Yes indeed. Solid state technology is here and this company is legit. I just installed two 48volt 210Ah solid state battery’s of theirs weighing only 90lbs each. Today my son and I fished nearly 30 miles along the Chesapeake Bay on battery power alone.

@@KayakDIYyes. I got both batteries from solid state marine. I never opened them up to see if there is any special magic in there. The batteries just work and weigh less than what I would expect LiPoFe to be. I briefly covered the topic in the “electrified classic” KZbin video

I’m confused, I don’t think solid state batteries are LiFePO4…right? No dendrites so no fire risk, so you want the maximum energy density.
@EVoffroad3 ай бұрын
@@wj9494sorry my comment was confusing. I meant to say that the solid state batteries weigh less than what a comparable LiPoFe would be. There is a lot of contradictory information out there on exactly what the chemistry is (eg how much solid compared to some binding liquids still present). Even 100% solid material can burn just less easily. But regardless of what chemistry is actually inside let me give you real world information. My 48v 210ah “solid state” battery weighs just about 100lbs. I have a LiTime LiPoFe that weighs the equivalent of 202 lbs and a Die Hard Lead acid AGM that weighs the equivalent of about 410 lbs. again I can not speak to what is actually inside the “solid state” cells but they do appear to pack a lot more energy density. I will shoot a video in the topic this weekend.

When most companies go to trade shows, or consumer events like the one you were at, they don't like to have to carry to much stuff in or out. It's very understandable for them to have just the shells of those two batteries on display instead of carrying the full weight production units in and out (or paying lots of money to have everything moved in and out).
@KayakDIY3 ай бұрын
Yes I will agree with that statement. I’ve had big kayak booths leave me with EVERYTHING including bar stools and lighting. They just want to hop on a plane and write off the expense. However, when you are selling a battery it would make sense to have one usable one in the booth.

Solids state batteries are what is necessary for mass adoption of electric drive cars, boats, ect. Power density and fire resistant.
@KayakDIY3 ай бұрын
@@timlammers5666 totally. If we can get 2x-5x density from solid state then Teslas and electric boats I think could truly take off. Plus they become way safer with less thermal runaway, etc.

@@KayakDIYme again. Yes this is a big deal. They are here. They work. Why are they not in cars yet, cost. I have a Hyundai Ioniq 5 that gets 240 mile range on the highway. Solid state batteries are already in phones, in golf carts and small boats like mine. My Hyundai would get 480 miles range with solid state. But if I paid the same price for solid state batteries as I did for my small boat my car they would cost about $40,000. That’s really the secret “catch” you are looking for. But for a smaller vessel or modest sized outboard, totally worth it. I plan to shoot a video on the topic asap.

This new technology is the real deal. I’ve been running Solid States in my 27 Onslow Bay since mid 2023. This will be my second full season with them. I replaced my 3 group 31s with 3 group 27s. Along with a weight reduction of close to 50% each battery boast’s nearly double the amp hours of its closet competitor. The boat is powered with twin mercury v8 300s with a full Garmin electronics package as well as radar, all our pumps, vhf radios and the fusion stereo. These batteries are the only ones on the market that I know of that come with an “on/off” button on the top. Solid State batteries can be programmed for “sleep mode”. A revolutionary fail safe for added security that will remotely turn the batteries off after sitting idol for 24 hours. If anyone doubts this technology, rest assured. Solid State is standing by offering an 8 year full replacement warranty. More than double the warranty of the nearest competitor. Jump on board with us and most of the charter captains here in the Northeast and give them a try. You’ll be just as impressed as we were

LFP is the "safe" lithium chemistry. It is known that non-solid state higher performance is possible with non-LFP, but they are less stable and go try getting that insured. They didn't say whether their formulation is approved by insurance companies for use in boats.

I can’t speak to the chemistry but the two batteries I have are approx half the weight of my LiPoFes and about four times less what lead acid would be. I took a chance as an early adopter and will never go back.
@eagleray13 ай бұрын
It looks like the same chemistry as the DeWalt FlexVolt packs. It's lithium polymer cells, but with hardened cases rather than flexible pouches. Lithium polymer has been more than 2X the energy density of LiFePO4 for decades, but they're unstable (prone to large fires in failure). DeWalt is confident enough in the latest casing to sell them for power tool use, but a few KZbinrs have failure-tested cells labelled "solid state" with VERY flammable results. The rule of thumb is... if it's more energy dense, it's probably that much more flammable too. "Solid state" apprears to be 2020s marketing jargon for "lithium polymer in a harder case." As long as they still create giant flames in failure, I would personally never use them on a boat.

Yeah I remember early drones of mine. I had a 3DR solo drone go in the water and battery got wet. After removing from water it immediately burst into flames. However my LiFePo4 trolling motor batteries have been awesome and they get soaked a lot on my kayaks and skiffs.

What do you think about sodium ion batteries instead of lithium iron phosphate

Problem is Sodium ion has poor density which means much larger physical battery size to get same range as LiFePO4.

Just like nuclear diamond battery tech, been around since 74 but not quite safe for human use. They tried to go in cell phones but , what cell phone Co wants a battery to last for life?? No money there. This tech is not quite what there claiming. But its odd, I wonder who is actually behind this co. The first actuall solid state battery was unveiled few weeks ago. @@MrBumbles2I’m not sure where all this is coming from. Solid state batteries are available on Amazon and have been for a while. This is just one of the first in the us that are going after marine use. Early solid state batteries were in prototype buses in 2015. Solid state is only just now coming on line at a more consumer friendly price point. As I said above, I’m not a chemist. If the batteries are actually nuclear fusion and not just a more solid metal lithium as the company claims, I don’t care. The price point was good, the weight and energy density are phenomenal and my son and I have been fishing all summer with them. I don’t care to open the batteries up to see if there really is gerbil turning a wheel inside there. They just work. I have used lithium ion in model airplanes since 2006 and it works ok too. Solid state just seems better.

@@KayakDIYthis is partly true. Yes the solid state is half the weight of regular lithium ion found in cars. But they still take up some space so doubling range would require about doubling battery room. They are also a bit more expensive on average compared to say LiPOFe. A Tesla would increase in price by $20k with solid state or thereabouts right now. Lastly the Tesla s long range claims 400 miles. If solid state doubled this range to 800 miles that’s still not 1000 miles but getting closer. Finally, EVs usually get 2/3 range of what the manufacturer claims or thereabouts from my experience. So given the space limitations, extra cost and realistic highway range, a Tesla model Y with say 275 mile range (340 claimed) might get 500 miles or so. When solid state prices come down even further you will start seeing them in cars and likely planes more.

Nonsense. Out of the two competitors I considered Dakota Lithium is actually about the same price of the 48v 210aH solid state batteries I bought (currently $5400 vs $5900). LiTime off Amazon cost $2600 for two 100aH 48v batteries which is half the cost of solid state marine not 5x times. Further both the competitors use LiPoFe which is much heavier than solid state and won’t survive as many charge cycles. No brainer for my specific application.

@@payme0there is no doubt that LiPoFe is a bit less expensive especially if you get an affordable Chinese brand off Amazon (about half the cost of the solid state batteries). I have used and love a few of my LiTime LiPoFe batteries for example. But for a small boat or even some aircraft, the weight difference is paramount. If you add the fact that the solid state battery has twice the life cycle of LiPoFe it really makes sense for some applications and the cost over time is comparable.
