I cannot understate how much I love the Ganondorf is both a spirit and the King because it works so well.

Ganondorf is honestly the most tragic character in the LoZ. He never got the chance to be good, and he tried so hard. You know: the King in OoT only won the Hylian Civil war because of Ganondorf’s army? The Goron forces, the Zora control over the water supply, and the Gerudo Army. And even then it was close. But notice how the three spiritual stones went to only two of those three aids. In fact, it was *that* very pointless conflict that drove Ganondorf to decide he should conquer the nation and more equally distribute the rights and fertile land of Hyrule to his people who had to live in the barren desert. He was a good king with a bad lot in life, who Demise took for his own and corrupted without even a chance to fight back. Honestly, the one time Ganondorf actually frees himself from Demise’s curse (Wind Waker): he’s actually really sad. He’s so bitter with his home lost and gone, and just wants it back. He doesn’t underestimate any threats anymore, even kids (already got him once), and he’s actually rather even-handed with his evil. He’s just a man who was broken who wants to go home.

It’s even more of a tragedy when you realize WHY Demise chose to be reincarnated as a desert king. It’s because he is a direct descendent of one of the three responsible for his original death. Gannondorf is the descendent of Groose. He even admits to link and Zelda in skyward sword that he was going to go off and found his own kingdom. He even contemplates it being a kingdom of warrior women the Groodo.

He's not free from Demise's curse, he may have been broken, but he's evil, he allowed it, he's himself, and the essence of Demise, his soul is in him, he would not exist then if there weren't any Demise or Demise's curse, and being evil was his choice, he decided it, being broken doesn't justify your evil actions, there are many broken people and one isn't evil because of that, I'm broken and I still have very strong values and morals and I would never go against them and I would fight for them and I still retain my empathy and compassion, even though others have hurt me a lot, in Wind Waker he never freed himself from Demise's curse, he's always been himself
