Solar Power to the People
Newspapers, telecommunications and the entertainment industry have all felt the chill winds of change brought on by new technology. Now science is revolutionising power generation. Technology is making alternative sources of energy cheaper, more user-friendly and, crucially, it's decentralising production to the rooftops of homes and commercial buildings across Australia.
So why is the Federal Government moving away from its commitment to renewable sources of energy? Why would it consider reducing renewable energy targets, favouring greenhouse-gas emitting coal and gas?
In part the answer is simple. Price. As the Prime Minister explained recently:
"All of us should want to see lower prices and plainly at the moment the renewable energy target is a very significant impact on higher power prices."
But the renewable energy industry warns that while coal and gas might enjoy a price advantage now, renewables are the future:
"The Government has an ideological agenda. They want to carve out the impact of renewable energy on the network and they want to stop renewable in their tracks." John Grimes, Australian Solar Council. Watch this documentary to see for yourself... where do you think we stand and what should which direction should we be heading???

Anyone that doesn't like wind mills deserves to live right next to a large coal power plant.

That's a fair statement, and then they'll inhale the polluted air, mind you, did you know the vast of mercury pollution now endangering fish and humans is coming from combustion of fossil fuels?

if the wind turbine view is 'offensive', perhaps they can put some other fixtures there in the area of the wind turnbines that might brighten the landscape a bit. I remember when they started installing cell phone towers and many people complained about the view, so they came up with the silly idea of camflauging the cell tower to make it look like a coniferous tree. I think they could have implemented many other better ideas instead. The reality is, you need cell phone towers, so too bad for the people who don't like the view. I feel the same way with other renewable energy systems. However, I don't believe the 'cost savings' being put forth by businesses that install the equipment and also home owners. I think you would see the solar, wind, battery charging systems on a much more larger scale already IF it was really as financially rewarding as stated by many.

What do solar panels produce besides electricity? SHADE. Solar panels should be sited where that shade can be leveraged. (Over parking lots and air-conditioned buildings) Not covering nature's perfect solar collectors which are meadows and pastures.

The salt tower facility looks like the one on I-40. I can't remember if it is in Az or CA. It was there in the late 1990's. I can't find anything about it, but I drove 18- wheel trucks along I-40 and would see it. It was awesome.

No foresight.55% Solar then one of the major Indonesian volcanoes erupts and we have no sun for three years. Then what. Relying on intermittent power for base load power is just ridiculous.

It quite amazing how the electricity demand has low,is where it's prices of electricity is more expensive.

there are reasons people want to make electricity. Cost per kilowatt is a big one. Mine is 13 cents a KW. Pretty good.In Thailand it's 26 cents. If there is less demand, the price may rise.

In Sunny climates makes sense to use solar,if you have a surplus why not convert trucks and buses to gas.Coal could be exported to China good for balance the of payments.

Stop subsidizing renewables, use the cheapest reliable sources first.

Would it be a good idea to power the Pentagon with solar and Battery back up? Maybe all government buildings.

Need to master energy storage. Lithium isnt it. Yes its a high density power storage great for cars but lithium is also a non renuable material with a finite supply. The salt tower is a great idea. But that doesnt work at the home level. I dont know what is best. Maybe the saltwater battery or the nickle bromide battery. Maybe grafine battery. But untill we find a proper storage even electric cars mean nuthing if u still have to run the power plasnts at night to charge cars and run the grid tied sytem kwh meters forward. Even if everyone went solar where would that power go? Now it goes to your neighbor whos not on solar. Energy storage is key
