How friggin' great was popular music in '81?! When they go into the "great albums of 1981" ... I mean, wow. Its mind blowing how good the music was then. People usually clump the whole 80's as being a great decade in music but I think that music was great in the EARLY 80's and then something started going astray around '84, '85 and the rest of the decade wasn't that great to me. And I was there! Thanks for sharing these, I'd LOVE a few of these on DVDR!

Fantastic quality - both the music and the video. As others have said, I would KILL to have this whole episode (and more) on DVDR. Makes me wish Netflix or Hulu would get the rights to stream the old shows.

Man what memories! This was good music from a period of time I remember to be one of THE best times of my life. The 80's were a lot of different things to people but for me it was the greatest and the music was just phenomenal. If there was a period of time I could ever go back to live over again this would be it :)

I was 13, but this was a very HAPPY time period for music. I get chills every time I hear music from this time period. That's why I primarily listen to music from the 70's, 80's and 90's. No matter what type of mood I'm in, every time I hear this music it cheers me up!

I agree with you. I think the early 80's were the best times for music, then it seemed to change after the mid 80's. I love the early stuff, then the music that came later was different. Solid Gold changed a lot during this time too. I loved the first 3 seasons, then in season 4 it started to change and by season 5 I lost all interest and stopped watching. The new dancers and new stage didn't cut it for me anymore. The early stuff is classic, like the music. I'd love this on dvd too!

I think it became an issue of saturation. My aunt, who graduated hs in 1973 told me that when she was in high school, if the Stones or the Doors were on Ed Sullivan it was a huge deal. That was the talk of school. Of course, with video, it was new for a while, but by the late 80s I think it was just old hat.....

The irony in that is that in New York, "Solid Gold" aired on WPIX Channel 11 - which, since the mid-1980's, has been a sister station to KTLA.

@wendileona My sentiments exactly. I wonder if MTV had something to do with the music tanking a bit because in the latter half of the 80s, too much of it was being produced and it was becoming a caricature of itself in many instances.

That's a really good point. A lot of bands and acts who were huge in both the seventies and eighties---their 70s and early 80s hits are more well remembered today, than their mid 80s stuff. Look at Heart....people like Barracuda, not really These Dreams. Journey, same thing...peple remember Open Arms and Don't Stop...not so much The Girl Can't Help It. Or REO....people remember Keep on Loving You, etc, and not so much I Can't Fight This Feeling...just my observations...
