Exceptional Plant/Tree species list of over 70 species. Including a newly described plant occurring knowingly, only on this game farm and around the Rankins Pass area.
This Game Farm lies draped over a valley and the surrounding plateau. The fairly wide range of habitats located on the property offers a tantalizing list of 150 + species.
At the bottom of the valley and in the incised kloofs where spring water emerges is a flood plain with rank grasses and ferns. This plays host to Red-collared Widowbird, Cape Grassbird, Common Waxbill, Levaillant's Cisticola and a variety of breeding weavers.
The rest of the valley floor is made of moister broadleaved woodland interspersed with patches of grass and holds a large variety of species such as Little Bee-eater, Yellow-bellied Greenbul, Lesser and Greater Honeyguides, White-crested Helmet-shrike, Brown-backed Honeybird, Southern Black Flycatcher, Bar-throated Apalis, Southern Black Tit and Common Scimitarbill among many others.
From the valley floor emerges well-wooded, steep rocky slopes of granite and quartzite ridges. Lazy Cisticola, Striped Pipit, Red-winged Starling and Mocking Cliff Chat make this their home. At night, the characteristic calls of Freckled Nightjar and Pearl-spotted Owlet emanate from these areas.
Once over the top of the mountain sides, the habitat changes to sparsely wooded grassland where one may find Coqui Francolin, Fawn-coloured Lark, Southern Fiscal, African Stone Chat, Cape Longclaw, Banded Martin and a variety of pipits.
In summer the air above the valley is abuzz with bee-eaters, swifts, swallows and martins and the breezes generated by the topography are exploited by many raptors. African Harrier Hawk and Verreaux’s Eagle are resident and other raptors which may be spotted include Brown and Black-chested Snake-Eagles, Amur and Lanner Falcons, African Hawk Eagle, Eurasian Hobby, Vultures and European Honey Buzzard. The majestic call of the African Fish Eagle sometimes rings out along the valley as well.
This Game Farm holds a high concentration of Shelley’s Francolin and with some patience and perseverance, offers birders a good chance of connecting with this special, sometimes tricky species.
