I was 8 years old (post 9/11) I was nearly stripped searched at the airport bc my dad lent me his hunting bag as my luggage. (Apparently covered in gunpowder) They never told me why I had to go, so im sent to the secret room, they refuse to let my dad accompany me. I’m in the secret room alone, confused, crying, about to pull my pants down. And the head security lady and my dad barge in and she says “What the F is going on in here?!!” One of the weirdest moments in my life. 9/11 changed this country. I was in that situation with my dad some years ago for what seemed like 3 hours. My uncle and aunt were waiting for us outside too. After a while the guy's boss was like "let them go, you got nothing" but he kept on digging for stuff on his computer. They let us in eventually, but our flight tickets to and from another city inside the US were marked with SSSS and we were always "randomly" selected for the longer/slower line with the fancy body scanning machines, while our relatives weren't.

its wild trying to get into america even when youre a citizen here. i've driven to canada several times before and its crazy cause the canadian side is always just a couple of guys in a tiny building that glance at your passport and just sort of wave you in, but the american side is this huge building with multiple security gates with armed guards that drill you with questions for like 10 mins. some advice my friends who are well traveled gave me is that you should never crack jokes or act overly friendly with them, they'll read too far into everything. just hand them your stuff and tell them where you're going, what you're doing, and how long you're staying. give short concise answers and leave the talking to just one person if you're in a group together

That hasn't been my experience, at least so far. I'm a U.S. citizen and have driven to Canada and back 6 times, most recently two days ago. Every time, both sides just ask "How long is your trip? Are you bringing anything new in that will stay here?" and that's it. Then again, that could be because I've only taken short trips with minimal luggage? Maybe I've just been lucky... I did see someone ahead of me in line get stuff confiscated from their car by U.S. Customs.

Being from Canada, I have been to the US a lot. One of my first trips on my own I went over the border by greyhound bus (cheers for being poor and in college... not omg bus was terrible). We stop at the Windsor crossing which puts you just outside of the US, get out unload everything and have to go into customs. I wait in the long line, and am watching people left and right being denied entry for a variety of reason, finally it's my turn, I step up and the customs agent asks me why I'm going to school for Early Childhood Education and could I confirm my school (this freaked me out, why did they know and why did they care?) Then they wanted to know where I was going, where I was staying and how I had any acquaintances in the US. This is where it gets embarrassing see when I was in college, I was a big Harry Potter geek and had been on an online role playing game for years with people, had video chatted, we'd exchange birthday gifts, whatever... now imagine telling the customs and border guy this at like 2am, and hoping to god the let you into the country. Well lucky for me I brought a ton of documents and contact info should something like this happen, unlucky for me when they did the bag search before we could reboard the bus, my bag flipped over onto the ground sending all my stuff everywhere and I am not quite sure I really got over the border agents helping me repack my underwear... *sigh* I have travelled a lot since then to the US, and can say Jimmy some of the experiences made me want to not go back, so I totally understand your story, but don't let that experience stop you because you were epic on the stream, and you even had doc consider you and Martyn honorary Hermits which says a lot!

M- What do you mean gone? G- They took him Martyn! M- "They" took him!? What do you mean "They" took him? G- I dont know, they just took him and now he's gone. M- So he's with.... Them G- Im afraid so ** Both in disbelief, just looking down and around at all Jimmy's things and slowly start gathering it up ** **Martyn with a small exhale, followed by a soft chuckle, and a smirkish grin asks Grian** M-You got a chest on you?

I mean we're America. Home of we pretend we are free and scared of everything. 45 minutes beats the hell out of the years we've been known to hold some people here. We like to hold people under fake names in high security places. Not even letting their own lawyers or family know where they are. Mind you these are people who are held in the actual US. Not "overseas" in GITMO. And fun fact. We do that to Americans too. I think it was last year a guy made the news because he had hit his tenth anniversary of being held without trial. Imagine spending ten years being held without trial? "Right" to a speedy trial. 😂 But hey we have "rights". The right to have everything taken from you and have a judge make excuses for why your "rights" just don't count. 😢

I used to fly a lot and there are a lot of things TSA look for, the main ones are. #1. attitude and how one carries themselves (too low-key or too friendly) #2. little or no baggage #3. flying alone #4. one-way trips #5. international origin Tick more than one of the above boxes and you become a 'person of interest'. I'm sorry you got tapped but glad that they are doing their jobs.

@@andrew3139That depends heavily on their race. Arabs will be questioned far more intensively than other races at airports, especially in America, because the reason that the TSA both exists and is so strict is because 9/11, and America seems to often conflate ISIS and Al-Queda with all Arabs despite the fact that many aren’t even Muslim, let alone Islamic extremists.

I'm so sorry this was part of your first visit here. The TSA is bad enough as a citizen traveling domestically. I have a very common name that is frequently used as an alias for Bad Men®, so I always got pulled aside for "random additional screenings" (not as scary as what you went through, just annoying). The last time it happened, when it was me, in a walker, with two 80 year old women (one of whom did not seem to know where she was), I finally caved and paid the Transportation Security Agency money to "pre-approve" me to get me off the "random screening" list. When that didn't work, I had to get a redress number, which involved filling out a form and getting a litter indicating my "file at the State Department" had been updated. What. I'm assuming they wanted you to bring more stuff because some criminals, historically, have traveled into the US carrying very little and then done crime. Not an excuse and not a real reason to suspect someone of wrongdoing, but a lot of what the TSA does is security theater. :( Thanks for bearing with it and making it to the event. It wouldn't have been the same without you. I'm glad you got to experience the eclipse and other things afterwards, as well. :)

I was also pulled aside and questioned but I had a much more pleasant experience. It was one guy and he asked a bunch of questions but he was friendly. He also went through my suitcase and I warned him saying it was very full. He was like: nah I‘ve seen worse. But when he was done he actually got flustered because he couldn‘t close my suitcase anymore and i had to do it myself. 😂 He also called my friend who I was staying with and asked her my name and some other information. It was nerve wrecking but I think he wasn’t suspicious of me because I stayed cool the whole time.

Sorry you had to go through that Jimmy, it's scary enough even when the border control turns out to be friendly. Don't let it put you off though! When I went through the border patrol for Finland, I had to explain to them that I was going to a Rubik's cube competition, something that is not always easy to describe to a person, but they took it well and even ended up wishing me good luck! So even though you had a scary experience this time, there are still many good experiences to have! Travel always has its ups and downs, and remember that if you can make it through US customs grilling you, then you can make it through anything :) Quite honestly well done Jim for making it through that without cracking or panicking, genuinely impressive.

Dang! That customs officer should really think before speaking. At face value the first one sounds racist and the second one is just confusing. Saying something like, "We don't get many YooToobers through here," and "you seemed under packed, a lot of people who try to immigrate illegally underpack." Would have made rhings much clearer. But those are only answers I've surmised by reading through the comments. Heaven knows what he was actually talking about.

It's a terrible experience that even US citizens face when they go through customs too.
