I buit the two tank system one the pre heat For the other i used a water circulation pump And a motorized check valve. It the system was Used in ft laderdale Florida. Built from scratch in my garage I a sliding glass door as my lenz that i got at a good will place for 10$ Drilled holes in the fram Sized my box to fit the door used some old industrial shelves i also bought at the good will Place bolted them togeather and the laced My 1/2 copper tubing On the panels used 1/2coppet pipe straps to Anchor the pipe to the panels painted it crinkle Finish black engine paint Insulated inside of box and ported my in and out lines out the box. This simple systed Worked great for over 15 years with not one failure. Forgt to mention I made my own electrons control with Two thermistors and a op amp turning a relay on an off to run the pump a check valve Was able to acieve 151F Degrees in a 40 gal water tank. Can be done By a handy guy with garage tools mybe 3 to 4 week ends back in 1974 saved 40$ a month 😢

7:23 the main reason why it gets hotter because the glass hinders the warm air to mix with cold air through convection, also glass is a bad thermal conductor so the heat won´t escape the contraption as fast as something more conducting. heat transfers always from hot to cold

Use LOW-E glass and have it face such that it traps the heat instead of reflecting it if you want max heat gain.

Can these solar water heaters use orange pex (designed for approx 220 degrees) spray painted black in a 4' x 8', 2x4 frame with a painted black glass top?
@TurtleWaxed
@TurtleWaxed 3 жыл бұрын
You would want to think about the fact that "plastic" is an insulator so it will not absorb or transfer heat very well but would work ok for the lines. Keep also in mind that PEX is not allowed to directly connect to hot water heaters for a good reason. Heat can make the plex soften and leak at connection points. A last consideration is UV resistance. I would say thin wall copper pipe is far superior.
@TheLanceFrazier

I was looking at the diagram at the 24:00 mark and hypothesized that if you were to use put a thermal mass between the metal plate and the insulation, would that be better than insulation alone? I understand that in the early morning the mass would need to heat up as well-potentially robbing some of the solar energy from the tubing; however, would this benefit late-day/early-evening heating of the tubing as solar energy is decreased?

I would like to build a 2 tank system. My idea is to use a flat plate collectors to 1st storage tank via a small circulating pump. The 2nd storage tank with a top mount heat pump for winter use. I think that in summer I could make enough hot water to last 4 days (family of 4) with both tanks full, in case of bad weather. Anything I'm missing please let me know. (Located on East Coast of Australia)

Let say, I live in the desert or flint Michigan, your AC- unit DRIPS about 10 gallon of water a day or more, You could let the water drip from your kitchen, How hard would it be to refine this water to drink or take a bath. You can take a bath with to buckets. THIS water has no fluoride and GREAT for plants.
@garethbaus5471
@garethbaus5471 3 жыл бұрын
You would want to run it through a particle filter and a UV filter which would usually cost more than the water is worth. Also this usually won't work in the dessert because desert air often has a low humidity meaning there isn't as much water available in the air to condense

it's hard to think about when you have to reduce your ways from turning the tap. check how people get water when there isn't any to be had, instead of asking in essence some of the most basic human questions under a video talking about thermal energy storage. haiti, libya, venezuela, jamaica... and that's barely scratching even the western hemisphere. asking questions is one of the best paths, but educate yourself, in the nicest way possible. waiting to be educated leaves you wondering and wandering. like people that don't know how to clean water.
@brandiminor1632

I won't be circulating antifreeze. It kind of defeats the purpose of the system. I'll just use enough insulation. Perhaps build it around another source of heat. I'd also like to put it in a high spot so it will be gravity run instead of an electric pump.

I've heard of placing large tanks in the ground (backyard or crawlspace) and filling them with used motor oil (likely free from oil change locations). Then run the oil through the solar collector. It can take a while, but eventually that recirculating oil would reach some very high temperatures. Due to they insulation of being in ground and the slow loss of heat from extremely hot oil, the heat captured can last a very long time. Then you simply would have copper or pex plumbing running through the tanks for water to circulate and become heated. I was told it would be more than enough to run steam generators, radiant floor heating, radiant heating under driveways and of course household use. Your thoughts?
@SoLSamuraibloodblade
@SoLSamuraibloodblade 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea. I searched and oils specific heat is about half of water. So the oil would have to be heated to twice that of the water to get the same amount of thermal storage. You would need to double your storage area, or double the temperature. If you get a leak in the system that’s a environmental concern whereas water poses no issues. And then there’s the flammability issue with extremely hot oil.

I live in Florida. What would happen if I use a standard hot water heater. I would pump water from the drain into my solar collector. The return would go into the outlet of the water heater. This would cause the water to circulate through my water heater. Heating my water. The pump would be controlled by a thermostat. When the water is hot it would circulate through the water heater keeping the water hot. The normal heating elements would only turn on at night when the sun went down. I would also have an insulated storage tank that would pump water thru the solar heater when the water heater is at temperature. The second tank would operate as a pre heater for the water heater. My reasoning. Why buy a very high priced water heater that has solar heating coils. Why wouldn’t this work? I already have a high efficiency water heater. Why do I need to isolate the water heater from solar collector?

Hi, I live in the northeast and I’d recommend insulting your hot water pipes (and 10’ of the cold line at the water heater) and installing an Intermatic water heater timer and buy extra triggers. It saved me huge amounts of money. No loss of hot water w/ insulated pipes when the water heater is off from the timer when I’m in bed.

I have to disagree with a vacuum pump and a access to a decent machine shop you could create a reasonable evacuated tube system. I would recommend having an engineer on hand too much alcohol and you could end up with a bomb but it could be done.
@orcoastgreenman
@orcoastgreenman 6 жыл бұрын
tberry7348 - in the manufacturing process I've seen,they don't bother pulling a vacuum making those evacuated tubes...The high heat they are at when the end of the tube is closed by melting the glass together, creates the needed vacuum as the assembly cools.
