My father bought a 1983 Subaru GL wagon in Louisiana, a FWD 1.8l CARBORATED station wagon. That wagon stayed with us for 19 years of his United States Air Force service, getting us through the forests of Germany (where it saw the Berlin Wall fall), dried lake beds of California (where the space shuttle lands), Alps of Italy (and Vince, Rome, and the Almafi Coast), and desert of Texas (where no humans should ever be) before he sold it to a college kid. It had 180k+ miles on the clock, and he claims all he had to do to it was replace the clutch plates twice in that span. Reliable, do all, trustworthy service. He has replaced it with a Dodge Stratus, new off the lot, who's transmission shit the bed within a month of ownership. Since then, he has had 4 Subarus, through Anchorage Alaska, Pennsylvania, and now Ohio. One of those, a 2018 6MT Forester, now sits in my driveway, receiving a fresh wash and wax today, as it turns out. I get 31.5mpg during the summer in a 4WD, trailer-pulling, family mover. Here's to Subaru. 😘🍷

Cheers and thanks for your great tale of Suby love. My experience is with the mid 80's generations. like the 1983s, and I have nothing but respect for the little go-anywhere vehicles, their toughness, and the simple engineering they have. Best wishes to you and yours!

By any standard, this is a very well kept car. In 2013, I used to drive a similar one, a 1985 JDM Subaru Leone.

I picked one of these up, tore the motor down and am doing a head job and all that. Should be a good car for going shooting or snowy days.

MetallChips 85 yes great little all terrain vehicles they are... I have had this wagon in about every off road situation possible from deep snow in the Rockies to tall sand dunes near the Salton Sea. I’m lowering my price to $2250. Thanks for watching and your comment and good luck with your Subaru! The USMB Internet message board has always been there for me through the years when I needed them. Great info and community there! Cheers

Hey thanks very much Alex! These are fairly easy to work on, as many car were engineered in those days, and I always preferred doing what I could myself. We'll see if indeed I sell the old girl or not... Cheers!

Nice video. I have a Subaru GL Station Wagon 1987, greetings from Costa Rica!!!

Hi Steven, thanks. Yes, great versatile cars. My Subaru went pretty much everywhere, highways, deserts, mountains, sand and snow. Because of the difficulty to find replacement parts and the RIDICULOUS smog laws in California I had to sell the wagon. Stay well and take care of your Subaru! Thanks

you actually dont need to really take it out of gear or stop moving to go back and forth between fwd and 4wd hi and low, its 100% on the fly just clutch in and go, like your shifting from 1st to 2nd, or if from fwd to 4wd you can do it while your even under power!

Amazing, I really enjoyed that wagon, took the best care I could, and wasn’t really happy to sell it but California smog laws are absurd. Are you sure you bought my old wagon. What’s the first name of the seller, what state? Cheers and good luck!

Hey Greg, there were a lot of these back in the day. But most haven’t lasted through all these years and the seasons. This car I believe I purchased in 1995 from a used car dealer in a suburb of Denver Colorado. Great vehicle, practical, easy to work on and fun to drive. Thanks for your input!

“The paint show the age of the sun”. ☀️Looks pretty good for being billions and billions of years old! 😅. Not surprising for a subie
@urbantrader23463 жыл бұрын
Good ol Subie she was to me. Had to sell because local California smog laws made it too costly to Kerry the car. Definitely fun little off roadster! Cheers Jose.

@@urbantrader2346 😞. Oh man what a shame with these California laws that affect our older cars! I’m sure it would be very cost prohibitive to bring the old girl up to date if it could be done at all. I’m a sentimental old fool when it comes to old subies (as corny as it sounds, I tend to adopt or rescue them rather than just buying a used car I guess a see them kind of like pets I guess 😅) anyway here in central fl we don’t do inspections like most states and we can apply for antique registration after our cars reach a certain age that would exempt them anyway. I’m sure your subie will find a new life as a classic!😀 Salud Señor Trader!

Although I have tried groomers times on KZbin to get them to locate for me the magnets in the ignition switch for 1 + 3 + 2 + 4 know where is there a description as to where they are located I'm pretty sure this is all that is wrong with my Subaru but it without it I can't start the car it starts but it won't stay running I have a GL Subaru wagon 4 by 4 all wheel drive 5 speed that ran fine until I parked it last winter now it won't stay running it'll start it'll run but it won't idle

Hey Erick, sounds like it might be a vacuum leak. Maybe a rat or mouse ate into a hose or one cracked. I can't be of any more help but wish I could. Three things I highly recommend if you are to keep the Subaru. 1) google search "htkysa amazon book". It stands for a book titled "How To Keep Your Subaru Alive". Great book. 2) Find online and buy the full set of Factory Service Manuals (FSM) for your particular year Subaru. There will be 3-7 original Subaru books for your year. Keep an eye out, they can be found and bought. 3) Think about switching to toggle type switches for everything you can and this may include the ignition, auxiliary, etc. The toggle switch technology is universal while the Subaru parts are harder and harder to find typically. Cheers and good luck with your Subaru.

Almost 75 MPH and the 1985 Subaru Leone does not feel like it is going that fast...Not all cars do that for sure...
@urbantrader23462 жыл бұрын
Great driving (although no cruise is a pain especially with manual transmission) and capable off roads car. Towards the end parts are hard to locate and California smog rules made me sell the wagon. Also, in snowy regions I think they rusted out ultimately. Cheers

What kind of mpg does this get?
@urbantrader23466 жыл бұрын
Hi David, average MPG I have measured is 24-25 on the wagon and the tank holds a little over 15 gallons. Cheers
