By the way once your airship is finalized and its able to be bought how much would they cost? also how much does it cost to maintain the airship? also i had a cool idea, if you made a bigger airship, i wonder if you strap a paint ball gun to the bottom would it work?

Thanks! Well, its hard to say how much it would cost to own/operate. Helium is really expensive, but with something small like this I think Hydrogen would be just fine to use. Hydrogen is dirt cheap, and has other advantages. It leaks more slowly, and lifts more.

Welcome back Bacca! Have you ever seen John Schettler's Kirov alternate history book series? It focuses a lot on airship combat in Season 2 - you should check em out if you haven't already!

@@BaccaYarro Its set in WW2, and one of the key features of airship combat is to have the high ground (badum tsh) since most guns are mounted on the bottom of the balloon and in the gondolas… the gas bags are helium-filled and have a self sealing rubber coat, so machine guns (and even 3 inch guns!) are pretty useless, but big cannons (known as bag busters) can defeat the self sealing mechanism. However, an airship can't go toe to toe with a naval vessel, since the flak guns can rip it apart easily… these are just the basics. Does it sound accurate to real life?

Bacca temperature control is key... hot air expands and cold air contracts. Imagine a hot air balloon if you will as it is easier to fly in the morning due to cold weather. Same thing with a balloon :P

Yup, I agree completely. Much of this design is about temperature control. The envelope is transparent to reduce superheating. The solar cells are not on the envelope to prevent heating from the cells from affecting lifting gas density. The thruster is arranged to direct airflow over the solar cells to cool them. Etc, etc. Heating/cooling is a huge deal with airships. Solar powered ones: doubly so :)

It would need more weatherproofing, but it does have batteries for flying when the sun is not strong enough. One of the main goals with this is to fly overnight, so the batteries are pretty significant.

Wouldn't a transparent envelope also increase the gas temperature making the blimp lighter? Is that increase negligible.

whouldn't any envelop do that anyways cause the sun would hit it regardless? in fact the clear one would have less of a heating effect

So, heating of the envelope, called "superheating" in the airship world, is actually a bad thing most of the time. The reason why is when the sun goes down you lose all that heat. Which means if you were relying on it for lift you may be in trouble. Part of the reason for the transparent envelope is to decrease superheating, so it has the same lift during the day and the night.
