Ernest Hemingway tells the story of Harold Krebs, a young man who returns home to Oklahoma after fighting in World War I. Krebs struggles to adjust to the mundane reality of his small-town life, finding himself alienated and disconnected from family and friends. He feels unable to talk about his war experiences, as the town's romanticized view of war clashes with his own traumatic memories. Krebs' desire for a simple, unentangled life conflicts with societal expectations, particularly in matters of work and relationships. Ultimately, he decides to leave his home, seeking a place where he can live without pressure or judgment.
