Solder on Aluminum

Solder on aluminum - Solder electronic components & wires to aluminum surfaces. No need for screws/bolts. Useful for example for aluminum RF shields and heat sinks. Also suitable for plating aluminum objects for artistic purposes.
Process is electroless (non-galvanic copper plating) and uses very common easy to find chemicals.

I did this on some machined 6061 and then did an electroless tin plate over the copper. It worked pretty well. The places that it didn't plate as well were places that were harder to mechanically clean (i.e. sand) beforehand. If I could, I'd sandblast and or acid etch prior. Also, I wear gloves and wash up well when using copper sulphate and ferric chloride.

I believe you can use Vegetable oil. You'll need to see what solder works best with it. If this works for you. Just look how much you save in time and money.

I imagine this would also work with aluminum chloride instead of ferric chloride, which is good since aluminum chloride is somewhat less toxic and reactive. It may also help to add corrosion inhibitors

The choice in the Aluminum alloy is very important. almost pure 1xxx like 1100 is OK, 2xxx like 2011 contains copper, lead and bismuth 2024 contains copper, manganese and magnesium can you solder these? Can you solder 3xxx like 3003 which contains Manganese and copper. 5xxx like 5052 Manganese and chrome 5083, 5086 manganese, magnesium and chrome. can your solder these? 6061 magnesium, silicon, chrome, and copper and 6063 magnesium and silicon I had 6061 T6 part first plated with copper and then silver to make bus bars for a power electronic compression bonded Darlington twin stack switching 1000 amperes. Marginal attachment. I was told because of silicon. can you solder 6063? NOTE: metals are listed in Mc Masters Carr.

This didn't work very well in my case. I suppose it's easier when you're soldering a tiny little thing where the heat has nowhere to go, but when working with a larger aluminum piece, it's hard to get it to be warm enough. That's why I was hoping that chemistry could work... but the copper doesn't stick very well.

I tried it first without and that also worked. But with the addition of Ferric Chloride initial reaction takes place fast and more strong.

Hi, to everyone wondering if this will work on aluminum heatsinks, yes it works very well. I was able to manage to copper-plate a regular 100mmx40mm aluminum heatsink using this method, and solder on a heatpipe into it. But the process is not that easy. You have to be very patient in applying, and you should only apply a thin film of copper sulphate and ferric chloride solution on top of the other until you have a noticeable and thicker plating. Don't apply too much in one wipe or else, it will only have a black goo and no plating. The copper plating I managed to do can hold up to a bit of force if it's thick enough, and it also works as far as cooling is concerned. A very thin layer will just get chipped off like paint.e
