For years I’ve struggled with the term “submissive” in schooling a horse. Watching your videos, I realize that “attentive” is probably the more correct. Submission doesn’t necessarily result in responsiveness; but an attentive horse is more likely to be responsive to the rider.

I confess I use the old timers trick of molasses on the bit when starting colts or with horses that don't open mouth. After a few times, they look for the bit lol. Yes, I do fade the molasses out. Another thing I do and I'm sure Tim does is I always check for wolf teeth. Many times that's an issue.

I have seen so many people say that trainers don’t know what they’re doing when they’re told horses have been “broke” and even ridden in auctions (a horse rescue I watch deals a lot with horses like this). Anyone can slap a saddle and bridle on a horse, even a rider, sedate them, and call them broke. There’s so many more aspects to breaking a horse than just having a saddle and bridle on. Great video.

Hi Tim, I very much enjoy watching your horse 🐎 training videos. This one your working here was sold as broke. YAY HORSE PUCKIES!! I have started and seen untouched horses and youngsters that know where thier feet are better than this one. He's all over the place. His jerky speed changes are not very becoming to him. His front feet look a bit mucked up on angles in my eyes. I think you do a bang up job handling the horses. You have to be level headed working with horses and have patience. If they think you’re mad at them they will shut down and get wary around you. Don’t yell, don’t hit them with anything, they’re sensitive and it’s harder to get their forgiveness once you’ve done it. They don’t forget. dont punish and don’t scream at them or cuss at them. It scares them and they don’t like that negative energy being anywhere near them much less having to carry it around on their back. They demand respect and they will definitely let you know when you’re not respecting them
@Goldenhawk583
@Goldenhawk583 Жыл бұрын
While I gree with just about everything you say, horses are not stupid, and they are experts at reading body language. If a horse charges you, and you give it a good smack to back it off ( and save your own life), the horse will not think you were mean, it will not become afraid of the whip, and it doesnt worsen the relationship. A charging horse has no respect for you, and may be intending to kill you, certainly maim and scare you. If 2 horses fight, they both get whacked, but they understand the reason, and dont hild it against the other horse, Same for humans, if the horse chages and get whacked, it knows very well, it is because it charged.. and that charging didnt pay off. Most times, actually hitting a horse is a no no, but there are times when it is the only way to save yourself, and it is not unfair to the horse.. they get it.
@hamwallet8446
@hamwallet8446 Жыл бұрын
@@Goldenhawk583 you’ve got a point there. I guess what I mean is don’t hit a horse that’s been abused by someone else. But sometimes they just don’t care and pisses them off even more I mean I’ve seen a 70 year old punch a pony in the jaw 6 times for biting the shit out of him for trying to put a bit in its mouth tacking them up to pull a little chuck wagon. They were little sale barn special ponies. Mean as shit. They did that to him a lot. I’ll be honest, it was really hard not to laugh. That pony bit him hard af and held on for a second I could see his skin between its teeth. I don’t know what was funnier the pony biting him or the noise he made before he started swinging😂😂😂
@Goldenhawk583
@Goldenhawk583 Жыл бұрын
@@hamwallet8446 well, that would be an abusive situation.. the pony I mean. Not sure I would laugh at that, more so since the pony clearly had no intent to kill, or the guy would be dead. And ofc you dont just smack any animal, if it has been abused or not. IF physical retaliation is needed, the situation is allready very dangerous. Plenty of dog and horse trainers who hardly ever use force, as they prefer cooperation. Make the horse think its his idea to trailer load for instance, as that way, he doesnt have to walk and walk in circles, but can relax on the trailer. Getting angry at anyone rarely helps, even with humans, keeping your cool helps more...even with humans. Patience, and baing able to communicate what you want, to an animal by showing, rather than forcing, can gain huge changes in very little time.
@hamwallet8446
@hamwallet8446 Жыл бұрын
@@Goldenhawk583 very true. I don’t condone abuse or mean to make light of it I just thought it was kinda funny seeing him get bit because he deserved it. however I love horses more than any other creature on this earth. I have since I was a boy about the only thing I’m good at is working with them and understand them on their level and show them a new way of thinking that goes beyond what they already know. They’re like kids you have to teach them manners and some of them legit have mental issues like people and in some cases they really can’t help the way they are and become truly dangerous. In those cases there’s really not much you can do for them except release them. I would never put a horse like that through a sale to hurt or kill someone that doesn’t know it has mental issues and certainly not send it to a slaughter house. It’s best to do a thorough inspection of the animal before you buy it. Because that’s how people get rid of problem horses. You should never buy a horse sight unseen. You have to meet it and see what kind of temperament it has and know what you’re getting into before you commit to buying it. Because if not you can end up with a monster of a horse and be stuck with it

Most of the horses I get for training are shipped in from at least a couple hours away and most have health certificates due to traveling in from out of state. The major advantage to that is usually the owners who send their horses to me have invested a good amount of expense in getting the horse to me, so they are usually well taken care of. The owners that would not pay to take care of their horses will not spend the money I charge for training. About the only things I can do immediately is look over their body for snotty noses, cuts, and lame walking. I do have 1 stall separated from the rest and that is where I put new horses for a couple days. If I do notice something I notify the owner immediately.

When I was a kid we had one crazy horse after another. Our second Shetland had no respect for us at all. I had no one who knew horses like him to help us understand how to correct him. He bit us, reared, bucked, kicked. We kept asking for a saddle but our father and grandfather said we had to learn to ride him first. Finally, they got comfortable with our skills and bought a saddle. The first day he reared over backwards trying to destroy the saddle since he knew we could control him with a saddle. I got off in time but he broke the tree in the saddle. Dang him. One day I went out to get the cows home to milk. He decided that was the day he was going to back up. There was nothing I could do to make him stop. He just backed up. Dad was watching from the barn door, laughing. I started watching behind me since the edge of the gravel pit was getting closer. Closer, closer, closer. Then over edge he went. I jumped off landing on the floor but Buster had his front feet hanging over the edge with his back feet on the floor. We stood there for awhile contemplating the situation. Finally I gave him a jerk and he went over backwards. I jumped on the second he was on his feet then made him race around the edge to get to Dad since he'd been watching us go over the edge. He was running toward us when we got there. He was really scared wed gotten hurt. The idiot never stuck himself in reverse again. Another time we'd been riding and stopped at a hay rack parked in front of the barn. Buster began to eat the hay dust. We wanted to ride so we began to pull on the lines, Buster kept eating. I started jerking. That was when he went KUJO! on us and began shrieking at us and began to chase us with his lips peeled back and his mouth open and his teeth sticking out. Since I was first in line I made a couple turns around the wagon and into the barn to get Dad. My sister being second ducked under the wagon. My poor brother was so close to getting bitten he couldn't get away. When my Dad came out the door Andy had jumped the wagon hitch which was still attached to the wagon, then made the corner heading into the length of the wagon. Dad grabbed the horse's lines on the way by and gave the horse a whipping, tuned him up pretty good. He was pretty good with for a week after that then became his usual self......I thank heaven we had that horse since he taught me to respect animals, to learn to ride bareback and be perfectly happy bareback. To understand his moods and to be able to be about a quarter step ahead of him some of the time. One day my sister and I were arguing and pushing at each other over his back fighting over whose turn it was to ride him. Buster got tired of it and stomped my foot then stomped my sister's. Dad looked up and saw us, a kid on each side of him, sitting down holding a foot as we cried. Dad laughed

Preferably none. If you can't ride without a bit....don't ride.

Oh Please!!! I'll be you ride in a Parelli halter, and the horse is totally upside down. So horrible for their backs and hocks. A well balanced, properly trained equestrian can send the most subtle, gentle cues to even the most sensitive horse mouths, and there is absolutely no pain. Happy, foamy mouths. Three piece snaffle bits. No long shank western "hall of shame" bits.

Sounds like a stock pony. Catchem every morning then rebreak em every day until the drive is done then let em loose until next year.

I have never understood the fascination with crossties. Every horse I have ever had would stand to be groomed or saddled or whatever with just a lead rope draped over my arm at most or left on the ground. They did not fret or fuss or evade. They would stand tied to a trailer or a strong fence or a tree. Cross ties made them very uncomfortable, and their claustrophobia would kick right in. Why? it just is not necessary?

It is no fun to be a small person and have a big horse squish you into the wall. They are a wee bit bigger than people. If something triggers even a well trained horse you will be glad for the safety. Cross ties are a safety thing, they cause no pain, and are convenient.

I'm not the only one saying you should loose weight! Your job would be so much easier and SAFER if you were 50 lbs lighter. The horse thinks so too. Inconvenient truth told, you are an excellent, humane trainer!😍
