It doesn’t have a battery because it died many years ago the charging brick cable is all frayed up but still works. Many connection slows are all lose but still works. And no hinge problems. This is back in the day when processors were just single core. That’s how old this laptop is. Here is the thing. I took it out the other day. Turned it on and the ancient laptop came to life and loaded up windows XP. Took a long time but with the specs you can’t complain the elderly laptop was giving it all it’s got. I’m holding on to this treasure for dear life. So one day before it’s my time to leave I can show the world what a real laptop used to be like. Never giving up this laptop. Technically IBM has been already outsourcing the Thinkpad productions for years before they sold to Lenovo. Which also saw the entire staff, engineers and executives, working for Lenovo. iirc to is that management for the Thinkpad and IBM's laptop division would as part of the deal end up taking over management at lenovo. Using usb c seems like a good choice to me in general, more universal which is good since the powerbricks tend to never last as long as the laptop or if you simply forget it at home. It also provides more functionality, which is nice since laptops never seem to have enough usb ports. With that said it would certainly be much better if it was on a modular daughter board. USB c is typically durable but it's still likely to be the highest wear and tear part on the entire laptop. Sure, a usb c port isn't particularly difficult to replace even with just basic soldering equipment but it sure would be better if it was serviceable by any unskilled user.

Unless you’re talking about the fact that they tend to easily die. Then I get it. Plus, as side note, a standard like USB Type C for charging is a godsend. I don’t have data but I bet it’s way more common the charger going bad than all the USB Type C charging ports.

"But if you can fix it with a soldering iron" see the thing is, regular consumers don't have the skill to do this. They DO have the skill to use a philips screwdriver and watch a KZbin tutorial. Also, the Fortune 500 companies that are buying these by the thousands, don't pay their IT team to solder due to the amount of time involved. They DO pay them to replace a modular charging port that takes 10 minutes. I do agree 100000% that having a universal charger is amazing. I just really wish USB-C wasn't so shitty when it came to durability. I hate saying it but the lightning connector was, physically, a far superior design.

Hi, unpopular opinion and probably due to my small experience with Lenovos in particular, but the only time I had to fix the Lenovo charging ports was the old square ones. I could however fix them literally with some hot glue and plastic bits. I have one of the newer ThinkPad X1 Yogas because I needed a 2 in 1 for studies abroad, and I can feel the ports getting wobbly... and I knew full well what I was signing into (I always check the serviceability before purchase), it's just that there was no real alternative. Anyway, the ultimate gigabased charging port of all time is just a round DC jack. I have a 13-year old Nokia with it's original out-of-the-box charger, and only now the charger cable is starting to fail... The only real problem is it's not as interchangeable with USB-C, so there's more of a risk of running out of supply. Also, USB-Cs are obligatory these days because of European Union legislation. And I think it is pretty beneficial especially in the smartphone world, because - who had to deal with the fucking microUSB port for charging, knows my pain.

@Epoch6156 ай бұрын
Not the chips, the port itself yes. With the amount of power going through it all it takes is the port being stretched, a weak connection forming, or a bad cable and you get higher resistance and that makes a ton of heat. But it's not really a USB C problem, even Nvidia GPUs were burning up and melting because of the same reason. It's also what causes home electrical fires and is why you should replace loose or wobbly plug receptacles as soon as possible.

i would like to ask to, the greatest technician that ever lived, if the X280 is also in the "shit thinkpad" category.

just because it can be resoldered doesn't excuse the poor design, nobody if they knew that resoldering damages a board would ever say that. heat damages the silica, after a few port swaps or even just one you cant repair it again.

I think this is somewhat of a bad take. We are all using USB-C for basically anything electronic. You can't really blame a port which is a massive win for convenience because of bad implementations from manifacturers. It's a shit design when the charging port is directly connected to the motherboard instead of having its own little sub-PCB or such. Dunno, there could be many other ways to design a charging port without having a tendency to fry the connector. It's not USB-C's fault.

Shame about the terrible design. If you have to use one of these laptops, you could get magnetic USB-C adapters with fast charge support. Of course, that won't help you if your port is damaged already

Soldering is no big deal for a good technician. My cousin does it all the time! Because he is the greatest technician that ever lived!
