Concise and straight to the point. I have an interview tomorrow for a QA position and this will surely help.

@@SolderingGeekThank you. It went extremely well and I’m going back this morning for a second round which will focus more on technical questions.

The J-STD-001 1.7 says if the J-STD-001 is sited in a contract, the 610 does not apply unless separately or specifically required...why would this be the case if the 610 is a companion document to the J-STD-001...or given your explanation of each documents purposes?

Hi, Thanks for your question. The J-001 and the 610 are companion documents in that they both relate to the assembly and manufacture of electronic assemblies. The J-001 applies to the assembly process, i.e. what should each step of the process be able to achieve and what should the product look like after each step is complete. It answers the questions of, "How should the process be controlled to make a good device?" The assembly is evaluated at each step to ensure that the process is correct. The 610 is only the visual appearance of the finished assembly. That is, after the device has been through all of the assembly steps, heat cycles, rework or repair, etc. The criteria in the documents general match, but the 610 may have slightly different (sometimes less strict) criteria compared to the 610. The 610 takes into account that there may be slight degradation of the assembly by the time it's been through multiple assembly steps. If both are sited in the contract, then the customer (designer) has the responsibility to define what document take precedence when there is a difference of criteria between the documents. For future reference The intro music needs to be much lower or your mic needs to be much louder. I was barely able to hear your voice after the intro was clear as day. Great video though.

I heard his voice loud and clear. It could be cross leveling on your device.

It is difficult to define hand soldering processes as they differ between assemblies (referencing the J-Std.) Machine soldering, either by wave or reflow oven is easy to define (and critique the quality of). Rework and new assemblies which have to be hand soldered is a different animal where stresses and thermal shock, etc. come into play if high integrity is to be retained. Intermetallic embrittlement and other fault elements have to be kept in check. To me (and much of the military) RoHS was a costly change and was not needed. Metallic form Lead is not the danger. Scientists spent decades perfecting the Sn63-Pb37 solder alloy. Government contractors are not obligated to follow RoHS in some instances, it depends on what is being manufactured.
