the cheapest but long term value equation I think will be better. They are still operating at 100 percent 4 years later so far so good. I do think that Tesla now has a great product though and most likely less expensive. Best battery storage for sure and the roof tiles are a game changer once they are able to scale and install efficiently! Thank you! Carpe Diem!

Really cool system...BUT GET OFF THE MODULES! Standing, kneeling, or otherwise putting pressure points on solar modules leads to micro fracturing, which causes lower efficiency and shorter life.

Good to know. We have seen hundreds of installers walk on these SunPower panels, on the edges, with no degradation apparent but good to know.

i dont understand how the solar panels could power ur whole house....my dad has like an apartment (50 rooms) and he uses solar panels to heat water but still needs electricity...mind you we're at jakarta which is very hot....are our solar panels different??
@earthrepairian3333 жыл бұрын
Well we insulated, installed storm windows, insulated again, replaced all lights with LED's and installed a new high efficiency air conditioner. We are at about 90%. It also powers about 70% of our electric car. We used the most electricity in the summer when it is hot and that's when we produce the most energy. The panels are the most efficient panels on the market as well so that helps a lot. Still working great for us 4 years after the install. A good rain last night gave them a nice bath.
